Think I'm over loafers (for now), are mary jane ballerinas here to stay?

I've loved loafers for a long time, it's a style I'll always go back to, but I'm loving the ballerinas being back more than I imagined. Got a leopard mary jane pair from office with a softly squared toe (which makes them differ from last time round imho) and considering getting another couple of pairs in black and maybe another colour, burgundy? They are inexpensive and comfortable as far as these type of shoes go. I reckon they'll look good for another couple of years, what do you think?
I'm trying to pare my wardrobe back down to simpler styles without much fuss as i think it suits me better, ballerinas seem to fit the bill. I tend to prefer the mary jane ones so my toes aren't cramping up trying to keep them on.

I've always stuck to ballet flats and dolly shoes/Mary Jane's. I love Hot Chocolate Design shoes especially, they are by far the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn. Love them for work!

Parratha · 29/01/2025 14:12

That sole looks so thin. Won't last long and doubt it will be very comfortable (or warm when the weather is bad).

henlake7 · 29/01/2025 14:48

I think mary janes, ballerinas and loafers are all here to stay. Wear whatever you like!
Personally I think I prefer loafers because its easier to wear socks with them and unless its 30C outside then Im gonna wear socks!

That is one of the things I love about the younger generations....they dont faff about with uncomfortable fashion!

I’ve never stopped wearing ballerinas. I have a good collection with decent soles. My favourites are Russell and Bromley

boxyboxs · 29/01/2025 16:03

Loafers & ballet shoes are always in. Yes they might not be the key piece of footwear for the season but that doesn't mean people will think they look real.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 29/01/2025 16:22

I've always had versions of ballet pumps and mary janes, in my shoe selection and regardless of fashion, they will always be a shoe of choice. My most recent purchase was a silver metal mesh pair, from H&M, in the sale and I love 'em, they are my happy shoes of the moment and I am liking this more innovative approach to mary janes of the last year or so.

boxyboxs · 29/01/2025 16:24

real should be out of fashion. Not sure what happened!

Justkoko · 29/01/2025 17:52

I know they aren't the most solid shoe for out and about, but fine for the office and drinks out. I don't want to be bang on trend or anything I just want reasonably timeless really. I like them, they suit me, that's good enough!

I hate wearing shoes without socks, so I stick to trainers and loafers, but they loafers have to come up higher on the top of my foot. For some reason ballerinas don't suit my foot, and I think I need a thicker sole.

RIPVPROG · 29/01/2025 19:11

Last time ballet flats were fashionable, I lived in them and ended up with plantar fasciitis 🤦‍♂️

vandel · 29/01/2025 19:38

I love them on others. On me they make my feet look like pancakes, and the lack of support makes me walk like a flipping duck too. I do like loafers or shoe boot type with a low heel. I wear trousers mostly though so that could make a difference.

Same here. Every shoe brand at all price points always had ballet pumps/ flat pumps in their range. I don't like loafers.

MayaPinion · 30/01/2025 10:11

I love the look of ballet flats but can never find ones that feel really supportive. How are the office ones?

Tipperttruck · 30/01/2025 10:12

I saw someone on the escalators on the way to work with ballet Mary Janes the other day. The poor woman looked chilled to the bone. I was in fur lined boots!

Snowmanscarf · 30/01/2025 10:14

I always buy Clark’s ballet shoes. I have a pair of black ones that have lasted for years.

These are hideous!

OneLilacGuide · 30/01/2025 10:56

I can’t get on board with the current ballet flat trend - I wore them a lot for most of the 2010s and my feet were so cold and wet in the winter and smelly in the summer 😩

Loafers are the way to go - the trend seems to be more for penny loafers now and M&S has some nice ones if you fancy a change? Also really liking the resurgence of driving shoes and boat shoes!

Me too! I was only early 20s as well! Luckily it resolved after a few very painful weeks and hasn’t returned.

Ballet flats look cute but don’t wear them if you are going to do a significant amount of walking.

I love them but yes!

owlexpress · 30/01/2025 15:14

I think the question is about mary jane ballerinas specifically, rather than ballet flats. OP, another couple of years yes, but I don't really think these will be a timeless classic. I think the mary jane strap will date them. (Caveat - I could be wrong).

Same. I love simple ballerinas on other women , but I have stupidly wide feet and so they go out of shape and look wrong on me, sadly, as I have a need for a simple shoe that works with both dresses and trousers.

How incredibly rude.

Still, I suppose it made you feel smug and superior for saying it.
