Help! I’m 56 and need a new moisturiser, I’ve been using L’Oreal age perfect but to be honest it’s not that great. My skin is prone to being dry, tight, and tired looking. I’m using inkey list plumping serum but need a good moisturiser. It needs to be cruelty free, and I’m not good with Vitamin C ones as they seem to sting my skin.

Any recommendations? Oh budget is up to £25 but preferably less 🤞

I’m 55. I swear by the Boots No 7 Future Renew range!

A huge bottle of almond oil will last for £10. Good for removing eye makeup and using as a facial oil.

...last for months (don’t know how to edit!)

Weleda skin food is amazing.
Second using castor oil, its so thick and perfect for extremely dry skin. A good healer as well for acne, cuts and sores.

I have very dry and sensitive skin which was made even worse due to hormones. It's been transformed using Hyaluronic acid serum morning and night before moisturising putting on Rosehip Oil overnight. Both from The Ordinary.

My mum loves Liz Earle the hot cloth cleanser , day and night creams, she has sensitive skin that is prone to dryness she's 61 so a bit older than you, but your skin seems more like hers than mine. Mine is combination and I used to get eczema either side of my nose when I was young, rosehip oil products really work for me.

I have two moisturisers from White Rabbit skincare. They are a Scottish company, completely vegan and cruelty free. Their products are amazing!

I’ve just been looking at Weleda skin food, they do a few different ones now. I’m torn between the original and the nourishing day cream. Definitely need an oil as well I think.

I also love the Cetaphil cream in the huge pot with the green top. It’s under £20 at Superdrug and lasts forever used on face, neck and chest twice a day.

It’s fairly basic. My dermatologist recommended it because she said the very few creams that actually do anything more than moisturise cost a bomb. I use a prescription for that, anyway. The Cetaphil effectively fulfils the moisturising brief with no irritants. Even though it is thick it never breaks me out.

M&S Formula range

It’s absolutely amazing. I also use the day cream.

A tip from working out a regime on The Ordinary is to put a (fairly plain) moisturiser over an oil, which is a game changer if you find you don't really like the texture of oil. It locks it in and means it doesn't rub off on your pillow either.

And of course the top top MN tip for night stuff is do it earlier. After dinner, or when you come home, especially if you wear make-up. I think that means you get more benefit out of it but if you do end up sitting up late like I do (in fact, like I'm doing now!) you'll have already done your skincare and can just go straight to bed!

I've recently started using Boots Glow - 50ml tube for £5 and it's lovely!
I'm 54 with dry skin and it honestly makes my skin feel like velvet.

I use Antipodes avocado night cream and it’s wonderful. It’s great for day too, if reallydry. Most important,y it’s natural. Those commercial creams are full of rubbish your skin doesn’t need

I use Rosehip oil at night and /or Castor oil mixed with sweet almond oil and Frankinsense. In the day - I use Embryolisse cream. The other thing which seems to be the answer to everything from a bruise to a broken leg is drink more water!

Castor oil can be hard to use, as it's very thick... however I let mine down with avocado oil...
Using (black) castor oil on my eyebrows and eyelashes has noticeably thickened them.

Castor oil is beneficial for so many things, including using it as a pack on your tummy.

As I got into my fifties I noticed how my usual lotions and moisturisers were no longer satisfactory.

Oils def helped my skin.

At the very least, I use an organic coconut oil..
.... if I want to spend more than that, I use oil based products from
"The Ayurvedic Experience"

Good luck op, I think that the way you feel in your own skin is so important for good mental health.
I believe glowing skin can give you a glowing confidence.

Just out of interest, what does castor oil do for your skin? A few of you seem to really rate it.

I thought you took a spoonful for health.

I can only advocate for its use topically.

If you want more health related info on the use of castor oil, look up Barbara O'Neill on YouTube...

Lafee · 15/01/2025 01:59

Not an oil....
BUT
Get yourself a 100% pure silk pillowcase.

I wake up with a smoother skin after a nights sleep, an it also leaves my hair smoother too.

As they are so light in weight, they wash and dry very fast too, so you don't really need to buy a spare to change with.

I found mine to be a game changer.

Don't be fooled by the cheaper satin pillowcases.

stayathomer · 15/01/2025 02:09

No 7 perfect and protect? Just because it’s in the same realm as L’Oréal which you previously used- I personally am mid 40s and use avene but that is more about hydration than anything else

I do this, too.
