Thinning hair

Does anything actually work for thinning hair? I'm taking biontin and am being served up adverts for some sort of serum.

It's not horrendously bad but I can see it every time I look at my hair. Prob caused by menopause.

Bumping.
Mine is thinning, which is annoying as I'm early 30s.

Been taking biotin and using serum from Kerastase - seeing some tiny improvement but it's more random tiny hairs

Pallisers · 08/01/2025 17:27

I was talking to an older friend recently - her doctor advised her to drink about 4 ounces of tonic water (proper one with quinine) before bed every night for neuropathy in her feet. As a side effect she noticed her hair is growing. Apparently it is a side effect.

My hair is thin and always has been. I have been using Champo for a year, absolutely no difference. Took biotin as well, waste of time for me. 🤷‍♀️

I got sucked in!!

CoffeeBeansGalore · 08/01/2025 17:48

This worked for me.
Super complex vitamin B (I use Linden's, available on ebay).
L'Occitane strength & volume shampoo. There is a conditioner available if you need it.
Took about 8 weeks to see regrowth & thickening. I'm now 2 years on & my hair is back looking & feeling thick & healthy.

*I have no association with either brand. Just a happy customer.

My hair badly thinned when my Dad was terminally ill and I started using Plantur 39 shampoo. It's made a huge difference to my hair, and I've carried on using it. I've also upped the protein in my diet as I wasn't great before (vegetarian).

roota · 08/01/2025 17:53

I use the Ordinary Hair Density Serum - fairly expensive but I only use it around my hairline it seems to work pretyy well and the active ingredient (bacailin?) is proven to help with it! A bottle lasts around 3 months.

Also avoid strong SLS based shampoos - get natural ones instead without SLS.

LeaveALittleNote · 08/01/2025 18:30

I'm watching for tips. I am considering some sort of hair topper at this point (I've got loss and breakage around the hairline, but the rest of my hair is alright). They're so expensive though. This is the kind of thing that I want while I try and find ways to regrow and strengthen my hair in the meantime https://www.youtube.com/shorts/lnDCaFA1oks

Biotin does work, but it takes time. I’ve been taking it for a long time, using the highest strength. Also proven to work is Rosemary oil( mixed with another oil, as it is strong) rubbed into the scalp, and apparently has as good a result as the very expensive treatment, minoxidil.
Also, be kind to your hair, blot, not rub after washing. I have short hair, so just comb, leave it to dry, and style it with my fingers. I have been using gel or mousse to thicken it, but it seems volumising root powder is more effective, and reviews are good, so will try that.

Littleguggi · 08/01/2025 18:33

Struggling with the same issue here! Tried champo serum but struggling to use it consistently, prefer the shampoo and conditioner but again don't use it often. What's really helping lately is the pink keratese shampoo and conditioner plus a head massage tool every night. Not seeing hair growth but hair is shiny and seems stronger.

Letstheriveranswer · 08/01/2025 18:36

Minoxidil foam works, but you do have to keep using it.

Also, keep iron levels good and have thyroid checked

nzeire · 08/01/2025 19:04

I’ve been getting hyrolonic acid treatments, every 4 months, had the third yesterday. This is injecting tons of moisture into it and it is lush and glossy.
I’m into my fourth month of capsules, and serum. Brand called Kiri, New Zealand.

my hair is just so different, not dpindky and thin, thick(er) and just in such great condition

im mid 50s, so it’s possible. Perserve with the supplements, read reviews x

Have had thinning hair for a number of years, in the last year I've really made an effort try things I haven't tried before (mostly costly serums and shampoos previously that made no difference) and have noticed a definite change. I've been consistent with taking supplements, mostly folic acid, was taking Perfectil Hair for a good six months. Plus a heaped desert spoon of sunflower and pumpkin seeds daily. I'm just about to start Perfectil Hair again having just finished my latest packet of folic acid.
Will be adding Plantur 39 and some rosemary oil to my shopping list.
What sort of head massage tool please @Littleguggi ?

Summervibes24 · 08/01/2025 19:30

Have the same issue and low iron levels so prob need to sort that out first.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 08/01/2025 19:30

I've been taking Biotin and a multivitamin with iron and its helped, started with baby hairs about 4 months in, still growing out but its def thicker around my scalp.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 08/01/2025 19:43

There's a recent episode of Sliced Bread on BBC Sounds on hair loss products. Worth a listen

I'm having issues with this, one of the things my hairdresser advised against is wearing my hair in a top knot/bun too much, which I'm guilty of doing a lot to keep my hair out of the way. Apparently that puts pressure on the hair and makes it break & pull at the root more.

I've stopped it since then and noticed an improvement. Still feels thinner, but not losing as much when I was it any more (previously it would be coming out in handfuls when rinsing my hair)

QuartzIlikeit · 08/01/2025 22:49

I had blood tests at the gp because handfuls of my hair were falling out for no reason.

Bloods showed I lacked iron & folic acid. I've been taking prescription strength tablets for these for nearly 3 months now & my hair is definitely improving.

My hairdresser told me at my last appointment just before Christmas that I've got new hair growth all over my head that is about 2 months old - which completely fits with me taking the tablets.

I'd suggest asking for blood test or just start taking specific iron & folic acid tablets. When my prescription runs out at the end of the month I'm going to keep buying them myself as the difference has been so noticeable.

Rubyruby101 · 08/01/2025 23:01

Good idea to get bloods checked as my daughter found out she is low on vit D . Hair loss , fatigue & sleep issues are her main symptoms .

Mindyourfunkybusiness · 08/01/2025 23:08

I had mad low iron and derm told me to use those shampoos for dandruff and on my current shampoo it says selenium ds salicylic acid. Before I saw her in desperation I bought ketoconazole shampoo and she said that was fine but the selenium/salicylic acid is better. I don't suffer from dandruff BTW.

So my ferritin was 6 and derm said it needs to be over 40 for healthy hair growth. And to use above shampoo. I've been taking iron for 6m and allegedly I have some hair growth back she said and to continue using the shampoo.

Oh and usual healthy diet etc

DancingFerret · 08/01/2025 23:13

I started using Champo (serum only) about a year ago. The blurb says people should notice a difference after using it for three months, but it did take longer for me. That said, one year on my hair is much fuller and my hairdresser pointed out new growth (shorter hairs growing on the crown) about six months ago.

Thinkpositivethoughts1 · 08/01/2025 23:13

Minoxidil foam works but be careful when applying it. I’ve just had to stop using it because I have excessive hair growing on my face!
Apparently this can be a side effect… but may have been caused by clumsy application; or transference from my pillow.
I’m disappointed because I definitely had regrowth in the time I’d used it.
