I have a tiny budget but need help! I am about a size 14 and short. Hourglass body type.
Most of my small selection of clothes don't fit. I have 2 pairs of lovely skinny trousers/ jeggings, expensive never seen the light of day. I feel like sausages if I wear them.

Any help most welcome.

Go to your local charity shop - cheap clothes, you donate to charity and save the planet by recycling. Win, Win, Win. X

StrangeNew · 25/01/2025 19:10

Bit more context needed.

Why do your clothes not fit - if you’ve put on weight is it temporary or do you anticipate it will be permanent?

Assuming you need a selection of new clothes, what is your lifestyle? How to you spend your time and what are your dressing priorities?

You probably already know that charity shops, Primark and supermarket clothing departments exist - so are you looking for inspiration for a specific event, or just recommendations for things people have seen that might suit your budget?

StrangeNew · 25/01/2025 19:19

Personally I find most charity shops deeply depressing and would rather spend a quiet hour in a decent branch of TK Maxx.

Great question, I gained a good stone quickly 10 years ago. I don't think it will go tbh.
So we are where we are.
Charity shops are OK for accessories or maybe a jumper. But hold limited appeal.

@StrangeNew I'd like things that look good and fit and go together. I am pretty active, walk here and there. Don't do fancy or nights out too much.

You know what, those skinny jeans/trousers are just not great, and you've described yourself as feeling like sausages, so it's probably time for them to go. You could donate them, or try to sell them but I can't imagine you'd get a lot for them as they are not currently so fashionable.
If you have a waist, you could try some wide leg trousers, which tend to look better with a closer-fitting top, or if you prefer not to emphasise your middle, you could try flares/bootcut or just straight leg torusers.

istheheatingonyet · 25/01/2025 19:51

@DelphiniumBlue Do you think wide leg are silly on a short person?

The sausage look was recommended by a personal shopper. Might get a few quid for them on Vinted.

DelphiniumBlue · 25/01/2025 23:10

I think you’d have to try some wide legs on. I know short people who carry them off very well, like I said, I think it depends on whether you are happy with a top that is fitted and either short or tucked in.
You could do worse than try some and take a few photos, maybe also try a few other styles. Try petite ranges, or shops that do ‘short’ lengths. M&S have some at good prices, as do Next, and you could try TKMaxx and H&M .

lambinapram · 25/01/2025 23:50

Rua dress from white stuff in petite. Looks great on hourglass. Wear with a petticoat to hide bumps.

HeddaGarbled · 26/01/2025 00:17

I’m a size 14 with short legs and I find straight leg trousers work best for me. M&S short jersey straight legs are good. Tu at Sainsbury also worth a look.

istheheatingonyet · 26/01/2025 10:23

Thanks, great ideas.

Vinted can be great if you know what you want, i.e. if you know your usual size in a particular shop you like. You need to look at the photos and the description carefully, but you can get some great bargains.

eBay is good too.

I'd sell and buy in eBay, but I'd probably only buy on Vinted.

MuddyBootsRugby · 26/01/2025 13:26

Try some "mom" jeans instead op.

ShredHead · 26/01/2025 13:33

Have you tried wearing the leggings with a longer top or minidress? I think your body shape always looks good in that type of outfit.

Photo for example of the style.

You've held on to two pairs of trousers you've never worn for 10 years?

Let them go. It's almost the end of sales. There are massive bargains out there

I know what you mean. It's the smell I don't like but I always think THE worst ideas are go to charity shops and look on vinted. If you have no idea to start with then you are going to find it extremely difficult!

veraswaistcoat · 26/01/2025 15:41

You haven't given us much help as you didn't say what you need the clothes form or your colours you like. Also the budget?

I would suggest you go to Matalan on line who have a little feature that helps you bring an outfit together.

I'm short, 55 and size 12. I like wide legged trousers (but not massively wide) in a slouchy fabric, so a jersey type thing will work. I wear them with trainers (white Stan Smiths or New Balance 327s - don't care if they're are too popular/mumsy/not edgy/whatever MN decrees, I like them) and I wear cropped jumpers, usually with a stripe. Cropped is a good length if you're short, it means you're not swamped - and they aren't cropped on us. I stick a long mac or beige wool coat (petite, so again I'm not drowned) over the top and have a slouchy handbag or an cross body one. I also wear dresses like @ShredHead posted - so tunic dresses or tiered above-knee dresses with thick tights and ankle boots or loafers. I do wear skinnies with bigger jumpers but roll up the legs and wear chunky pull on chelsea boots.

I'm not sure about that look tbh. But Thanks for your ideas.

@chargeitup no not 10 years! One pair was an expensive mistake from John Lewis suggested by the personal shopper. Perhaps I'll get a few quid for them on vinted?
The others are older, they need to go, you're right!

@SirChenjins , yeah I get that, I can see it working, Thanks

I'm a similar size and shape.

These Harper jeans from M&S are the ones that work best on me.

I like shortish dresses with black tights (absolutely not with leggings!).

What sort of things do you need to dress for? Work? Play? Day to day?
