Help! I’m 56 and need a new moisturiser, I’ve been using L’Oreal age perfect but to be honest it’s not that great. My skin is prone to being dry, tight, and tired looking. I’m using inkey list plumping serum but need a good moisturiser. It needs to be cruelty free, and I’m not good with Vitamin C ones as they seem to sting my skin.

Any recommendations? Oh budget is up to £25 but preferably less 🤞

Dry suggests diet or hormones; tight suggests a too harsh cleanser; tired looking - not enough sun or sleep - do you take Vitamin D and get a good night’s sleep, and fresh air? (Apologies if that all seems basic or obvious.)

I’m rather older than you and find a facial oil works better than any moisturising cream. It’s worth experimenting until you find the one that suits you best. I really like G. Baldwin & Co as a source of excellent oils and other stuff useful for face and body.

Try Cetaphil, it is the only moisturiser which makes my skin feel fresh. The one in the round tub with green lid.

hedgehogsinthehedgerow · 14/01/2025 15:17

Have you thought about an oil? I use the garnier hemp oil and like that.

DatingDinosaur · 14/01/2025 15:25

"My skin is prone to being dry, tight, and tired looking."

Mine too. The joys of centrally heated estrogen deficient skin eh? If all I want is intense moisture (as in, nothing to brighten and plump up) I use Aqueous cream from Savers - 69p a tube. A little goes a long way. Non greasy.

Steam Cream rose absolute is my go-to for a rich and nourishing cream - which doesn't irritate my irritable skin. It is great, especially during winter months. Really gorgeous stuff!

Definitely a lack of oestrogen! I’m as dry as a crisp all over 😂
An oil is a good idea actually. And I was thinking of cetaphil or Cerave, for a cream. I’m fed up of wasting money on expensive big name skin care that promises the world and does nothing!

Cetaphil night cream during the day if you're ok with the sweet almond oil it now has, or Cerave night cream :)

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 14/01/2025 15:38

Astral is good, and can be used all over the body. Maybe a bit too rich for day wear, but depends how you it feels on your skin. It's not fancy, but it's very good for my dry skin.

Eucerin 5% Urea cream is also good - light but good for tight skin.

Ilovemyshed · 14/01/2025 15:40

I've recently switched to Nivea Q10 and think its great, especially the night serum. I picked up a set in TKMaxx but will buy it going forward as its so good.

I can’t seem to find a Cerave night cream? Any chance you could link to it?

I use Rosehip oil at night and /or Castor oil mixed with sweet almond oil and Frankinsense. In the day - I use Embryolisse cream. The other thing which seems to be the answer to everything from a bruise to a broken leg is drink more water!

KittenPause · 14/01/2025 16:37

When my skin feels dry I use a facial oil or Revolution Pro Miracle cream.

KittenPause · 14/01/2025 16:39

M&S sleep cream is really good too

Menopants · 14/01/2025 16:56

I love lumene and they have lots of products really reduced in boots atm

I got this from Amazon - it was really cheap and lasts forever. Has been so much better than the expensive brands.

I’ve been using grim facial oils, currently mixing their pumpkin oil with Nivea softest

canyouletthedogoutplease · 14/01/2025 17:07

I'm using a tiny drop of castor oil rubbed in my palms then massaged into my face between serum and moisturiser to ward off the winter dull and dry and can really tell the difference.

Wiglio · 14/01/2025 17:08

Gruum not grim🙃 Manchester company with very good sale items

I got some of this last time I was in France. It is rather good. https://www.laroche-posay.co.uk/en_GB/hydraphase-hyaluronic-acid-rich-moisturiser/LRP_077.html

I'm older than you and I use a facial oil every night. Clarins when I'm feeling posh but bio oil works just as well. In fact I've been known to fill up a nice glass bottle with bio oil as it looks nicer on the dresser!

I am your age and really like Sali Hughes' Cream Drench Rich Anytime Moisturiser. Feels no-nonsense and my skin tolerates it very well. Link here but they also sell it at Boots.

I know you said you don't like Vitamin C but I combine this cream with Sali Hughes' Vitamin C serum in the morning and Revolution Miracle Night Serum (a dupe of Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair, I think) and find is nourishing and effective. Much cheaper than many other products I have used in the past and vegan and cruelty-free which is also very important to me.

Just out of interest, what does castor oil do for your skin? A few of you seem to really rate it.

I thought you took a spoonful for health.
