Should I shave my face?

Women shaving was very much frowned upon but now, I'm 55 (f) and getting a bit hairy. Used to just pull out a few errant hairs and wax my upper lip but it's getting a bit past that. Regular visits to the salon is not an option for me. Any recommendations and/or tips would be welcome.

Yes! I’ve been doing it for years now, ever since bloody menopause turned me into the bearded lady. It’s just a non-issue. I shave in a few seconds in the morning while I wash my face, then forget all about it and do the same the following morning. No worries, no drama, no expense.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 10/01/2025 19:47

Facial epilator. Get some numbing cream to put on first. Wipe it off totally before epilating.

Thepossibility · 10/01/2025 19:58

I shave mine in the shower once a week. Great result.

myplace · 10/01/2025 20:00

Me too. It’s the easiest way. Plucking gives me ingrown hairs and spots.
I use DH’s old electric shaver every few days.

Frostfrond61 · 10/01/2025 20:03

I have had to shave my chin for years.I get stubble as the day goes on.I really would avoid if possible.

Hoppinggreen · 10/01/2025 20:04

Yes, i do it every couple of days in the morning while cleaning my teeth.

Motnight · 10/01/2025 20:06

I had to shave my face to prepare for layering. It was awful. I could feel feel the stubble within 12 hours m

mrsfollowill · 10/01/2025 20:16

Do you have dark hair/pale skin? If you do the Lumea has worked wonders for me. You have to shave but then give it the once over with the Lumea and it really reduces regrowth so you do not get sharp stubble. Took some perseverance but has pretty much eliminated everything for me.
Works all over including the face so I have hairless armpits/legs too.
I paid £300 in 2020 - was worth every penny.
I'd wanted one for years and saved a ton when work sent us all to WFH with laptops in March 2020.
Edited to remove link that appeared - it was in a sale- they are about £500 full price

ShadowsOfTheDays · 10/01/2025 20:17

I do, takes about one minute once a week.

There are so many threads on here asking how to get rid of facial hair, and the answer is so easy, just shave! It's absolutely fine.

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 10/01/2025 20:19

Oh thank god, I was totally expecting to open this thread and read multiple replies stating “don’t do it!” I do OP, it takes about 30 seconds. I’d love to save for a lumea though.

myplace · 10/01/2025 20:22

Lumea’s is no good for me. Most of my hair is white.

Possiblynotever · 10/01/2025 20:23

I have the same problem, but my most stubborn ones on the chin are blonde...someone told me that Lumea does not work on blond hair: is it true?

Shubbypubby · 10/01/2025 21:35

I have very dark hair all over my body and have shaved my facial hair since I was about 14. I also pluck.

Meandhimtogether · 10/01/2025 21:56

I can't have laser treatment as I had hormonal breast cancer.
Been shaving ever since.
Looked at getting electrolysis, no where within 30 miles.
Plus they have a waiting list.

Might try an epilator
@EveryOtherNameTaken where do you get numbing cream from.

BringOnTheSunshineNow · 10/01/2025 21:59

Wax?

hollysmumma · 10/01/2025 23:00

Thanks for all the replies, I'm going to give it a go, what's the worst that could happen?

I do.

ImNotThereAmI · 11/01/2025 09:18

Yes. There’s no issue with it at all. People always say it makes it grow back thicker and darker but how could it? Shaving is cutting the hair very close to the skin, but above the root. It can’t make it grow back any different at all, it’s not stopped growing, just continues as it was before. It can make the end more blunt which I suppose could make it look thicker, but whether you pluck or shave, that “thicker” hair is going away so does it matter? I’ve shaved (now calling it dermaplaning!) and plucked and used a lumea. Ive never waxed because I refuse to let hair grow long enough to be waxed.

Shubbypubby · 11/01/2025 21:14

@ImNotThereAmI I've shaved my face, legs etc for 30 years and the hair is exactly the same as it always was. If shaving made hair grow back darker and thicker all men would be able to grow thick black beards! I know there are other options but shaving is quick, convenient and painless.

CherryogDog · 12/01/2025 09:52

I shave my face, the hair is very pale, but there's a lot of it!
I also have three bristles, which are darker.
I tried one of those blade things, but just ended up cutting myself because I'm so cack handed.

Jumbledig · 12/01/2025 10:00

I tried it once, but the stubbly feeling was unpleasant very quickly. If this happens to you, then depilating cream leaves "softer" ends and avoids this problem. (Though be warned that it may irritate your skin, especially if you've recently shaved!).

These days I use an epilator (Braun SilkEpil, although other types may be just as good for all I know) and find it gives fantastic results in very little time. It hurt a lot the first time - wish I had known about the numbing cream! - but that was years ago and it's not really painful now, especially since if you use it every week then there's not much regrowth and I think the hair roots get weaker with regular use.

Just asked in Boots. Can't remember the name offhand as I just epilate without now.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 14/01/2025 22:43

The cream is called Emla.

Once you get used to epilating, you'll wonder why you didn't do it earlier. Not having to worry every say.

It does hurt at first but it's worth it.
