Which pieces are worth buying in Primark?

I’m going to Primark to top up my wardrobe. I have some expensive pieces which I mix with cheaper ones.

I’m 44, size 10, 5’4”. Open to new styles so don’t want to restrict options. Please suggest anything you’ve liked.

Rita Ora collection is good.

OzCalling · 22/01/2025 18:57

None. It’s not even cheap anymore! All overpriced, badly made polyester rubbish which falls apart within a few wears.

Vinted is your friend.

That’s annoying 😂 I’m really out of touch. About to go shopping for the first time since losing my pregnancy belly and was hoping to freshen up my wardrobe cheaply. I’m already a Vinted and eBay addict.

It's cheap shit, I wouldn't call it 'peices'

CharlotteCChapel · 22/01/2025 19:16

I've never had any rubbish from Primark. I think a, lot of people who diss it have never bought anything from them

I used to just get long sleeve tops and things to go under suits. I’ll have to find another source now I’m going back to work!

I’ll go and have a look. If nothing else, I’ll stick up on tights.

Better off getting the basics in H&M OP. Similar prices and better quality.

dothehokeycokey · 22/01/2025 19:43

H and M

Zara

River island

Urban outfitters

Hollister

These all do decent basics like long sleeved tops etc

Also M and s surprisingly have well priced basics and they're good quality.

Just recently bought long sleeved tops black fitted tops to go under work clothes for the cold days and was so impressed I bought the short sleeve version and the vest top version

WilderHawthorn · 22/01/2025 19:49

Their jeans are comparable to H&M, new look, all the usual high street, I also like their basic vest tops for under shirts for a bit of warmth in the winter. Their active wear is useless and bobbles quickly, but their pyjamas and loungewear is comfy and cheap. Avoid the underwear at all costs IMHO!

henlake7 · 22/01/2025 20:37

I agree with PP, they are very good for basics and pajamas.
Their velvet plush leggings (the furry ones!) are fantastic in this weather, I live in them. Also their fleece lined tights are really good.
I'm well stocked with their vest tops, t shirts and long sleeved tops, quality wise they really aren't much different then any high st brand.
Their sportswear is also decent for the price.

Things like knitwear, blouses, dresses, etc can be hit and miss. You can find well cut things in good fabrics....but some of it can be really rough!

watersoul · 22/01/2025 20:39

Pyjamas are good. Nothing else I'm afraid!

lindyloo57 · 22/01/2025 20:49

I don't usually go in primark but after seeing a blogger wear the rita ora lace dress, I
I did buy it in the sale for £9.00 I haven't worn it yet though.

The tights are good right now. I've got some of their 200 denier black opaques on now and they are soft and comfy.

The edit straight leg jeans, Alpaca wool mix jumpers & trench coats are good. As are the edit wool cashmere socks. Other than that the large canvas tote bags are brilliant for lugging shopping/parcels around. Plus I like the burgundy colour.

StrongandNorthern · 23/01/2025 09:35

I don't think all of it is rubbish.
I still buy 'the basics' - long sleeved plain tops, fleece lined leggings (sooooo warm) etc. They wash well, and do not fall apart quickly.
Stick to the basics - v good value.
Some people are very snobby about Primark.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 23/01/2025 09:52

Primark has the odd gem and yes, prices have increased but that's everywhere.

In Primark yesterday, from their new range in and selling fast it seems from the few left on the racks, I bought 4 versions, of the same hip length, sleeveless vest style, wide strap top, very well made, heavyweight and a good knitted viscose mix and would have been happy to have paid double the £9 for each. Before Christmas I bought a couple of their souffle jumpers and one had a fairly good wool content too. Both are very warm and have washed exceptionally well, with some of these now on the sale racks, so might be worth browsing through those too. I wasn't sure about the fabric, but given the recent cold weather I am now a convert, so much so I bought DH a khaki fisherman style version, very classic in look and he likes it too and he is fussy about his clothing.

For comparison, I went into Mint Velvet on Saturday, and some of their items were very poor quality for the price, 100% polyester, and most failed the scrunch (put fabric in hands and scrunch) test, so I really don't think we can disregard any retailer's items now.

Happy hunting in Primark.

Nicecatneighbour · 23/01/2025 09:54

I buy pajamas and t shirts there, that's about it. The jumpers look nice, but I doubt they look as nice after a few washes. That said, I recently bought a £40 jumper in M&S that now is binnable after about 6 washes. The cloud yarn type. Rubbish.

Comedycook · 23/01/2025 09:55

I find most high street shops are not particularly great quality....so Primark doesn't stand out as being any worse than others.

caffelattetogo · 23/01/2025 09:55

Another vote for the velvet plush leggings - they are great base layers for skiing too. The homeware stuff is good, DC love the bath stuff and things like the big travel mugs and snuggly blankets.

Doggymummar · 23/01/2025 09:59

In our town we have Fatface next m and S and Roman only with a couple of boutiques and a million charity shops so I shop online. I love Uniqlo for what you are describing and am starting to like Hollister, I got some trousers in the sale. M and S is always reliable. I saw an Instagram influencer doing a Primark haul and there seemed to be some lovely stuff. Not sure what it's like up close tho.

whatcanwedoplease · 23/01/2025 10:01

Honestly primark isn't what it was, yes it was cheap you knew what you were buying, but now it isn't even cheap anymore ! So expensive crap 🤷‍♀️

LunaNorth · 23/01/2025 10:02

My favourite sweatshirt is from Primark!

Lovely and thick, washes like new, and hasn’t bobbled. Just the right amount of oversized, too.

It’s better quality than ones I’ve paid four times the price for!

So, sweatshirts!

Yes, me too. I bought one of their Cloud Yarn sweaters and it felt wonderful. But it bobbled instantly (I drove a short distance in it and the seat belt rubbed causing dozens of bobbles). So disappointed. I bought DD a different style sweater but also in their Cloud Yarn, and it bobbled instantly too.

allmycats · 23/01/2025 10:16

You need to look at the fabric composition. The Primark cotton T shirts I have bought wash well and I have some that are years old. Same as PJs on cotton. You need to be very selective about your choices.
