Christmas drinks outfit ideas?

Meeting up with some of my DP’s family for Christmas drinks in Windsor. I’ve never been to Windsor and I’m imagining it to be generally a bit classier than my local country pub where I can turn up plastered in mud and no one bats an eyelid. No idea where exactly we’ll be going, various bars I’d imagine.

I haven’t been out for years unless it’s something super dressy like a wedding, so I don’t have anything suitable for this occasion. I’m thinking classy but not too over the top.

Please hit me with outfit ideas, I have no idea what people wear going out these days. I’m 43, size 10, 5’8”, not blessed in the boob department, decent legs. I don’t have time to go shopping anywhere before the day so looking to order something online. Also need footwear!

Please and thank you.

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle thank you, surely it’s basic comprehension!

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 08/12/2024 12:29

Thanks but I wasn't actually agreeing with you re the reason for not suggesting barrel leg jeans. You suggested it was because she thinks her legs are one of her best features- I think it would be lack of confidence.

Colourblinds · 08/12/2024 12:31

Im talking about confidence!!! If you think your legs are your better feature you are not going to have the confidence to chose a trouser shape like a barrel leg.

Colourblinds · 08/12/2024 12:32

The OP doesn’t come across as fashion confident.

Colourblinds · 08/12/2024 12:33

And strikes me as someone who wants to stick to shapes and styles they feel comfortable in.

Yes I agree, she doesn't come across as fashion confident.

I think you and Flo are talking at cross purposes to get to the same conclusion. I don't get the "dress to show your best feature" thing. My best feature is I'm not dead.

Colourblinds · 08/12/2024 12:36

I don’t dress to particularly highlight my best features or hide my worst ones so I’m comfortable in different silhouettes. Many people aren’t though & stick to a similar silhouette for decades.

haplessharpy · 08/12/2024 12:36

There's some right patronising twats on this thread.

Colourblinds · 08/12/2024 12:38

Me neither but I think many people do feel more confident when they dress in this manner.

@Colourblinds
This brand is new to me but if you like that ASOS trouser suit you posted you might like this.

The red cabbages & roses dress is gorgeous.
If you are more of a trouser person then I second velvet trousers. Even better a velvet suit. Have a look in M & S. coupled with a silk blouse or thin jumper. Windsor is a nice place btw.

Colourblinds · 08/12/2024 12:19

@Floisme so despite me linking a trouser in my first response and asking the OP if she preferred trousers or dresses you have inferred my response to the suggestion of barrel leg jeans that I think she should get her legs out all of the time! 😆

The OP is clearly not confident in what to wear in this instance so I don’t think it’s a reach to assume she will not be comfortable in barrel leg jeans. You don’t need to take it so personally!

Edited

The OP is clearly not confident in what to wear in this instance so I don’t think it’s a reach to assume she will not be comfortable in barrel leg jeans.

I agree with you on the first point (about confidence) as the op wouldn't have posted otherwise. But as I read it, she was basically asking people to tell her what they wear at the moment to this kind of night out, as opposed to seeking styling advice.

Barrel leg jeans are a popular style at M&S so hardly a fashion hardcore suggestion. They're not to everyone's taste and you might be right that she'd say, 'no way!'. Or alternatively she might have thought, 'Hmm, several posters have suggested this so maybe I'll take a look'.

Which brings me to the second half of your point and your assumption that she wouldn't be comfortable. I didn't think there was any need to 'assume' anything, hence my response which, I will concede, was a little testy so my apologies.

I hope this clears things up but, if it doesn't, I won't be responding again as I don't want to derail the thread any further.

WolfFleece · 08/12/2024 13:59

This has escalated 🤣. To settle the score on the barrel leg jeans, I was slightly unclear on what kind of cut that was, and having googled I don’t think it’s something I’d wear. I do have these jeans from Mint Velvet but they don’t strike me as very festive or going-outy. I usually wear them with a jumper and trainers.

In the past I have always equated going out with wearing a dress, so I guess that’s my comfort zone. Footwear wise I think I’d rather wear boots than any kind of strappy heels, then my manky trotters are one less thing to think about.

OP , do you never do things like going to a restaurant on your birthday or your husband's birthday? Friends' "Big 0" parties?

You could wear those jeans to go out if you wanted and other than afternoon tea at the Ritz, you won't get turned away, but they're very everyday clothes. You could put the bins out and do a supermarket run in them too.

WolfFleece · 08/12/2024 14:34

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle no, I’m very antisocial 🤣. Most of my friends (and my) 40th birthday were over the Covid era so there basically were no celebrations. DP is just as antisocial, he works away doing 12 hour days all week, so at the weekends he just wants to chill, and I compete in a sport most weekends which quite often involves early starts on Sundays, so I get an early night the night before. I was fairly sociable before Covid but now I just can’t really be arsed. If me and DP do go out to eat it tends to just be somewhere local where I can wear something very casual.

I just dug out the dress that the Debenhams one reminded me off and it fits well, so it’s good to have that as a back up option in case I order something and hate it. The dots are gold and sparkly which is hard to tell from the photo, so it looks kind of Christmassy. I think I’ve had it about 8 years so it’s not exactly up to date.

Satin midi skirt, sparkly top or cashmere jumper and long boots. That would be what I'd go for.

Colourblinds · 08/12/2024 14:47

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle thanks, will take a look

It was a long time till we got to the above but apology accepted 😉

EraOfTheGrey · 08/12/2024 15:09

If you are planning on having drinks in the centre of Windsor then I would skip the heels. It is quite steep if you are drinking in the pubs around the castle and in some places there are cobbles.

I love Xmas glitz and comfort so I’d be wearing black jeans, ankle boots and a sequinned bomber jacket over a well fitting black t-shirt!

I am the same, this is the one time of year I can walk into nearly any shop and I get excited with all the sparkles.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 08/12/2024 16:42

Any of these Oliver Bonas tops would work with your jeans but I prefer black ones for going out. OB also do nice sparkly knits too:-

OP do you want to wear something Christmasy and sparkly? It's not obligatory.
