‘Fancy’ every day bag

ThatTealViewer · 11/12/2024 16:29

I have a massive leather shoulder bag that I bought in some random market a decade ago. It’s on its last legs and I’d like an upgrade. I think I’m finally grown up enough to deserve a nice everyday bag. 🤣

  • Needs to be massive
  • Ideally leather
  • Suitable for daily use
  • Reasonably smart but still relaxed (I am aware this possibly doesn’t make sense, but it’s what I want 😊)
  • I’m thinking about £2k?

Any suggestions, please?

For many brands I would agree although I do think that there are many £800-£1,000 bags worth buying. But for brands like Gucci, YSL, Dior & especially Prada they are really not worth the premium.

But Bottega Veneta & Loewe are different. The craftmanship in their handmade bags and the quality of leather used are worth every penny if you can afford it. Mulberry are not of that calibre, but for their price point they too are worth the money.

Hermes would be worth it if they were similarly priced to Loewe & Bottega. Their bags are exceptional, but not in my opinion worth the price.

Thank you.

I think it’s going to be the Loewe Flamenco. It’s pretty spot on. Thanks @AprilLady!

Nowhere near the £2k budget but I really love this demellierlondon.com/products/the-new-york-mocha-suede-mocha-smooth?variant=44038058049710

Comefromaway · 12/12/2024 12:28

I loved the look of Demellier bags on line but when I actually looked at some in person I didn't think they looked particularly well made. For the price point they are fine but I think I got better value for my Mulberry bag which was in the sale (I paid £800 for it.

sausagesforteaagain · 12/12/2024 12:29

I like the mulberry bags but they are so heavy even when empty.

Thanks OP, I'm up against a deadline at work and this has been the perfect way to procrastinate!

The Loewe Flamenco is a gorgeous bag, but it looks small, and if you're needing to cart half as much as stuff around with you as I am, I know a clutch won't work in case I need my hands free, especially with kids in tow and takeaway coffees!

I know people love or hate them but my LV Neverful and it's perfect for every day. The name is true - it's never full, even with work stuff, kids stuff, pet stuff all thrown in. I've used it every single day for 6 years and it looks as good as new (unless you look inside, that is...) - I went for the lighter shade rather than the black/brown, and I'm really glad.

When I need to take my work stuff out and about with me, I have an Aspinal London Tote in a gorgeous colour which gets comments ALL the time, I love it. This fits my laptop, iPad, notebooks galore, spare keyboard and so on, plus cables, and it's brilliant, but it's definitely a formal bag (and this gorgeous colour is reduced from £695 to £347)
https://www.aspinaloflondon.com/products/london-tote-in-cornflower-blue-pebble

For me, the ideal is to have a formal work bag and also something for non-work stuff, so maybe you don't need one fancy bag, but two slightly cheaper ones? I love teaming a more structured work bag with a slouchy leather hobo style, like these:

How exciting OP! I’m sure you will love it, they are buttery soft.

If anyone wants a non leather alternative I’ll chuck in my 2 cents - I love my Stella McCartney Falabella. I throw everything into it and it washes easily with fairy liquid and a cloth. It’s definitely every day bag that I can beat up a little and not worry about.

I also love my YSL Bea leather tote and always get compliments on it.

The Chloe spin leather tote is another that comes to mind. Lovely gold accents and very sturdy.

@ThatTealViewer I adore my Loewe Flamenco which I think ticks your boxes. It has beautiful leather, relaxed but smart. The medium is pretty big, the large even bigger:

That is a seriously beautiful bag. But I couldn't justify spending that much on a bag.

But, I might get one of these Aspinal bags as well. Excellent sale prices!

I have the Loewe Flamenco in small from about 2 years ago. They've updated the design a bit since then. I find that the drawstring doesn't really keep the bag closed - not a deal breaker, but to be aware. Also, they now also do the wider strap to wear it as a crossbody, and given what you usually carry I think you'll need it, as the thin strap it comes with won't really take that kind of weight.

By the way, I love my Flamenco - the leather is superb and it's beautifully made.

Having said that, I've decided that my days of buying super expensive brands are over as they've hiked up these prices too much in the last 12 months. I've started searching out the smaller brands looking for beautiful leather, colours and style. Haven't bought anything yet, but I'm enjoying the research process........!

How about https://www.elvisandkresse.com/collections/tote-bags

These are more like £250 than £2500 but made with recycled fire hose, printing blankets, and some are made with designer leather offcuts. I think they can try to accommodate bespoke as well. And a percentage of their profits goes to support retired firefighters.

You could get a whole range of different shaped and sized bags for your £2k budget!

What about a ferragamo hug bag or the Coach empire 40?

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 12/12/2024 20:36

I love Loewe bags - one day one day I’ll have one!

DancingNotDrowning · 12/12/2024 20:47

I have the JW Anderson and it’s a good size for a laptop and bits, the leather is also pretty rigid so no pointy corners sticking out of suple leather.

the Loewe is gorgeous but not robust enough for a laptop and notebooks in my view.

I’m still hunting for the perfect big tote, the Celine cabas was perfect and I’m still distraught it was discontinued. I think the acne musubi is my next try - going to see if they introduce more colours (I’ve posted all this before. Can’t believe it’s so difficult to find what I’m after!)

I hate to say it but I got the medium flamenco in September. It is gorgeous but doesn't hold much, the stitching is already coming undone on the handle, and has no feet so can see the edges scuffing already.

I switch out bags most days so it's not even had heavy use (if I'm in the office I use something bigger)

I don't have that sort of money but the green one in the first link looks beautiful!
