What shoes with this dress?

Thoughts? I think the silver ones look great, but I'm a bit too pale for that to work.

I'm pale. I wear silver shoes 🤷🏻‍♀️

Any metallics will be great. I also love turquoise and jade with white, hot pink too. Various shades of brown look good, as do most colours really. However, colour is also largely dependant on style. Some context would be helpful. What are you wearing the dress for and what style of shoes are you thinking of wearing?

It's for a dinner and a separate cocktail event - both dressy evening events leading up to a wedding in a warm climate. Although I'm shorter than the model, I think it's going to be a bit too big an expanse of pale leg for metallics to work.

I was debating these, but worry they might be a bit too dark.

I have these and like how they look, but find them phenomenally uncomfortable

It's not even that the dark pair are too dark, I think they're too chunky. I also wouldn't wear a dark coloured suede with white. The pink Valentino aren'r right either. Not a fan of high heeled Mary Janes.

I think you need a strappier, less clunky shoes. If you must go for a block heel, it needs to be lower. There's nothing remotely dressy about a high block heel. You want elegant. Neither shoes posted are it. But, given your suggestions, I think it's fair to say you and I have wildly different tastes.

If I was to wear the white dress, I would probably start looking at Aquazzura, their Ari or So Nude heel. Given the cutouts on the dress, I would even consider a Tequilla sandal or Darling mule. All shoes mentioned come in metallics and would go with pretty much any event dress. If my budget did not stretch to Aquazzura, I would look for similar elsewhere. I would also look at Loeffler Randall. They do some nice tulle and rhinestone ballet flats which would lovely with the dress as well as many other styles in a myriad of colours, fabrics and heels.

Edited

Thanks for trying!

I should have mentioned that quite a lot of it will be outside, so trying to avoid the dreaded lawn heel sinkage and/or picking my way through small stones in flimsy heels. I have Aquazzura So Nude sandals but think the heel is going to be too stiletto-y for the conditions.

I despise ballet flats, unfortunately.

I was going to suggest a style like this but less chunky and maybe velvet burgundy- a little warmer in tone? I think you need to go to somewhere like Dune and try and see. The chunky may detract from the dress too much.

noobiedoobie · 16/01/2025 15:58

Depends if you bringing any other colours in with accessories though, if not I'd maybe go for gold, even warming up to light brown leather. Or a taupe.

Sonant · 16/01/2025 16:27

Beautiful dress, I don't think the Hermès or the Valentino are quite right.

What's your general vibe @CertainUncertain?

Also height, how long is the dress on you?

Ohthatsabitshit · 16/01/2025 16:29

For me Docs but I appreciate I come from a different time!

Sonant · 16/01/2025 16:29

I can't wear ankle-straps either, unless a wide cuff style, they pull horribly on my ankles.

I'm not sure Dr Martens and Oscar de la Renta is the look @CertainUncertain is striving for!

CertainUncertain · 16/01/2025 16:43

Thanks all. To answer the questions

@noobiedoobie Not a lot of accessories. Probably just a few bracelets and my wedding rings and some earrings - possibly a pair of antique blue zircon ones. My Apple Watch is my most frequently worn accessory, but I'll probably remove it for this 😂

@Sonant My general vibe is slightly expensive slightly understated boho(ish), I think, if that makes any sense at all. I usually only want one standout thing in an outfit. I'm fine with ankle straps, it's the toe box on the Valentinos that is so awful - I have fairly narrow feet, but the leather is super stiff with no give at all. They're pretty miserable.

I'm 5'4", but long legs, short torso. The dress is about 3" above the knee.

@Ohthatsabitshit Another time and place, I'd totally go for that! My current favourite shoes are my clompy platform Chloe clogs (when I can separate DD from them), so you're not a million miles off.

The Hermes Oran are lovely shoes, but not right with the dress. However, now I know grass is a concern, it makes sense, ditto the Valentino. As much as I have a hatred for wedges, given the dress' retro/60s vibe, that might work. Otherwise, how about a Tibi Oscar perspex slingback or Curly Victor slingback? The latter two have fine yet sturdy heels which won't sink. Also, Suzanne Rae does a 70s sandal that will work. It has a more solid heel too and comes in gold, silver and sometimes, patent white.

Tbh, you've clearly got a good budget (hurrah), so why don't you go do some field research and hit Bond Street or the shoe mausoleum (Harrods)? I think that's the only way to do it.

An excuse to shop. Am envious. Happy shopping. Let me know what you end up with!

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 16/01/2025 16:47

PS. Sell the Valentino shoes. Life's too short to have shoes that make your feet miserable.

Time40 · 16/01/2025 17:06

OMG - you've bought a 1960s lampshade to wear as a dress! That's very original.

But to be serious, it's a nice dress and I'm sure you will look lovely in it. I'd pick up that 60s styling with a pair of low-heeled sling-backs in a nude, pale tan or cream colour - or yes, go for silver, as I don't think it matters about being pale.

CertainUncertain · 16/01/2025 17:12

Thank you all. Some really good suggestions.

@bunnybunnybunnybunny I really like those Curly Victors - wish they had a slightly higher heel, but might give them a try, but my God - those Suzanne Rae's. You would have to be way cooler than I am to get away with them. On me, they would literally look like I had borrowed them from my Grandmother 😅. Yes, I might have a wander down Bond Street but never Harrods - I can't bear it there. And I probably will see the Valentinos, assuming I can ever organise myself to do it.

@Londonmummy66 I definitely need some heel. I really like those Jimmy Choos! I always feel a bit like there's nothing actually holding my foot onto the shoe, but I might go try them on.

In the meantime, my sister is scouring her considerable shoe closet for me.

Much to my embarrassment, I do already own these - bought in a hurry for something and worn once. I guess they would work, at a push? I think I'm having trouble getting my head around the combination of English winter flesh and warm weather dressing at the moment

The Suzanne Rae's are amazing, aren't they?! I actually had a pair with the higher heel but sold them (for reasons I can't quite recall). The buyer bought them to wear at a Royal wedding, so if they'll be more than fine for you. Seriously though, you have a good budget so have some fun. Like you, I like to make a statement with my accessories, particularly shoes, so if you keep an open mind, you could end up with something seriously great that you've never even considered before. Otherwise, I hope you and your sister find something in the depth of your wardrobe 🙏🏻

PS. Harrods really is terrible. I usually end up in there once a year when I've had to go to Knightsbridge for something. I mostly go into to mourn what once was - the pet department and 'notions'. But, last time I was there, I did spend an hour in the shoe department which was a surprise. (Hence my suggestion)

MsWintertowne · 16/01/2025 17:46

Great. Now Suzanne Rae Pelaez will have to be my new best friend …

Those 70s sandals (with red socks on Insta) are just exactly me. (Unsurprising as that was the decade when I started to Buy My Own Clothes.)

I don’t have anything useful to add @CertainUncertain, as for that dress I’d want custom patent leather Ferragamo Varas in exactly the same colour - and I realise that’s not the look you’re aiming for.)

(I’m so glad to have seen your dress and the suggestions it’s prompted. Glorious nostalgia.)

DazedAndConfused321 · 16/01/2025 17:49

I'd go for a warm bronze sparkly shoe, especially if you're pale. The dress is reminiscent of styles from the 60s so chunky heels would look good

I'm very drawn to these with the dress. I do think a mule would work.

https://www.net-a-porter.com/en-gb/product/3589493616203863

Although I'm not usually a fan of transparent shoes I think these would look striking. Almost a non-shoe with a hint of metallic to let the dress speak.

If I've gone totally off-message, let me know!

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 16/01/2025 18:21

@Sonant I had a pair of Amina Muaddi pvc martini heels. The pvc is horribly hard, does not give, nor allow the skin to breathe.. Gave me the most godawful blood blister. Buy the wedges at your peril! Definitely style of substance. That said, I do love a perspex shoe, particularly with metallic ankle socks.

The Dries are dreamy. LOVE 🥰

Sonant · 16/01/2025 20:33

Ahh, good to know @bunnybunnybunnybunny, I have a pair of Amina Muaddi leather mules that are very comfortable and have never strayed into PVC. I can see that for a wider foot (as I have) they may be unforgiving.

Sonant · 17/01/2025 02:33

I do have to say @CertainUncertain I have a Jil Sander dress very similar to the de la Renta, it's cream, trapeze, crew neck, it does have short sleeves. I'm taller than you (5' 8"), I guess it's a bit longer because it hits me just above the knee.

Anyhoo, I wear it with Hermès Oran red slides and mad YSL 1970s giant red sunglasses.

And a red suede clutch I found in a charity shop.

I do love the cream architecture of the dress against my pale skin and mad glasses with matchy red accessories.

I accept that might not be your look!

But it's a good dress to play against.
