New make up at 60?

justmadabouttheboy · 21/12/2024 11:16

I've had a difficult few years, so I'm feeling and looking tired...and I'm thinking that I'd like to freshen my look just a little. I've not worn make-up for years, so I'm wondering about what small things to introduce that'll help me look and feel better about myself...but I have no idea what to use! I keep reading about eyeliner (VB's in particular) or the benefits of a good foundation; whatever it is, it'll need to be light and easy-to-use, as I have a very busy life and am not even slightly high maintenance. I don't mind spending a bit on one or two key items, but I'm not about to buy or wear a full-face of make-up as that's just not me. It might not even be about make-up, it might be skin care...as you can see, I just don't know where to start!

Any recommendations gratefully received, thank you.

I’m 61 and I use either Boots No7 Hydraluminous or Lancome Teint Miracle. Both very light.

Skin care - I’ve used Neal’s Yard Frankincense Nourishing cream for years. Love it.

dreamingofsun · 21/12/2024 11:29

I binned my make-up recently as it was all so very old. i'm similar age to you. i went to a decent sized boots and the no7 counter. this very nice lady used a machine to decide my skin tone and then she suggested a load of stuff to me and showed me how to use it. i bought 50 of stuff - eyeshadow, mascara, foundation, stuff to make my eyebrows better and got some free blusher. download the boots app and the offers card they have. there are also some good videos online to give you tips. i had lipstick already.

now i'm practising how to use stuff. i really only wear if i'm going out somewhere decent....eg pub.

watching thread with interest. i decided to go fairly cheap to start but i may branch out over the next year. plus i know i need to bin stuff before it gets very old

iamnotalemon · 21/12/2024 11:30

A tinted moisturiser might be enough - it depends on your skin and the covering you want. I just use one from Rimmel. How about heading to a department store or boots and getting someone from the make up counter to help you. No 7 are always good

Runskiyoga · 21/12/2024 11:36

Trilogy Rose Oil makes my skin glow in a way that sometimes means I don't even put makeup on, even though I have been using makeup for years.
Personally I use Trinny London or Laura Geller Baked, with a bit of waterproof eyeliner and mascara and brow powder. And lip balm. But I think that would be more than you need or want. Buy a recommended high quality product rather than buy twice. Consider things like is it waterproof, will it stay put. Can I apply it with fingers or do I need a brush.

Dancetildawn · 21/12/2024 11:39

Was just coming on to say tinted moisturiser or tinted sun cream (I use Supergoop)

Erborian cc cream is amazing for days where I want a bit more coverage

Also add tanning drops to your moisturiser to give a little colour/healthy look so foundation isn't needed.

If you have fair eyebrows, get them tinted or tattood/nanobladed- decent brows make a world of difference

I use all of the above-don't like and no longer suit heavier makeup at 55; tend to add eyeliner (grey) and lipstick (various) to feel put together

RosesAndHellebores · 21/12/2024 11:43

I'm 64 and the following takes me about 3 minutes to apply everyday.

Light foundation (well matched - I like clinique)
Under eye concealer (I have circles - No7)
Blusher (clinique chubby stick)
Highlighter above blusher (No 7 in a tube)
Translucent powder (No7)
Mascara (Lancome Hypnose)
Lipstick - fairly neutral

It improves rather than looks like a full face if make-up. Written down it looks a lot but really isn't.

I take it off every night with Clinique take off the day and use Estee night cream and under eye cream. Estee day cream in the morning.

It's my little luxury.

Normallynumb · 21/12/2024 11:52

I'm 60 on New Year's Eve!
I use Maybelline 4 in one Perfector is more than a concealer but less than a foundation
You can build for as much coverage as you need.
Really good for around £12
I don't risk mascara because I have lens implants, but use eyebrow pomade.
I find my skin is paler now so I love a cool dark Fuschia lipstick
Clinique punch pop is my favourite since Mac discontinued a similar shade in their range.
Elf products are very good for the price too.

Edited

I don’t use it now but have used Neals Yard Frankincense moisturiser in the past and their Rose Oil (not tried the Trilogy version). They’re both lovely as they moisturise a lot.

I currently use Bourjois healthy mix foundation and Dior Hologlam blush plus tight lining under top lash line. And a tubing or waterproof mascara. And Rimmel Match perfection concealer and a nude eyeliner. I’m 53.

Normallynumb · 21/12/2024 11:54

Moisturiser wise I use Aveeno night cream with retinol serum/ hyaluronic acid serum.
I find less is more.

Good tip about the eyebrows. I had mine micro bladed - best money I've ever spent and I'm a bit tight 😂 I previously had super thin over plucked wonky eyebrows (thank you 90's style). Also had eyeliner tattooed.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 21/12/2024 13:24

Ooh, I'm not quite there yet but there was a segment on this morning yesterday about make up for 'older' skin. It was lighter and more glowy and looked fab.

OvaHere · 21/12/2024 13:45

Jones Road (Bobbi Brown) tinted balm is supposed to be good for mature skin. I've not tried it but a lot of people seem to like it.

I also love Maybelline 4 in 1, it's just right for me for daytime. If I want more coverage I use L'Oreal True Match Tinted Serum Foundation

CinnamonJellyBeans · 21/12/2024 15:02

Tinted moisturiser or a very light foundation (I love revolution super-dewy: very tube, lots of shades, light coverage) and miracle balm for a wash of check colour.

Clinique chubby sticks or similar for translucent lip colour

Mascara and maybe eyeliner

I keep seeing Laura Geller Baked on instagram would you recommend it? It seems to have mixed reviews on Trustpilot but they have a good introductory offer at the moment,

BestIsWest · 21/12/2024 16:40

I fell for the Laura Geller hype and I’m not impressed. It’s very powdery and drying on my skin. The brushes are great though.

ELF is very good value. I’ve had a few things and loved them - the cream blusher and the eye brow kit especially.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 21/12/2024 17:40

It's a big "no" to the Laura Geller.

It's just brown (or for me, orange) powder. The brush was cheap and tinny. I could get better from £land.

Sussurations · 21/12/2024 17:50

Im younger, but I recommend getting your colours done. I had it done online for £80 and the makeup colour guidance is spot on. I love Pixi’s bronzer and blush sticks they are amazing quality for the price and so easy to use.

Agree about eyebrows - they make an enormous difference.

HelloDaisy · 21/12/2024 17:57

I’m 56 and use
RockRoseBeauty facial serum. Feels amazing on my face
Nivea moisturiser
Laura Mercier eye shadow stick
mascara
and an eyebrow pencil as my eyebrows are disappearing..

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 21/12/2024 18:12

Clarins tinted moisturiser
Lipstick
Mascara (hard to get a decent one!)

Use them and review after a couple of months

Doggymummar · 21/12/2024 18:15

55 and I binned all my makeup recently and replaced with Elf. It works great on older crepy skin. I follow a lady on Instagram who is the same age, although she has had a facelift. I'll try and find you a link.

I’m curious. Why no mascara because of lens implants?

Normallynumb · 21/12/2024 18:55

I'm probably over cautious because I don't want to risk a mascara flake in my eyes
I find it really difficult to apply as well

I just wondered as I too have lens implants but always wear mascara. I’ve never had a problem with it. 🙂

I’ve been aiming for a minimalist approach to make up the last couple of years and most days after skin care I use normally just three products. First I apply Saie Glowy Super Gel which is amazing and gives you a lovely glowy look. I then apply Lisa Eldridge Skin Tint which is a beautiful product and gives me a really even look. Finally I apply some Chanel Lip and Cheek Balm for a nice hint of colour on cheeks and lip.
