When will you stop with 'fancy' skincare?

I currently use various day creams, night cream, serums, eye cream, vit c, retinol, SPF ... (not all at the same time). I was thinking about getting older and whether all that stuff would be necessary - no cream can help wrinkles at 80! I'm thinking eventually I would just use cleanser, moisturiser and SPF.

Do you plan to keep up a skincare routine forever, or when would be the time to scale back?

It doesn't have to be 'fancy'. There are some brilliant affordable products out there. And a lot of old gentle and effective home made treatments.
I'll carry on with some form of complex skincare routine for as long as I can.
It's not just about what the products do (tretinoin and spf arguably the only ones that matter according to current advice). For me, it is just as much about the ritual of spending time on myself. I pay equal attention to body skincare as much as I do for my face.
I also take (waste?!) time on my haircare as long as I can for the foreseeable future.
Both my grandmothers had beauty/ self care routines to the end of their lives. They also, equally important, were always physically active, didn't consume alcohol, had healthy complete diets. It didn't do them any harm.

I use it because I enjoy it rather than firmly believing any claims to make me look 20 years younger.

I'd have to start first. Never used anything other than soap or a face scrubbing wash thing.

@Wallacewhite Every SPF gives me cystic acne, which is partly why I'm using tret. Mid 40s. It won't just clear up. I'll be buggered if I'm going to suffer even worse and more painful skin because of the marginally higher risk of sun damage.

Get yourself some nice facial cleansing oil or something. Makes a lovely treat

Nah, sounds more like a chore than a treat

Not really it's as easy to use as soap

I really can’t be bothered with fancy skincare. Basic cleanser, splash water, moisturise. Job done. Drinking lots of water makes the most significant difference. That and Botox. Botox is the best… look fresh and clear.

I've been washing my face and using oil of ulay beauty fluid forever, can't see that changing any time soon...

I'd still have to go to a shop, work out what it is and how you use it and it sounds greasy. So no ta!

I started using decent skincare about two years ago. I'm 64 and have always had good skin. I just sort of felt I needed to work a bit harder to keep it that way it isn't dry or oily and I've barely ever had a spot. For years I was a soap and water girl and then used No7 three in one wipes until they discontinued them.

Nowadays:

Clinique, clean the day balm
Estee day cream
Estee night cream
Advanced under eye cream

It has made my skin feel very soft and velvety.

My mother is 94 and still has the same skincare routine. I can't imagine her stopping. I only know this because on the odd occasion I stay overnight at her house, she has the same jars and bottles in her bathroom.

I think it depends on what you consider fancy! Good care can be had for bargain prices. I think as you get older your budget may be less if you are on a pension, but you can still find good cleanser, moisturizer and spf at the pharmacy.

fiddleleaffig · 27/12/2024 22:03

I'm 40 and I only cleanse and use a tinted moisturiser with spf. I'm always complemented on my skin although I'm aware that will change when peri-menopause arrives.
I do have bi-monthly facials though and intend on keeping those up for as long as the bank allows.

UmberMoose · 04/10/2025 15:00

I'm not 80 but I have seen my mom using a minimal routine. Morning:
Using water to wash your face,
Sebamed clear face gel,
la roche posay spf
Evening:
la roche posay moisturizer,
Tretinoin (0.1) from skinorac
Sebamed clear facial gel
