When will you stop with 'fancy' skincare?

I currently use various day creams, night cream, serums, eye cream, vit c, retinol, SPF ... (not all at the same time). I was thinking about getting older and whether all that stuff would be necessary - no cream can help wrinkles at 80! I'm thinking eventually I would just use cleanser, moisturiser and SPF.

Do you plan to keep up a skincare routine forever, or when would be the time to scale back?

Skin cancer can still get you at 80

TimeForBedSaidZebadee · 26/12/2024 19:50

I'm 63 and still have quite an extensive skin care routine. No plans to stop any time soon as I really believe it works.

How will stopping using fancy skin care affect OPs chances of skin cancer?

I finally feel in my mid 30s that I've found a simple, manageable routine that works for me in terms of time and price (and makes a visible difference). 1) morning: Liz Earle cleanse and polish, vitamin A, -cheap- moisturiser and SPF, 2) Liz Earle cleanse and polish, tret, -cheap- moisturiser in the evening. Botox twice a year.

I don't do it religiously, often chin off on the weekend, but I have failed to find something that works for me for years, it's mostly the tret I think.

eklaljdj · 26/12/2024 20:00

Oh and yes plan to do for as long as I feel it makes a difference.

henlake7 · 26/12/2024 20:18

I never started on fancy skincare!
I use a basic cleanser twice a day then a vit c moisturiser am and a retinol one pm.
New year's resolution is to get organized with my SPF, I'm bad at remembering to put that on.

Wallacewhite · 26/12/2024 20:29

There's no reason an older person should bin off anything in your list, retinoids can be good for tackling age spots for example (though so can Vitamin C so arguably you might choose one or the other)

Crikey, you must use an SPF if you're using retinol!

I'm mid thirties and have mostly given up my expensive skincare routine. To be honest I haven't noticed a deterioration in my skin since stopping a couple of years ago. I used to have botox four times a year, used elemis products mainly too. Now I use natural oils, massage and always spf.

JC03745 · 26/12/2024 22:16

I'm mid 40's and have never had a fancy skin care!
I WFH and rarely wear make-up. Micellar gel to wash make-up off and a moisturiser a few times a week and that is it!

Hattysbackpack · 26/12/2024 22:18

I’m 40 and I wash my face with a supermarket face wash, nothing else. That’s the extent of my skincare regime. No wrinkles so far. Maybe I’ll get into it when I’m 80.

hattie43 · 26/12/2024 22:22

I have very sensitive skin and use Elemis , not uber fancy but I can't put any old face care on . I buy what my skin doesn't react to rather than the price of the products

CharlotteCChapel · 27/12/2024 09:31

My "fancy skincare" has mainly come from beauty boxes. I haven't found anything that I've thought is worth paying extra for.

There is a minimum that derms say is necessary. Morning SPF and evening cleanser to remove the sunscreen. Everything else is optional. I have dry skin so use a hyaluronic acid serum and either moisturiser or facial sunscreen in the morning . In the evening a makeup removing wipe, the same serum and tret followed by night cream. I'm 60 and only have a few wrinkles.

Mindyourfunkybusiness · 27/12/2024 09:35

I went to a dermatologist and have a plan in place and see her 2x a year or every 8 months now. Mostly because I use retinol but the strong prescription, I get a repeat prescription but I have to be seen here and there. My skincare went from loads of items to: spf, retinol, moisturiser and cleanser and recently she gave me a new eye cream to try with my setup. So 5 items. But they all compliment each other I'd assume 😂 so all the creams that cost an arm and leg are replaced with derm stuff which is okay price wise in comparison.

Collette78 · 27/12/2024 09:40

I didn’t have a skincare routine until I was 40+ but even now it’s not consistent. Sometimes Micellar water, occasionally toner and just a Boots night cream. I do have Botox twice a year though.
I can’t use retinol as it really aggravates my skin.

I think it’s an individual thing and you should do whatever feels right for you.

RampantIvy · 27/12/2024 09:41

I'm thinking eventually I would just use cleanser, moisturiser and SPF.

That's all I use anyway. I'm 66 and have very good skin. I rarely wear make up - just when going out or to the office. At home I like to let my skin breathe.

I'm not even brand loyal.

I genuinely don't believe most topical skincare works at all. Retinoids and acids work, other than that a good basic cleanser and moisturiser is enough. Then a high quality sunscreen. The rest is just marketing.

mnahmnah · 27/12/2024 10:05

DM is 76 and still uses all the serums, creams etc. she always gets complimented in her skin and people are shocked how old she is. Why give up on your appearance just because you are older?

Floisme · 27/12/2024 10:47

I've stuck to cleanse, moisturise and SPF for the last ten years or so, ever since an attempt to up my game backfired badly and left me highly suspicious of the entire skincare industry. I can't see that changing.
But I imagine in old age I might be looking for something richer and more soothing as I can already sense my skin getting drier and more papery.

Waterboatlass · 27/12/2024 10:50

I don't think there's any need to spend serious money these days but I notice a difference if I stop using my serums etc

Tubetrain · 27/12/2024 10:51

Never started. None of it is worth the money.

elozabet · 27/12/2024 11:47

Just use a fairly decent moisturiser that really suits my skin and an spf cream in the summer months as well. Just wash with water though buy I don't wear much make up.
I will probably continue with this pretty much forever.
However genetics has been good to me and my skin looks very good for my age

Same here - mid 50’s and only use a moisturiser with SPF and a cleanser. Less is best is my routine.

GuestSpeakers · 27/12/2024 13:15

I had to stop all the fancy stuff when I started using tretinoin for acne. Everything else made my skin irritated so I use eye makeup remover, a basic cleanser, moisturising serum and a basic moisturiser.

SweetRain · 27/12/2024 13:21

My skin barrier got damaged from trying too many fancy skin products so now I am forced to keep it simple.

I don't think it's an age, I think it's about your choice and circumstances whether to keep a complex expensive routine or not. There are benefits and enjoyment even if you are 100 if this is something you personally feel a benefit from.
