Boots. Lanx, blundstone or solovair

I am getting new boots for Xmas. Its a big purchase for me as limited funds for clothing/footwear. I love a chunky boot and often wear with dresses/skirts and tights so don't want too workman like
I typically wear a doc type with laces but love Ashley Jensens boots in the first Shetland. I think they were blundstone and a chunky Chelsea boot
I think docs quality is poor now

Are they everyday boots?
Lanx are narrower across the foot
Blundstones break in easily
I've tried solovair but found stiff so didn't buy.
But I've got really 'needy' feet think princess and the pea level !

WeAreOnTheRoadToNowhere · 08/12/2024 22:13

I can get foot problems and find getting a good fit difficult although docs are usually OK. More wide than narrow and take a half size

I love blundstones , there are more designs than the regular chelsea/ pull on boot. I had a lovely lace up pair.
Toast carry both solovair & blundstones ( I believe) so you could try on if you have a store near to you.
I'm not the smartest dresser though! I'm very simple practical ( not jazzy or fussy) very 'normcore'

I’d wait for the Grenson sale in the new year, when the prices go down to the same level as the three you’re looking at. (Unless you’ve already considered and dismissed them as not quite your style?) Very good looking and, in my experience, pretty much indestructible. (Some experimentation with sizes may be necessary, even if you follow all the guidance on different lasts.)

Nothing wrong with the brands you’ve mentioned, of course.

Wheelyfast · 08/12/2024 23:31

I love Grenson boots but they don't like me (sadly) they are beautiful I've tried several pairs and always notice them on other people.

GreyBlackBay · 08/12/2024 23:41

I like solovair, basically DMs back when they were better made.

I have bought factory seconds from their outlet store a couple of times. Tiny scratch on one and I couldn't find an issue with the other pair. Worth a look, limited sizes but updated regularly. It was either free or cheap to return otherwise I wouldn't have risked it.

I had that problem with Crockett & Jones, @Wheelyfast. Fell in love with them online, but when I went into a shop to try them on they all just looked disappointing on my feet, and the shoes gaped. It was very sad.Grin

Wheelyfast · 08/12/2024 23:45

@MistletoeRegrets I don't know that brand..... Off to google
I can appreciate them but too pointed for me, and my feet would look wrong when I looked down (that's normal , right?!)

WeAreOnTheRoadToNowhere · 09/12/2024 06:26

I'm the same as the above poster, I don't like a pointy shape. Much prefer a rounded or more square toe

I'm a new recruit to blundstones and they're super comfortable compared to docs and grensons - which I find too narrow. They're actually really lightweight. I have the regular Chelsea boots but with yellow elastic. Recommend trying them on if you can - I went down a size.

Fadeintoyou · 09/12/2024 06:39

Blundstones are fabulous, I'm on my feet every day wearing them and my feet never ache since I've been wearing them, I also walk miles with the dog in them. The soles show no signs of wearing out and I've had them 3 years.

Iheartmysmart · 09/12/2024 08:44

I’ve got the Solovair dealer boots in brown leather and they are really comfortable. Even my pathetic, prone to blisters, and slightly wide feet haven’t complained.

WeAreOnTheRoadToNowhere · 09/12/2024 09:03

I live close enough to the Lanx shop to visit so they are probably worth trying
I have loved the blundstone though since I saw Ashley Jensen wear them, or similar, in Shetland. Has everyone found a need size up in blundstone?
Their info is interesting, half sizes for a wider foot which would probably suit me

Are you aware, you can buy blundstone on Amazon? ( it's a "work" boot firstly) they do get random offers so its worth checking

Tropicalsunshine · 09/12/2024 10:17

I think the 'shetland' boots were something else. Someone on mumsnet tracked them down on a previous thread. If you do some sleuthing you might find it.

ThatAgileCoralBird · 09/12/2024 10:21

I had to return my lanx boots as they were just so uncomfortable;
Far too narrow but long and leather very hard.

last month I bought a pair of dr martens and they are fabulous;
soft leather and I can wear thick socks.

ThatAgileCoralBird · 09/12/2024 10:24

The longest hardwearing boots I’ve had is my redback boots; super comfortable.
They still going strong after more than a decade (but now used for working outside) and I was wearing them everyday at one point.

Wheelyfast · 09/12/2024 10:24

@Tropicalsunshine didn't someone join the chat who worked on the styling for Shetland ?

NormalAuntFanny · 09/12/2024 10:43

I really only wear Chelsea boots and really wanted to like solvair but found them a bit unsupportive and shapeless compared to blundies which I have several pairs of. They are loads better made than DMs though.

Blundies do size a bit large for me but are nice and wide too.

welshweasel · 09/12/2024 11:36

I love my lanx boots, have had them 2 years and they are so comfy. I have the whalley style, and have wide feet.

Thanks, found it. They are Russell and Bromley and are £275 but out of stock in my size anyway
They look beautiful but I'm back to thinking Lanx or Blundstone
My usual style is laces and I wear with cord skirts or dresses. Could I get away with the chunky Chelsea boots with skirts or dresses?

Boots skirts dress is a great look , could you buy both & compare ( big layout initially) but check the small print returns and take photos just for extra proof in case any issues arise.
