Bloody vanity sizing

I got 3 items of clothing for Christmas and NONE of them fit.

Im a size 8 mostly

I got a really nice Tesco shirt dress in a size 6 I could fit a friend in it with me.

A Biba cardigan/dress in a XS, so huge my size 16/18 sister has taken it.

A Nike sweatshirt in XS, mahooosive, like I know oversized is in, but I looked like I was 6 and had wet myself and had to wear my dad's jumper home.

I ended up with some cool socks.

I know vanity sizing exists, I know I never order online from shops and only so carefully on vinted/ebay if the measurements are given.

But ffs, is noone allowed a bloody present anymore.

This carries on amongst all the sizes so noone can be getting the size they need. Infuriating!!!!

This annoys me all the time, but really fucked me off yesterday as I knew mine had been chosen carefully as I'm the one in the family who likes clothes and fashion, so the giver was more disappointed then me.

If you're broad shouldered, I'm surprised you're fitting into a size 6 or XS women's anywhere. I'm broad shouldered and taller than you and what tends to fit me best for shoulders and length is a men's/unisex S or XS than any women's size.

More expensive clothing tends to be more true to size. But sizing depends on the brand and the body type they cut for in my experience.

I am petite but don't have much of a waist so know some brands fit me better than others.

I might be able to get my index finger into a size 6 dress🫢

Some of these size sixes are genuinely enormous. They're at least one or two sizes bigger than they should be.

This is my point. I shouldn't be too small for any of these clothes. By rights a size 6 dress should be too small. And yes with broad shoulders I do usually have to up a size.

But these were comical.

I did get a Joanie cardigan in an XS that is slightly baggy, which I don't think is meant to be the fit of it, but it looks OK. Last year I got a jumper from there XS which is a bit bigger than a Small jumper I got in 2021. The cardigan is bigger than both jumpers, but online is shown as fitted.

....yes usually more expensive brands will be better sized, but now this is even showing up at the top of high street.

I haven't got a large clothing budget, I do try to find designer/higher end a lot in charity shops and on ebay (if I can get the seller to provide measurements of the garment - as clothing labels as less than useless)

I'm 5'5" and 9st so really not that Petite.

It's nuts. I'm now a UK size 4 after being an 8 for most my life because vanity sizing is so extreme. And that's in Reiss, Hobbs etc not just online crap.

mdinbc · 27/12/2024 18:59

I'd make sure to put a review on their website. I recently bought two bras, same size from a company I've had before. The cup sizes were dramatically different, one fitting well and the other gaping. I returned the gaping one, and left a review stating the fact.

You see this is why I have to shop
on Shein. I’m a true 6-8 and their Xs and S depending on shape fit me perfectly
and midi is midi not maxi. I know it gets a lot of hate on here but I genuinely would not be able to dress if I didn’t have access to it.

All the high street stores have 6s like 10- 12sm. It’s impossible for truly slim and petite women to dress on the high street especially if mature.

willowstar · 29/12/2024 10:00

I am finding this too. Lost a lot of weight this year. I am 5th 4, and about 8st 4 and am the smallest size in many shops, yet I am really not that little. I have broad shoulders, hips. I too have wondered where really slim people shop.

BeardofHagrid · 29/12/2024 10:07

Yeah I can remember what size 6 and 8 were like in the 90s and 00s, in fact I still have some bits in my wardrobe. They were absolutely tiny! I can’t even describe how tiny, to the point that even when I was at my absolute smallest around age 15, I would struggle to get the jeans over one knee 🤣 It’s so different now, clearly made for bigger frames. That’s probably a good thing but it does make ordering things difficult.
