Help me re a fringe, photo included

My hair is curly, just below shoulder length. I'd like to fasten it up, messy bun style, but don't like it pulled back out of my face, so would like to have a fringe. I have a sort of cowlick, so would need to be rough and quite long. I wear a side parting. I've no idea how to get a fringe right with my hair! Any ideas? Or wouldn't it work?

No photo, Op!

KittenPause · 05/01/2025 01:22

Honestly I'd not do a fringe with curly hair

Sorry forgot the photo!

I don’t think curly hair goes well with a fringe either. Sorry. Perhaps just pull the top part back into combs?

I don't like it pulled out of my face though.

Well, in that case, you have a problem! You don’t want a fringe, but you don’t want it pulled away from your face either? Maybe you should find a really good (preferably recommended) hairdresser and ask them for advice? I don’t really think we on here are in a position to advise you.

My DD has curly hair and a cowlick - fringes don't usually work with those . You could have some shorter layers around your face?

I do want a fringe, just not sure if it would work. Hence asking for advice here! I cut my hair myself or go twice a year for a trim (anything else isn't financially possible).

Yes I thought about that, just not sure how short would work.

My sis had hair like yours with a wispy fringe, but she straightened the fringe every day. It looked good, but she got fed up with the need to straighten eventually and grew it out.

LoafofSellotape · 05/01/2025 14:41

Really don't think it would work.

KilkennyCats · 05/01/2025 14:43

I’m think it would be disastrous with your hair type, op.

bakewellbride · 05/01/2025 14:46

"I do want a fringe, just not sure if it would work."

Kindly it won't work op. How about shorter or layers of something like that

BlackSheepThisYear · 05/01/2025 14:46

Also bear in mind it is tricky to cut your own fringe so you'd probably need to get it done at a hairdresser. I was then there every four weeks getting it trimmed. Time consuming, not forgetting the cost!

Daffyducklet · 05/01/2025 14:49

Thanks everyone. I guess not then!

I would say no fringe but perhaps look at how you can make your lovely curls work better.

Hi,
I've also got curly hair with a cow's lick... and a widow's peak.

If I'm wearing my hair up but don't want to slick it all back, I section off the first inch at the front, then updo the rest either in a loose bun, tight bun, pony etc.

I then create a side parting in the front section and let the curls fall to the sides. Not a fringe but it softens the front. (My curl is tight ringlets from root to end so they're not best suited to a fringe).

Does your curl spring up if it doesn't have the weight from the length? If so, you'd need to have consider how much it will curl up and how long the hair needs to be to fall at the desired length.

I go to a salon with a stylist who understands curly hair and who takes time to do a full consultation.
I'd highly recommended a professional cut if you really want a fringe (they will be honest in saying if your hair would suit this) or if you decide to frame your face with some shorter layers. You could still do your maintenance cuts yourself but a restyle is best left to a trained professional with expertise in curly hair.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

If you really want a fringe, go to a hairdresser and ask them how manageable it will be for your type of hair.

GetyourheadoutoftheovenIris · 05/01/2025 15:29

Not at all helpful but I am really jealous of your hair!

Have a look on Pinterest. I think that it could work but you would need to have complete faith in your hairdresser and it wouldn’t be as simple as chopping a fringe in straight hair.

My best mate has very curly hair and when wearing a messy bun she has a few loose tendrils (must have slightly shorter bits around her face) looks good.

Widow's peak, that's the description I was looking for!

My hair doesn't spring up much, no. I know it's not looking great at the moment, but I'm not well, been full of cold for weeks now, my hair seems to be in bad condition as well as me! It also needed washing in the photo, but it was the only close up photo I had 🫣

That looks good! My lengths are too long for that, so maybe just shorter around my face would work.

As a curly girl .... do not get a fringe

CharlotteCChapel · 05/01/2025 20:53

It depends on how your hair responds to a fringe. My hair is not as curly as yours but any attempt at a fringe ends up with a horizontal barrel roll. Hence no fringe now.
