Please help me replace this lovely Christmas present

DB bought me a lovely jumper for Christmas but hadn't noticed that it contained wool, which I can't wear.
I'm really struggling to find anything like it though and shorter jumpers can look odd on me as I'm tall.
Budget up to £100. Must be wool-free.
I feel like I've tried everywhere but I can't have done surely. Any help really appreciated.

Well, I feared this would happen....hence no mention of veganism in my op but I replied to another question.

Thanks to those who have posted options and helpful replies, whether or not you agree with my choices. I am grateful. There are some lovely ones included and I now have a few potential replacements.

The worst thing you can do for the environment now (and therefore for animals) is buy another jumper just for the sake of it

Yes, it's not helping anyone to get rid of perfectly good, already made, already bought clothes to replace them with synthetic lookalikes.

Fair enough to not buy new ones, but putting preexisting clothes in the bin isn't on.

Vegans don't wear wool? That's news to me.

You know the sheep doesn't die, right?

And what sort of state do they imagine sheep would be in if they were never shorn?

ForGreyKoala · 27/12/2024 02:03

Microgal · 26/12/2024 12:34

Yes but sheep in the wild don’t need to be sheared they have their own natural way around this. We as humans have domesticated sheep in such a way that we shear them which then means they over produce wool and so we have to shear them, and so on goes the cycle.

I've seen a sheep which lived in the wild for some years and escaped being shorn. It wasn't a pretty sight, and must have been hell for the sheep.

You’re thinking of a domestic sheep, not the wild ancestors of sheep. Obviously the latter don’t need shorn, who would shear them?

The OP's jumper wasn't made from wild ancestors of sheep though. It was made from sheep which need shearing.

The point is vegans don’t agree with breeding sheep that need to be shorn (which research shows is a highly stressful process for them) and ultimately to go to slaughter as wool is a by product of the meat industry. I was quoting someone who misunderstood what was meant by wild sheep.

SheilaFentiman · 27/12/2024 08:46

Let’s assume that OP’s DH is going to return the jumper, not bin it, shall we?!

What can vegans wear then apart from pure cotton? No wool, silk, leather, presumably no polyester or other based for the environment products.

Cotton is problematic too. Cotton from China’s Xinjiang region, (produced by forced Uyghur labour) accounted for roughly 87% of China’s production and 23% of the global supply in 2020 and 2021. Countries including Vietnam, Cambodia and Bangladesh some of the world’s largest producers of cotton clothing and consumer goods still import large quantities of finished fabric from China.

Depends if your veganism is environmental or ethical. If it is environmental, not wear wool is insane Wool is natural, sustainable biodegradable and keeps you much warmer than cotton or synthetics (thus you need the heating on less). When I see "environmentally conscious" vegans wearing alternatives made made of low quality cotton or oil based polymers, I despair.

Ethics - well yes most sheep kept in this country end up as meat one way or another (any other option would be a waste and even worse IMO), so wearing wool is supporting that in a way.

Shearing isn't any more painful or stressful than hair cut is for humans and as people have said necessary for modern sheep, just a hair cuts and washing is for modern humans.

Even if it is ethical, ultimately we have to circle back to the environmental argument because all animals will be profoundly impacted by climate change

MrsGhastlyCrumb · 27/12/2024 09:35

I can't wear wool, but have a couple of jumpers I like enough to keep. I have high necked cotton tops to wear underneath. Could that work?

SheilaFentiman · 27/12/2024 09:36

OP is perfectly entitled not to want to wear animal products. This is a thread about a replacement jumper, not weighing up one set of ethics against another.

Additonally, the jumper is described as “containing wool” so will also (presumably) contain some of the other fibres posters are objecting to anyway!
