Bloody vanity sizing

Ducksarsehead · 26/12/2024 12:43

I got 3 items of clothing for Christmas and NONE of them fit.

Im a size 8 mostly

I got a really nice Tesco shirt dress in a size 6 I could fit a friend in it with me.

A Biba cardigan/dress in a XS, so huge my size 16/18 sister has taken it.

A Nike sweatshirt in XS, mahooosive, like I know oversized is in, but I looked like I was 6 and had wet myself and had to wear my dad's jumper home.

I ended up with some cool socks.

I know vanity sizing exists, I know I never order online from shops and only so carefully on vinted/ebay if the measurements are given.

But ffs, is noone allowed a bloody present anymore.

This carries on amongst all the sizes so noone can be getting the size they need. Infuriating!!!!

This annoys me all the time, but really fucked me off yesterday as I knew mine had been chosen carefully as I'm the one in the family who likes clothes and fashion, so the giver was more disappointed then me.

Presumably something that fits a size 16/18 is pretty obviously unsuitable for a size 8 whatever the label says?

Lots of things are oversized now it's just the fit I'm not sure you can blame it on the vanity of people larger than you.

TrueFashion · 26/12/2024 12:55

It’s annoying I agree. And cheap shops such as supermarkets and primark are always the worst for it.

Though I am intrigued how someone interested in fashion and clothes never orders from shops online! I love fashion and get q a lot of stuff online.

Ducksarsehead · 26/12/2024 13:00

I blame it on the shops, not the people
I believed that was well known. If its not I apologise.

I'm just frustrated that sizing is so ridiculous that out of 3 companies none of the items were wearable

It wasn't a case of oversized is in fashion....it was these items are making you look like a child wearing her fathers (albeit a dress and double fronted cardigan) clothes.

The items had been ordered online and were unopened before I got them so noone realised they were so big. They just assumed XS and size 6 would fit.

Edited

I never order online as I hate having to do returns and also I don't have enough spare cash to do a large order of hundreds of pounds to try on multiple items and return most of them for not fitting.

Luckily I live 6 miles from a large city so I can find most shops very close. I use ebay when I wanting to buy designer on my budget.

Don't think that's vanity sizing so much as shit sizing tbh

Vanity sizing is more the gradual increase so you needing a 6 in something when you used to wear an 8, not an XS fitting a size 16-18 person (XL)

BleachedJumper · 26/12/2024 13:08

Are you quite petite op? I am, and the ‘oversized’ styling is very much not suited.

Not really, I'm 5'5 and quite broad shouldered.
I do have minimal tits and no hips though. Classic inverted triangle.

I do agree I've got the title wrong....I just am so peeved I've got no nice new clothes to wear today....except my cool bright socks lol

Which I clearly acknowledge is a complete first world problem

Can you link to the Biba XS item that fits a size 16-18?

Ducksarsehead · 26/12/2024 13:48

This is it....no longer is stock as my sister is one of those weirdos (organised people) who shops from Feb to Nov.

Yes it is baggy but this was the fit on my sister.
On me it was absolutely huge.

I am so with you, OP.

I am so sick of shops that sell clothes allegedly in my size, but not one single thing that would fit me. I'm a size eight, but I'm not rake thin. I've got broad shoulders, big boobs, and wide hips. There's no way I should need a size four, ever, but apparently that's what I am in some shops. Not that they sell a four...

If they want to sell clothes that won't fit me, that's their prerogative. But I'd appreciate if they wouldn't pretend that they do.

wow, Im 5'5 and to fit into a size 6 Id have to be skeletal! I imagine you are probably daintier then you think you are!😉

I agree, though, some of the oversized stuff is just laughable. Im an 8/10 and recently sent a size 6 jacket to the charity shop coz it was enormous.
This is why if Im buying anything expensive on line I only get things that have a substantial amount of reviews, that way I know if I should size up or down.

Ghostedatchristmas · 26/12/2024 17:24

It will revert due to weight loss jabs.

kdramaqueen · 26/12/2024 17:25

I'm a size 12 and got a jumper in size M. Sleeve ends beyond my fingertips and I would say it's really an XL.

atlaz · 26/12/2024 17:29

I ordered jeans recently, I bought a size 4 and a 6 (American sizing) thinking the 4 might be a bit tighter than I'd like. Instead I've had to send both pairs back and exchange for a 2!! I'm slim but not dainty, God knows where the people who were a size 8 in the late 90s shop.

Gymbunny2025 · 27/12/2024 08:09

I would say I'm a true size 10 and 5'8. Which means I'm often in a size 6 these days. So I can understand how you being smaller than me in all dimensions would make oversized clothes appear huge on you!

TheOGCCL · 27/12/2024 11:05

I'm a 10 basically (we have quite similar sounding figures OP but I have a lot of bust), so at least I have scope to downsize. I always wonder where actual 6-8s are getting clothes, in the children's department?

I think it is partly vanity sizing, which is known to be a thing as you say, shops making people feel better as they can get into certain sizes. Not that that means anything anymore.

It's also the enshittification of clothes manufacturing. Oversized/non fitted means retailers can churn out this stuff without worrying about actual sizing. Even I could cut a hole in sheet and wear it as a poncho.

HangingOver · 27/12/2024 11:11

I do this 🫣 they're a lot cheaper.

2025Y · 27/12/2024 11:12

Absolutely agree with you.

And it def is vanity sizing. You read posts on here saying they're only a size 14 but in my head that means a size 20!!

I'm Gen X and recently had to buy a size 6!!! I mean what the fuck! I'm a 10 at least!

When I was young (in the 80's) I was a size 10 and size 8 was just that bit too small.

My perfect jean size was a 9 that Pepe's used to sell. Sigh .... those were the days.

I don't like to shop just want to grab my size and go. But none of the sizes are the same. It's madness.

TickingAlongNicely · 27/12/2024 11:17

I got a dress from an unfamiliar shop recently. They only got up to 16, with 18 in the odd style. I'm technically obese...

The 18 was far too big, the 16 maybe a tad too big? I honestly felt i could have managed into the 14.

Even in supermarkets i need a size 18.

LogicalImpossibility · 27/12/2024 11:19

I had to return a pair of joggers for 17yo dd as their XS (smallest size) was about 6 inches too long. It’s not easy to take up cuffed joggers, and this trendy teen brand doesn’t do child sizes.

She’s not even that tiny - there are plenty of women who are 5’3”, and slim with curves.

Oooh which brand please?

Hollietree · 27/12/2024 11:41

I’ve recently been wondering how really slim people find clothes to fit them. This year I have lost quite a bit of weight and now at the mid point of my healthy BMI (5ft8 and 10stone) and I’m now an XS or size 8 in most clothes I’m trying on. So a very slim person must be a size 4 xxs which most high street shops don’t stock as standard.

Urban Outfitters. Weirdly another pair in a slightly different style (no cuffs) were very oversized but wearable.

Gymbunny2025 · 27/12/2024 12:26

Thanks @LogicalImpossibility good to know for my daughter who is tall
