Low buy/no-buy 2025

Pigtailsandall · 27/12/2024 11:34

Anyone up for a low-buy challenge for 2025? We had a no-buy/low-buy 2024 challenge and I found it helpful to check jn and read others' updates. I'm going to set some rules but essentially I'm not allowed more than 1 new item a month - so 12 items for the year, including shoes.

I've decluttered tons, and have 3 empty storage boxes in my loft now and I really don't want to fill them up again!

I’d love to do this. I even bought the book ‘How to Spending Money you don’t have on clothes you don’t wear’ by Jodie Gillary but it seems to be based around the idea that you curate your wardrobe into a narrowly defined style pallet and that doesn’t work for me.

I’m of the Trinny and Susannah old school which prioritises my colour and shape so if I see something that remotely looks like it may be flattering on my pale fat weird hourglass with added meno stomach I’m buying it!

…And then getting bored with. Or not knowing how to style it. Or nothing looks right for a certain event or occasion. Or I need shoes and a jacket that go with it etc.

I’ve been trying to get the capsule pieces too but omg - at my budget it’s all black black black. I feel like a middle aged goth. Help!

Ironfloor269 · 31/12/2024 11:41

I’m in. Most if not all of my 2024 purchases have been from Vinted but for 2025, I’m resolving not to buy anything unless to replace an existing item.

Also, I buy an item only if it can be worn in a minimum of 3 ways. If not, I put it back in the rack.

I like these rules and might pinch them!

henlake7 · 31/12/2024 13:07

well, technically I bought 3 new coats today....
dont think it counts though as it was one each for my little dogs!😆

SantaPawsiscomingtofrown · 31/12/2024 14:19

@henlake7 to be forgiven, you must post photos of said dogs 🤣🤣 well i have enough skincare to last the year (popped into boots to check out the sale) and also bought a reduced box of chocolates as a treat for tonight...but absolutely no more! I am aiming for the one new item for me / home decor / garden (not child or urgent house need) per month. I desperately need to replace my bras as i buy a pack of three each Jan and wear them to death! So think that is Jan sorted! When i run out of simething i need to use up the slightly less nice version that is taking up space and only then can i buy the item i love!

I would like to join in this thread again.
I sadly failed the last few months due to weight loss & new clothes. But now I have enough of everything. The only exceptions are Boody bras, underwear & a very occasional pair of Joya shoes. But those should & can be funded from my eBay sales.

So minimal expenditure until Easter is the plan. I'm actually tired of returning parcels. As our rural post office is invariably closed during standard posting hours.

squishyarms · 31/12/2024 15:14

I'm in. I'm moving and downsizing so need to get rid of a lot of stuff I've been clinging onto 'just in case'

I don't need anything apart from some new underwear.

If I lose a few pounds I have so much stuff in my wardrobe I love. So I don't really need anything.

Wakemeupwhen2024ends · 31/12/2024 15:23

I'm in

Mrsredlipstick · 31/12/2024 15:46

I'm in.
19 black bags donated this year. (i had 39 pairs of black trousers).

No clothes purchasing bar bras and pants in 2025.

AnotherFuckingUsername · 31/12/2024 16:39

I'm in too - never tried it before and sense I need to hold myself to account better. I don't need any clothes or beauty products - quite the opposite, I feel I need to declutter in order to see / wear better.

Setting myself a few rules:

  • Max 1 purchase every two months.
  • Keep a wish list in my phone notes and go back to this to understand the 'why' better.
  • Any new item must go with at least three existing others.
  • NO midlayers (wool is my weakness, as a look at my wardrobe would testify to).
  • NO jackets (see above).
  • NO bags (see above).
  • NO more beauty unless I've ran out of type.
  • Give self permission to throw opened beauty items that are between meh and yeuck where continuation of use would feel like punishment.
  • my Pelegrims subscription remains!
  • For every book read on Kindle read one of the physical books towering in the corner of my bedroom (then charity shop it).

Phew - here's to 2025!

i have ample wardrobe.
Taking to buying a lot 2nd hand but am still buying!
My mantra has.been “second hand first’ over last yr or so.
So 12 things over a yr… including 2nd hand!..I have the trip of a lifetime booked safari in Africa.. I have been looking things Safari colours.. light , no bright patterns, no black or navy .. should be able to do most wardrobe but will need a couple merino t shirts and green pants.. would manage all this out of my 12!

noobiedoobie · 01/01/2025 01:52

I joined upthread but have to confess I've been buying quite a lot recently. Mainly skincare. I often think it's only small but it adds up! I'm trying to buy natural products that aren't too pricey - the Yuka app is excellent as you can scan things in the supermarket and it tells you which are most natural. I've sorted my skin care routine now though.

I also bought a shirt and coat and trainers and a nude bra.

White trainers is an area where I feel its not very environmentally friendly. This is only the second pair I've bought of leather white trainers and they lasted three years of regular wear. Yet I've got a pair of coloured trainers that are 12 years old and still get worn.

Anyhow I'm posting for accountability. I made other purchases all of which need to be returned and then the purse is zipping shut until I get a job and the weather changes.

I have ADHD so it's very easy for me to forget clothes shopping exists if I don't actively look at websites.

Safari sounds amazing. I've been a long time ago. It's very dusty so green combats would be ideal. Some short and long sleeves for layering. A cosy jumper for evenings. Hat(s)
Can get chilly at night. Comfort is key- I remember the food was amazing but its breakfast lunch and dinner and then in a jeep all day, clothes were fitting snugger at the end.

Why no black or navy?

Ooh that is a very good tip about the three ways rule!

I was told in areas were tsetse fly is they are attracted to those colours? Although I am not sure if that includes SA, Botswana and Zimbabwe

Mrsredlipstick · 01/01/2025 08:09

Well I bought a coat yesterday off fleebay. I shall wait until it comes and sell the one it's replaced. I've lost nearly six stone so have changed shape.
I've also been working with a company that are a lot more casual in their dress. I'm C-suite so I'm normally very formal but mainly wfh now. I'm also mobility reduced so can't do heels. I collect mulberry bayswater but they are now too heavy. I can hardly carry them.

I have so many lovely items but I'm not going back to being bigger. They have to go!

Caterpillargirl23 · 01/01/2025 09:46

@henlake7
Writing down your purchases does help, you see how quickly it adds up in a month. I've been doing this for a few years now and bearing in mind I don't consider myself a spendthrift I still seem to spend more that I should.

PumpkinSpicedTea · 02/01/2025 09:30

Been uploading things to Vinted and have spotted a pair of trousers I don't need but want as a bargain. Proud I've not bought but it's so hard.

itsstillmehere · 02/01/2025 09:45

@IncessantNameChanger I see you say you have about 60 pairs of socks. I find this interesting as I started my clearout yesterday with my sock drawer. I was shocked to find I had maybe about 70-80 pairs of socks so most were eliminated. I was feeling bad but your post made me feel better 😂 bobbly ones are going in bin. There's a couple of pairs still in packaging going to charity shop. Several pairs that are way past their best - bin. How do we end up in this state? Do charity shops really want socks?

Funnywonder · 02/01/2025 10:09

I would love to hang around here if that's ok. I have put on a fair bit of weight and keep buying unstructured clothes so that I can remain in denial. I had a few items (proper bargains😆) in an online basket for a week or so, then suddenly decided that I wasn't going to buy anything new until I'd lost some weight. That will take at least a few months. And then there's the incentive of rediscovering perfectly decent clothes from a year or two ago.

Pigtailsandall · 02/01/2025 10:30

Re: socks, that's so funny. I had 70+ pairs of socks in 2020 when I started decluttering. I couldn't believe it. I have since bought a few trainer socks (needed) but I've steadily used up my ankle socks and welly socks, and this Christmas season I finally bought 2 new pairs of wool socks as my total dropped below 14. But it was astounding that I did over 4 years without new socks.

My sale purchases so far have been the said socks, 1 pair of undies and 2 blouses. I had "interesting" long-sleeve tops on my 2024 wish list. I tend to live in jumpers and t-shirts and wanted something just a touch fancier for lunches out, theatre trips, pub trips with friends etc.

To keep my total the same, I'll do a post-xmas clearout and donate/sell a few tops. I made just over £400 on Vinted last year which I'm thrilled about.

I bought a cardigan yesterday. So haven’t really started too well! It’s to go with two pairs of trousers. It’s one I have had in my basket a few times and kept thinking about. It’s dark blue and olive green stripes and will go with jeans and two pairs of olive green trousers I have. One winter one summer. I like the idea of making sure new things work with a few items.

Speaking of socks I definitely need to sort out my socks. Noticed that quite a few of mine are looking very threadbare so I’m going to sort through them and get rid of the threadbare ones and see where I am. I definitely don’t think I need any new ones though!

Wakemeupwhen2024ends · 02/01/2025 12:18

I've got a few pairs of shoes and boots I'm going to try and sell on Vinted. I've never sold on there before do I need to be aware of anything?

Is there a good way to sell books?
