I can't wash my hair for 5 days

VinoVida · 13/01/2025 14:48

It's fine and gets greasy quickly. This is due to an operation I'm having - can't shower or wash hair until I've had a check up after 5 days. How do I not feel embarrassed to leave the house on the 5th day? I've bought dry shampoo but I don't think that'll really do the job. Any miracle products out there or suggestions for washing hair without washing hair?

My neighbour used something like this when she was not well enough to shower.

Dry shampoo and tie it up if it's not a head problem / get someone to french plait it, it's always better in greasy hair.

Is the OP on your head / neck or is it a shoulder issue or similar in which case someone else could wash it for you at home or the hairdressers

VinoVida · 13/01/2025 15:01

It's my eye. I so envy people who can plonk it on top of their head and still look fab. It's also times like this I regret having a fringe!

This is the best thing I've ever heard - thank you!

So if it's your eye could a hairdresser manage to wash your hair in their lay back sinks without causing an issue? Do that the day before your appointment and get them to french plait it so it's out of your way for the next day if that's ok.

Not that hospital staff would mind ofcourse, they are used to all sorts.

Tie back and use an alice band to hold back your fringe.

AnotherFuckingUsername · 13/01/2025 15:10

Wash as late as possible and dry with a hairdryer - don't leave to air dry. Then use dry shampoo immediately after hair dried (after hair drying, before op and before the grease builds up starts).

Keep up, away from face and fingers.

Then, as been shared - dry shampoo cap.

Hope op goes well for you and you make a speedy recovery Flowers

I had this problem when I had an eye operation a couple of years ago. I can't bear having greasy hair and also have fine hair that basically never survives sleeping on it! So I invested in a pair of diving/scuba goggles 🥽 😆 - but they worked - I could stand in the shower and quickly wash my hair!
I did a test run with them before the op.
Would your operation allow something like that to work?

VinoVida · 13/01/2025 15:11

All great suggestions, thank you!

Good luck with the op 💐

After applying the dry shampoo, blow dry the roots of your hair

WifeOfMacbeth · 13/01/2025 15:12

I'd just wear a scarf or a beret - chances are it'll be cold out! I also find tying my hair up in a scrunchy makes it look better if it's in need of a wash.

SleepingisanArt · 13/01/2025 15:16

As a PP said - get goggles! Either the scuba ones or the really big ones which sit outside the eye socket. I did this when I had an eye op - started every day in hysterics when I caught sight of naked me wearing goggles getting into the shower! (I have short hair and look like Beaker from the Muppets when I wake up so a shower is not an option!)

crazyBadger · 13/01/2025 15:22

After cataract surgery my dad went to local hairdressers they said they do this all the time and were very careful with strategic places towels across his head/face... He went every other day for two weeks .... He kept them in danish and chocolates as they refused to take any money ;)

VinoVida · 13/01/2025 15:25

Unfortunately I have to limit my movement as I'll have a gas bubble in my eye so it needs to be a super quick affair as I can't stand for more than 10 mins :-(

I'm on day four. I don't use shampoo on my hair either.

Scrub your scalp well, not with nails, just finger tips

Caspianberg · 13/01/2025 15:49

I wouldn’t worry for 5 days. Just a proper wash including scalp the day before operation. Then put hair up a few days or put a hat on outside if you prefer. It’s cold anyway.

If your not supposed to stand more than 10 mins your only going to at home realistically anyway.

edwardcullensotherwoman · 13/01/2025 16:12

When is the op, and how often do you wash your hair usually? Maybe worth trying to leave it an extra day at a time before washing in the lead up to the op?
covering your hair to sleep can help too, like in a satin cap or something, so it doesnt get greasy from hands/face/sweat while you’re asleep.
All the best for your op 🙂

Newhi · 13/01/2025 16:15

If you can’t stand for more than 10mins will you be able to go outside?

pizzaHeart · 13/01/2025 16:18

I’d do proper wash : washing twice with shampoo, conditioning ends, blow drying. Then use dry shampoo and change pillowcase every day.

My (16 YO) daughter recently had a big ear op and wasn't allowed to wash hair for 2 weeks (and then was told to 'hold a cup' over her ear in the shower- cue horror and upset).
We bought one of these and she wore in at a jaunty angle in the shower- it was tight because it's designed for kids but it worked a treat and kept the water off her ear/face.

Really it's not worth it. I've had six eye operations. Dry shampoo powder not a good idea to have that floating around either.

It's winter. Put on a hat.

Good luck with your operation.

CoastalCalm · 13/01/2025 16:31

Was in same situation recently and the shower hair wash caps worked well but they had a very odd smell !

mugglewump · 13/01/2025 16:34

I too bought a hair/head ring after my first cataract operation, but feeling more bold just wore an eye shield and taped it up with waterproof tape after the second. The idea of going to the hair dressers to get your hair washed is a good one, making sure they take extra care to keep water away from your eye. I wouldn't go for the goggles option as they might add pressure to your eye.
