Uk break 2 days. What am I wearing ?

Gingerwino · 16/01/2025 20:53

I am overweight and a big 14-16 on a very short body.
I've gained another half a stone over Christmas and my ok clothes are awful. I feel horrid and and am going away this weekend and want to feel ok. Bit late in the day and I have clearly been head in sand and ignoring thoughts of what to wear Little of my wardrobe fits. Which I need to change.
I usually wear straight jeans , shirt, jumper
I also have One black top on repeat for going out (I know I know )
One "pull and bear" small granny print brown and orange dress - surprisingly flattering with tights and boots for a casual pub trip
Pleather trousers - not leggings - look "ok" with a polo neck
Wide leg black trousers with trainers - top is usually a t shirt tucked with a shirt over
I have a more formal green high neck dress with short sleeve but come to my elbow - too smart for where we are going though.

We'll be daytime drinks / ambling / walking in a park/ coffee then casual meal and pub kind of thing. Nothing fancy.
I own tonnes of coats but nothing super nice .
Reading that all back, I need to go shopping on arrival don't I ? What would you buy for a quick and cheap daytime outfit ? Was thinking wide leg jeans maybe at m and s and just buy what fits and not look at size! But my top half ? Am huge of belly. I have some nice jumpers so maybe a new shirt and jeans with one of those over is ok for bumbling about. Attached pic of my green dress so you can see my shape. Help me please vipers

Where are you going and what are you planning to do?

ApolloandDaphne · 16/01/2025 22:26

Your shape looks lovely btw.

minipie · 16/01/2025 22:26

Hello! Where are you going weather wise (is it UK?) and do you have any time for shopping before then? The green dress looks lovely on you btw

minipie · 16/01/2025 22:31

Are you apple shaped- large boobs and tum, short waist and thinner legs? If so then the short dress and tights look will work well, like your pull & bear one. Look for trapeze/swing shaped dresses, if possible with a v or slight scoop neck.

Do you have any comfy ankle boots? Do you have a chunky scarf to go with and/or oversized jumper?

Gingerwino · 16/01/2025 22:51

Longer body with shorter legs. 32E boobs so not huge. Not big enough to balance the belly anyway. There's a bit of a waist but not much ! Fit and flare dress used to be ok but not sure now !
Cold and dry weather. Uk large town
All help gratefully received and thanks for being nice about the green frock

I have maybe a short window tomorrow morning to go to. Tk maxx locally !

minipie · 16/01/2025 23:24

Ah ok gotcha. That’s my shape.

What do you have already that fits and you like? I think you’ll stand a better chance of creating outfits from what you have already rather than TK Maxx. Although you never know, you might find a gem. Do the clothes you mention in your OP fit? If the jeans don’t fit then may be worth a look in tk maxx for ones which do

mdinbc · 16/01/2025 23:52

No, don't go running around shopping unless it is for pleasure. It sounds like your wardrobe is serviceable, but not flashy.

Just make sure your outfits are coordinated. Can you throw in a light scarf that matches your shoes or handbag?

Backofthewardrobe on instagram shows nice outfits that are not fussy and she is a regular sized person, with average budget.

So wide or straight jeans, jumper, jacket, trainers and crossbody is just fine for city wandering. Your brown and orange dress just fine for pub night, you can even put a jumper over it, or a casual jacket.

Have fun, and I'm sure you look just lovely.

itsstillmehere · 17/01/2025 01:10

Honestly it sounds like you have enough clothes to do but if you felt like it you could buy a new coat that makes you feel good and pledge to sell or donate some of the ones that are not so great? The green dress is really lovely btw!

MeandEmLover · 17/01/2025 01:16

OP you look great in that green dress!

I understand your situation. I was in your shoes a year ago, I'd gained weight & was v uncomfortable in all my clothes.

I think you have some good basics in what you listed out but if you have the money & inclination I would recommend going to a big M&S store & buying a pair of jeans that for you really well & a nice top. You can wear them together & separately & having something new & that fits you well will give you an extra little boost & put a spring in your step and most importantly it will stop you stressing / focusing on what your wearing & you'll enjoy the time with your partner having fun & feeling good

Daytime i would aim to wear an outfit like:
Dark wash wide leg jeans
Nice trainers
A navy wool round neck jumper (merino, cashmere, lambswool etc)
Nice jewellery
A lightweight jacket. I'm a fan of the m&s stone coloured rain coat
Leather cross body bag

Dinner I'd wear the black wide leg trousers & a new blouse / top & smart trainers & the coat

Have a great trip

This is all really helpful. Have just chucked a really soft cream turtle neck in my basket at Tesco. Nice with the pleathers or jeans maybe. Also have £50 voucher so will get new jeans today when I get there if I can. Really helpful tha k you

I get my coats from charity shops and never spend a lot but people often say that my coats are stylish. As ever I recommend Vinted and eBay. It sounds like you have a lot of useful clothes already.

minipie · 17/01/2025 13:03

Have fun! And it’s a cliche but people look better when they feel more confident so try not to overthink the clothes and smile!!

Gingerwino · 17/01/2025 13:29

I'll abandon dh in a bar and get to m and s!

OP posts:
Gingerwino · 17/01/2025 18:44

Update. Went to m and s. Lovely wide leg jeans. Couldn't even hope to fasten a 16. Bought a lovely chunky cream cable cardi with big buttons for over a white shirt though.
DH being hateful thoughout and admitted he's unhappy with my weight. You and me both mate.

This green dress is beautiful- where's it from?

Your OH is being horrible about your weight. Dick.

Gingerwino · 17/01/2025 19:18

Dick indeed. This is my big birthday weekend and I shall not be down hearted

OP posts:
iamnotalemon · 17/01/2025 19:26

That's even worse!

I hope you have a wonderful weekend x

MeandEmLover · 17/01/2025 19:31

Oh OP that's totally crap & he should be ashamed of himself!

Jeans are the WORST thing to buy so don't beat yourself up.

I hope you can ignore his boorishness & still have a great weekend.

Looking at you in that green dress I have no idea what he's on about

Gingerwino · 17/01/2025 21:22

I'm full of cold and so we've come back to hotel 8.30 and I feel very very low. Sorry all. This wasn't meant to go this way !!

OP posts:
MeandEmLover · 17/01/2025 21:32

Oh you poor thing 😔
Has he made any effort today at all?
I'm sorry that he's ruining your big birthday weekend

It's a milestone to reach any & every milestone birthday, so many don't.

In the grand scheme of things who cares about a bit of extra weight. Weight can be gained & lost but you're here now & you're healthy & you've reached another decade & that's to be celebrated..he's being an arse

Princessfluffy · 17/01/2025 21:45

100% gorgeous women n that green dress OP.

I'm so sorry OP. No doubt your DH's twatty comments are part of that. Can I ask how old you are? I'm a v similar body shape (5' 1", short legs, normal length body - only need petite cut on the bottom half) and I've found since I turned 40 the weight is so so hard to keep under control.
The thing is when you're short every pound makes a difference in dress sizing, and it's easy to feel crap about yourself when suddenly your whole wardrobe isn't right.
BUT how do you feel when you're naked? I find I'm happier with my naked body than I am clothed at the moment.
Part of the problem is how hard it is to dress when you're not an "average" height/shape.
Do not let the marketing tactics of clothing companies upset you.
If you're a similar age to me, tell your DH to try a bit of perimenopause and see how he likes those apples! (Am secretly hoping he's balding so you can point out that there are things about his changing appearance that aren't exactly to your ideal standard too!)
