What do you 'swear by' in winter?

Just wondering if anybody else had certain things that they couldnt live without during winter?
Mine is from my old faithful Primark! I pretty much live in their long sleeved tops or fitted jumpers and velvet plush (the furry ones) leggings.

I love to wear skirts and dresses but have horrible varicose veins so can only get my legs right out in opaques and leggings which means winter for me is when all my mini and mid length items get out!
I use my Primark bits like thermals so I can still wear my summer dresses/skirts.
(although I have 14 pairs of the leggings at this point so maybe I have a problem!!LOL).

OP posts:

Ren Evercalm balm. My skin gets so dry and this is my saviour.

Ineedanewsofa · 22/12/2024 21:36

Long sleeve thermal baselayers from H&M, the fleecy leggings from primark as per the OP, choc brown faux suede bag from Amazon, various knits, cowboy boots, slip skirts from asos in various colours, brown faux suede primark skirt which looks a lot more expensive than it was and gets lots of nice comments

TinyPairsOfSocks · 22/12/2024 21:41

I also have thermal base layer for top and trousers, that I wear all the time. If I wear them to bed my family think I am a cat burgler and ask if I am going to the museum, which is fun.

When I go out I wear leggings over them and the then hiking overtrousers on top, so triple trousers.

This got rid of some physical problems that I had which were all put down to anxiety, so it really amused me that they turned out to be caused by cold legs.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 22/12/2024 21:42

Electric blanket, dual control as dh is much nesher than me. Decent socks, my emu boots (replacing my dead Ugg’s) Electric heat pad, on the sofa in the small of my back, warms me and the dog up, lovely.

Wordau · 22/12/2024 21:58

Another vote for heattech / heatgen (just don't tumble them)

Heated fleece throw

Long hot water bottle

Various beanie hats

Chunky long woollen socks

Lined mittens (I'm prone to reynauds and chill blains)

Thermal leggings when it's REALLY cold

My fave puffer coat

Insulated boots

Arket alpaca jumper

Rich moisturiser

Oil cleanser

Dyson hairdryer (because can't do wet hair in winter)

JMAngel1 · 23/12/2024 06:23

Aromatherapy Associates Deep Bath oil - absolute bliss after a hard day/freezing cold outside.
Weleda skin food rich - soooo moisturising and the herbal smell is just devine.
Thick long wrist warmers - I have them in so many different colours and I love how they make any outfit instantly look less formal.
Faux fur cropped jacket - makes any winter outfit more glam but also a little nonchalant.
Suede knee high ruched boots - I have so many colours and they go with everything.

nalgidu · 23/12/2024 07:42

I live in wool thermal tops from Arket or COS. Wear them under everything but also nice enough that I can wear them as a top eg. If out for dinner. Also wear thick wool socks all winter, I get them from a local market stall but they also sell on Etsy.

Find that both of these can be machine washed (and even tumble dried!) but as they are wool they also don't get smelly.

Rab gilet, it folds down into its own pocket so can easily stow in my bag if I get too warm. It solves the problem of visiting different homes and places and not knowing how hot or cold it's going to be. My MIL's house is much colder than ours but she thinks it's hot and I really need that extra layer.

yes but I don't drive so walk 30 mins each way to work. Plus peri has made me a bit more sweaty.

Have a look at Patra Silk thermals they are lovely and thin and as they are natural they are much more breathable. I've got various types, the original silk only and now some silk/bamboo I think which are a tad more robust. I've had some of the originals for 20 years so they are worth it. I chuck them in the machine on a low spin wash.

bryceQ · 23/12/2024 07:54

Uniqlo base layers. I wear them constantly.

Tallow for my face as it gets dry in the cold weather

Rosehip Oil to layer over moisturiser.
Aveeno hand cream.
Clinique lip balm tube.
Heated fleece blanket.
Olaplex bonding oil to combat the frizz.

catatonique · 05/01/2025 11:28

Heat tech socks
Uniqlo cashmere hats

Netcam · 05/01/2025 11:29

Dilling merino long sleeved tops and leggings as base layers.

I have some ancient Patra silk ones too, the black ones are faded and the cream ones are a bit grey after so many washes, but they are so robust they have not fallen apart or torn.

Arraminta · 05/01/2025 15:12

M&S long sleeved, thin thermal tops.
Ugg slippers
St Eval Nettle & Bergamot candles
Bobbi Brown Extreme Lip Tint Balm
Am giving my nails a break from BIAB, so rubbing in nail oil twice a day.

StanfreyPock · 05/01/2025 15:25

My knee-length alpaca socks that DH bought me for Christmas - genius buy that has earned him years of brownie points
Long cashmere cardigan for indoors
Electric blanket and brushed cotton sheets

I recently relined an old tweed coat with a quilted lining - super cosy for winter walks and worth all the work!

whatisforteamum · 05/01/2025 15:33

Long hot water bottle
Layers
Scarves I have several
My cheap sale puffer coat from next a couple of years ago
Very puffy with a hood perfect for waiting for the bus and the 3 miles journey walking in the wind or rain.
Hot black ☕

Newmeagain · 05/01/2025 15:45

Definitely Uniqlo heattech

I am currently wearing an ultra warm top under a jumper and heattech fleecy joggers. And my Ugg boot slippers.

NorthernSoul55 · 05/01/2025 17:33

Primark thermal leggings, though I only have 4 pairs(!) Haven't had them off apart from Christmas Day since late November.
Hush Puppies sheepskin boot slippers. They have a proper sole so don't come to any harm outside. My second pair of these.
Also Primark, a reversible knee length hooded body warmer. One of the best garments I've ever owned, it was pricy for Primark a couple of years ago.
Lands End down filled coat. I've had it years and it's a bit of a tight fit at the moment but is all the incentive I need to lose a few pounds.

Thingamebobwotsit · 05/01/2025 17:42

M&S thin thermals.
Wool socks for pottering round
A selection of wool jumpers - thick and thinner ones for layering
Long sleeved tops from M&S and Uniqlo
Gilet
Down coat
A good pair of wellies
Snow boots for very cold weather or if I am likely to be hanging around outside for a while
A good hat and scarf combo
Fleece lined leather gloves
For work days, tailored wool trousers and - if needed - wool based blazer.
For non work days I live in jeans or skirts with thick tights

I love dressing for winter because it is so easy. Good quality basics, lots of layers and no need to worry about having bits of you on display. You can also accessorise to your hearts content. So easy!!!

Back21970 · 05/01/2025 18:11

I need to visit Primark as so many recommendations on here - are they still not online?

I very rarely ‘shop’ now as WFH.

My winter go to is a chunky sole pair of long M&S rubber type boots I bought about 3 years ago - they are fantastic in the icy weather.

Polo neck, thermal vest, jeggings with thick tights underneath and my Superdry long puffa and Im good to go out in all weathers.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 05/01/2025 19:10

BodyShop Hemp handcream , it doesn't smell nice but it is so good on my dry skin. I had to search out my tube of it at the weekend .
I carry a tube of MoltonBrown cream in my bag as it;s lighter and smells delicious .

I use Prai Gold all year , in the colder weather I use the serum as a base

Clothes wise - I have M&S fleece lined leggings and some really nice Rieker boots ( lace up and Chelsea style ) I don't wear leather/suede/wool/silk . I've had the benefit of peri-menopausal inner furnace and now starting to feel the cold a bit .

Less glamorous I have a zip up leisure robe ( 2 in fact) that I can wear as a top layer . (indoors)
