How often do you treat yourself?

I typically buy a couple of things a months in clothes, spendy items like footwear and coats about once every three month. Do not really buy costume jewellery. Accessories usually ask for birthdays / Christmas. Make up - rarely, when run out or if I fancy something may be a couple of times a year. Skincare / hair care - buy a lot, at least one item per week. Haircut (pixie) every 4 weeks, scale and polish twice a year. Do my own nails.

Every time I get paid. It's my money and life is short.

whatisforteamum · 05/12/2024 22:18

Clothes a few bits a month...much better since lockdown.
No pj obsession.🤣
Make up and hair colour box dyes every few months 3 for 2.
Own haircut.
Shoes,boots as required.

Ggmores · 05/12/2024 22:20

Whenever I fancy it!

mynameiscalypso · 05/12/2024 22:22

I don't really see it as treating myself or have a schedule for it...I just buy stuff when I want it. I can go ages without buying something and then I'll treat myself to a ridiculous but beautiful coat or something like that.

Doggymummar · 05/12/2024 22:27

I had my first haircut this year today £30 cut and blow dry with salon junior. Nails 50 a month, 50 a month extensions maintenance, £300 every 5 years facial fillers. Unfortunately £3000 on dentistry this year. Clothes are from Vinted mostly.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 05/12/2024 22:38

So I've recently lost a lot of weight and assigned a decent chunk of money to building a new wardrobe from scratch. Currently I'm buying a couple of big ticket items (£100+) and lots of vinted/high street pieces every month, but this should settle down in the new year and go back to 1 or 2 things a month.

Haircut every 6 months, if that. I do my own nails, but buy a few new Essie polishes every 3 months or so. Probably £40/50 a month on makeup, skincare and toiletries as a Boots haul.

No eyelashes/brows/fillers etc.

Littleguggi · 05/12/2024 22:39

All the time, not in excess though. Only if I really need something or I've fallen in love with something that I know I'll regret if I don't buy in years to come. Recently I have splurged on high end items like knitwear. I love makeup so buy it regularly. I don't go to salons or anything. I cut my own hair.

HeartOfChocolate · 05/12/2024 22:43

I am glad to hear there are similar spending patterns. Sometimes, I wonder if I am overindulging but at the same time I choose wisely and use everything, so should not feel guilty about it. As PP said, life is short.

I love spending money and don't feel guilty as I know I worked hard to earn it, I agree that life is short!

CatamaranViper · 05/12/2024 22:54

Stuff wise - hardly ever. I do my own hair, I get makeup for Xmas, most of which lasts me a year, clothes only when something wears out.

Food and drink wise - all the bloody time (or whenever I can afford it). After payday I get all the treats mainly to last the month, I buy the nicer stuff, go out to dinner, DH is an amazing chef so buy nicer ingredients, buy nice wines and beers, invite friends round to eat all the nice foods. I make it sound like we have Tudor banquets every night, it's not quite that grand, more like buying the branded or 'dulux' versions of things instead of the unbranded stuff. DH will also experiment with different ingredients or methods when we have a bit more cash to spend.

Neither of us are that into stuff, but definitely into foooooood

StarDolphins · 05/12/2024 23:00

I’m very frugal yet very generous to myself! I love scouring Vinted for cheap but good clothes, underwear is the only thing I buy new. My friend does my hair in her salon & only charges for the product, not her time so v cheap. I have no beauty treatments of any kind. I wear minimal make up.

However, I really love expensive perfume so I keep myself topped up with this & it’s usually £150 so I see these as my main treats. If I want a beauty advent, I get one. I also spend a lot on hair products. Olaplex, Oribe Gold etc as I have really horrid hair.

Edited to add…Food & drink, I don’t scrimp on, Waitrose, organic & M&S. but I waste nothing.

Tarnishedbutton · 05/12/2024 23:32

I am 'treating' myself to Mounjaro weight loss injections (not interested in a debate, I have my reasons!) £200 a month.

But in general I would say I treat myself a couple of times a month rarely to expensive items.

Might once or twice a year splurge on the coach website or something and split it for a couple of months.

Recently brought myself the more expensive glasses of two I was looking at.

Femme2804 · 05/12/2024 23:42

almost everyday 😅 i knew i had to stop shopping but everytime i scroll someting there is must be something that i like. There is no week goes by without me buying something for myself

LigamentBandy · 06/12/2024 00:03

When something catches my eye .
My clothes are simple but I like accessories and adore my handbag & accessories room, though it's starting to creep into the back bedroom too :)
Hair is growing out a style
I'm the last month roughly, I've bought two pairs new glasses, new (nice) shampoo & skincare , vintage mulberry bag four other bags , new coat ( outdoor oodie not stylish but it fills a role) a silk scarf, a cashmere beanie and probably a few things over forgotten
But I did take 3/4 of my wardrobe to a charity shop

SleepPrettyDarling · 06/12/2024 00:06

I’m trying and failing to not be ‘cos I’m worth it’ as I’m terribly wanty when I get paid. I’ve a wardrobe stuffed with clothes, and I’m easily tempted. I buy myself something every month, and I really don’t need to.

Foxlover46 · 06/12/2024 00:09

Definitely not enough and it's these threads that have woken me up to that !
I do buy bits and bobs off of Vinted but as I work outside I rarely get to wear "nice clothes " even at the weekends I am with the horses so I'm still wearing outdoor work style clothes , I remember when I used to dress up in nice clothes every day.
Box dye hair , I do buy my Clinique skin care and have make up buys here and there but have decided from new year I'm going to go and get my gel nails done and invest in extensions rather than my clip ins I barely bother with now.
Thinking of Botox as I'm looking quite haggered these days too

Ruthietuthie · 06/12/2024 00:10

I assess my wardrobe at the beginning of the season (so spring/summer and autumn/winter) and list what I am missing/what I would like, then I buy what I need then. I sometimes buy it myself, sometimes have a stylist pick things out for me in those categories (then I meet them in the city and they have everything ready for me to try on). I rarely buy things in between, but will if I see something I really like (and that fits with what I already have). My stylist also sometimes sends me photographs of things that she has seen that she thinks I would like.
Make up and other toiletries, I buy when I run out. Hair I go every eight weeks or so.
I don't really see these things are treats, just things that I need to have appropriate clothes to wear for work etc., and to look put-together. I am also REALLY picky. If it isn't the perfect version of something, I send it back. (One of my checks for this is if I want to wear it immediately. If I don't want to wear it that day, it means I don't absolutely love it and I send it back).

Superwomann · 06/12/2024 07:02

I’m trying not to be such a big part of the “consumer society.” It’s all a game to make us think that having more things make us happier.. It’s hard though when everything around us encourage consumerism. I don’t think buying things makes me happier but I still buy too much, treat myself to beauty treatments and envy people with expensive clothes/ items.. Ahhh

To be nosy, how much do you pay for a stylist?

HeartOfChocolate · 06/12/2024 07:27

Thank you all for sharing! I have so many question as!

@CatamaranViper what are you and DH having for Christmas? We need some inspiration after 20 years of prawn cocktail and turkey

@StarDolphins would love to know about your perfumes

@LigamentBandy come again? Bag and accessories ROOM? Need to know more.

@Foxlover46 similar story here, took me 3 years to fully understand my new work uniform after pandemic. I spend 2 years working in my gym kit, assuming we will be back in pencil dresses soon. Never happened, even office days are dressed down. However, we did have SLT meeting this week and all the women did put on old school smart. First time I have seen some with their leegies out.

@Tarnishedbutton best of luck to you! I met 2 people at DH work party who I didn’t see since last year’s, a couple, both on these injections. Unrecognisable, they look amazing. So is my colleague at work and she bought a lot of new clothes for her new size, and looks fantastic.

@HeartOfChocolate
Thank you!
I've lost almost four stone after years of trying and failing, still a little to go but feeling healthier, my IBS has stopped, I'm feeling healthier mentally too. It was never about looking better for me when I made the decision it was about taking some stress off my joints (which were already creaking I'm sure) and other long term health problems as I got slightly older don't get me wrong it's a lovely added extra!

Clothes - whenever something has holes in or no longer fits or can't be repaired. Buy quality the first time and it lasts! Usually only by new in sales, also shop in charity shops for only the brands I like, very occasionally.

Shoes - as above. I treated myself to a pair of ankle boots in October to replace a pair that I had to bin at the end of last winter (after 5yr wear).

Make-up - foundation and mascara whenever they run out. Worn every day.

Jewellery - I last treated myself to a pair of silver studs for £3 in 2022. Before that it was in 2015! Received decent and fairly spenny jewellery from DH for birthdays however.

Watches - mine last purchased in 2012. £20. Still going strong. Prior to that, my last watch was purchased in 2002.

Hair cut - twice a year.

Nails - not done since 2019. Occasionally paint myself.

Spa days / facials - couple of times a year.

Girls weekend away - couple of times a year.

Meals out - every couple of weeks.

Coffee shop treat- 2 or 3 times a week.

Everyone has their own way of treating themselves! Mine is with food and beverage 🤭

fiualdje · 06/12/2024 07:36

I worked out recently I spend about £300 (averaged out) on my regular spends (nails, eyebrows, Botox, hair, gym, sport I play) I tend to buy some new clothes about twice a year, but want to start buying less and opt for more timeless type stuff.

TheOGCCL · 06/12/2024 09:07

I’m always buying things for myself, new cosmetics and toiletries to try out and lots of clothes and accessories (c 50-60 items per year despite trying to be low buy). I want to cut down and am closer than ever to knowing what products are right for me and next year I am thinking of doing the rule of five for clothing - only allowed to buy five items including shoes.

I’ve never been in debt or any kind of financial trouble, overpay my mortgage each month, don’t smoke, drink or eat out a lot, and always return items which aren’t right, so I guess this is just the way I like to spend my money but I am uncomfortable with my over consumption.

My friend Kolin is a stylist,, he also works for Burberry as for he doesn't gave enough clients for full time. He charges £900 a day for going out shopping with you and £3000 if he has done the shopping already and you spend time in the studio trying on lunch then shopping.
