Thinning hair

Does anything actually work for thinning hair? I'm taking biontin and am being served up adverts for some sort of serum.

It's not horrendously bad but I can see it every time I look at my hair. Prob caused by menopause.

I’d recommend getting blood tests as my hair started to thin last year, I had blood tests for another reason and the results showed I was very low in ferritin. High dose supplements stopped it.

I've been using Champo for a few months around my hairline as that's where I noticed thinning and I have new baby hairs all around my face. I use consistently everyday in the morning. I am trying to be sparing with the amount I use just on parting and hairline but I need to consider using all over my crown to try to improve the entire thickness.

Check that there's no medical reason for your hair loss first.
My hair has been thinning awfully for over 2 years, I reckon I've lost 2/3 of the thickness.
I've tried minoxidil (hated how it made my hair sticky), shampoos, biotin. Not much has really helped, but I've recently started using this serum from amazon and you know its really helping. I've got plenty of baby hair around my temples https://amzn.eu/d/czchHL6

I use the hair serum from UK Lash. The eyelash serum worked for me and so did the eyebrow serum so I thought I'd give the hair serum a try. At my last hair appointment my hairdresser commented on all the new baby hair growth around my thinning hairline. So it's working!

I’ve tried all the expensive products, but what works best for me is treating my (short) hair roughly - swimming pool chlorinated water, sea water, washing hair with cheap shower gel - swells the hair shaft and appears fuller.

An accidental finding was cheap supermarket dandruff shampoo having a similar effect. (though never had dandruff).

I think the biotin and HRT also help. (Recently heard that biotin can affect certain blood test results, so I need to stop taking them for a number of days beforehand)

Have you tried Perfectil Original for Skin, Hair & Nails? Also, avoid too much brushing, tying hair up in tight ponies etc, too much washing, blow drying, heat styling, dry shampoo….all these things will weaken and compromise your fragile hair. Some days I don’t brush my hair at all, especially when at home. I do think most women over process and handle their hair generally.

roota · 09/01/2025 21:50

I agree with too much pony tails, washing, drying, dry shampoo etc etc but I believe that anything that stimulates blood flow to the scalp is good and that includes brushing (upside down especially helpful) as this gets vital nutrients to the scalp and root and helps it grow better. Daily brushing upside down to get the blood flow I've found really helpful.

I've been using this combination for a few weeks now, obviously it can't be having any real effect yet, however I have definitely noticed a reduction in my hair loss, less in the bath/shower when I wash it. My hair feels stronger and a bit less fragile.

Thanks everyone will make a list of things to try.

I had blood tests at the gp because handfuls of my hair were falling out for no reason.

Bloods showed I lacked iron & folic acid. I've been taking prescription strength tablets for these for nearly 3 months now & my hair is definitely improving.

My hairdresser told me at my last appointment just before Christmas that I've got new hair growth all over my head that is about 2 months old - which completely fits with me taking the tablets.

I'd suggest asking for blood test or just start taking specific iron & folic acid tablets. When my prescription runs out at the end of the month I'm going to keep buying them myself as the difference has been so noticeable.

Same here - 6 months into taking prescription iron tablets I have baby hairs sticking up everywhere (my hair grows very verrrrrry slowly) - in addition bags more energy and bye bye restless legs!

Minoxidil foam works but be careful when applying it. I’ve just had to stop using it because I have excessive hair growing on my face!
Apparently this can be a side effect… but may have been caused by clumsy application; or transference from my pillow.
I’m disappointed because I definitely had regrowth in the time I’d used it.

Are you applying it directly before bed? I watched a YouTube video of a doctor advising you need to apply it at least an hour prior to bed to reduce it transferring from your head to your face via your pillow.

Yes I was! Thanks I didn’t realize this. A hair specialist recommended Minoxidil but he didn’t say anything about best time to apply or mention this as a side effect.
I’ve stopped taking it now and apparently my unwanted facial hair will go in time.
I may then restart the treatment and be more careful in its application. I didn’t realize how effective it was; I definitely saw regrowth on my head. I’m also wondering if some of the foam dripped onto my face when I reached the end of a bottle, when it becomes more liquid. Just be careful!

I have been doing the following for about 15 years: perfectil, EP oil, grow gorgeous and oily fish several times a week.

I also buy the active ingredients, like scullcap, ginsen, red clover, larch, pea extract and add additional amounts to the bottle.

This was in response to me realising my hair was starting to thin at the temples and parting. It has pretty much stayed the same since then. It was so bad when I first noticed, that I anticipated I would need a wig/specialist hair extensions within 6-6 years and was pricing it all up.

I also am not afraid to wash and brush my hair: It's good for your follicles and does not make your hair fall out.

EdinaMonsoon · 11/01/2025 17:24

I have been using Nioxin system for 2 months together with Champo serum. My hair is definitely improving, albeit slowly. My hair dresser told me that Nioxin is now approved by the Menopause Society (or some national group, at least…not sure of the exact name).

CinnamonJellyBeans · 11/01/2025 18:39

I have been using nioxin shampoo and conditioner for about ten years. I find the shampoo quite harsh. It doesn't actually contain any ingredients which are known to reduce hair loss. I think it makes your hair look fuller by roughing up the cuticles, so the hair shaft has more volume. The conditioner has a lot of menthol in, which causes a tingling feeling and makes you feel that something is "working", but menthol is not known to boost hair growth.

Having said that, I still use them on and off, as they are relatively cheap . But I am convinced that they make my hair feel rough.

As the for Champo hair serum, I think the reviews and adverts are fake, like the fb ones where they just happen to come across a young, vital female (buying fruit, I think?) and it transpires that she was bald before she started on the champo. I think the reviews are fake, because champo serum contains only one active ingredient: Red clover extract. There are other serums out there with more active ingredients that cost less, like the Ordinary one.

Thinkpositivethoughts1 · 12/01/2025 21:42

@CinnamonJellyBeans I agree completely.
I saw a trichologist and he recommended Nioxin for fuller looking hair but said it does not make your hair regrow. I haven’t tried it yet.
Totally agree with you also about Champú serum. I’ve used it for more than a year and it’s made no difference to the area I applied it to. I feel it’s a big con; I just bought it because I saw the adverts on Facebook.
The only product my specialist recommended is Minoxidil; he said it’s backed up by scientific tests.
I also take Perfectil for hair because I know then that I’m not short of essential vitamins and minerals. It definitely makes my nails whiter and stronger; no idea if it helps with hair loss.

alesiawillis · 29/10/2025 06:19

Hormonal changes around menopause can definitely mess with hair thickness, it’s common but annoying. Supplements that support scalp and follicle health from within can really help over time. Sea buckthorn oil (like what’s in femininity’s smooth as silk+) has been great for strengthening hair and encouraging regrowth naturally.
