Which Charlotte Tilbury (or other) products for my wedding day?

ImGettingMARRIEEEED · 05/12/2024 14:16

I'm getting married in 2025 and want to do my own makeup. I've heard really good things about Charlotte Tilbury makeup but would like some guidance before I buy! Any other brands are also welcome.

I prefer very natural makeup rather than full glam. My usual routine is just a light foundation, a bit of bronzer and some mascara and I don't want to sway too far from that for the wedding.

My skin type is oily. I don't want to spend masses but am happy spending slightly above high street prices for something that's worth the money.

What I'm aiming to buy:

  • A foundation, something that's not too heavy but that will stay put all day and won't make me look even oilier than I usually am.
  • A setting spray, is CT the best to go for or are there others?
  • A blush, something discreet because I tend to get a bit red in the cheeks anyway!
  • A lip tint. I absolutely hate reapplying lip products all day so if there's a tint or something that then that would be perfect.
  • A bronzer, maybe.

I think that's all. Am I forgetting anything? Any recommendations would be wonderful, please!

Have a look at Merit makeup. In my experience Charlotte Tilbury isn't particularly natural-looking makeup; I like it, but for 'full glam' looks!

Housewife2010 · 05/12/2024 14:21

As you like a natural makeup look, I would suggest a Bobbi Brown wedding makeup lesson. I had one many years ago and was very happy with the result. The products are great too. I like Charlotte Tilbury makeup but the signature look is always very shiny.

sweetpickle2 · 05/12/2024 14:22

Ths foundation is very long wearing, satin finish (so good for oily skin) and looks very natural and skin like. I'm a skin tint girl most of the time but when I want more full coverage I go for this and it's not scary at all, it's very buildable https://lp.narscosmetics.co.uk/en/0607845066156.html?lpoid=fd5dd6bfbd5a2cde1fbf4608463a295b2e9d2241&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAu8W6BhC-ARIsACEQoDD8GMD1BwcyaZP4I7FmBndXDmdvIUJs82t19El-aIb-VuyTHUQUTmgaAo1_EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

Agree CT is more full glam than natural. The setting spray is good though (although this is a dupe for less money https://www.boots.com/milani-make-it-last-setting-spray-natural-60ml-10270932?srsltid=AfmBOoqSfmf6Umdh_Lc0sLpnBNTFsbvMwcv69Y4yMT25tR1loHdXY3Rv)

For a lip tint I'd get a wonderskin lip stain- they really do not budge all day- https://eu.wonderskin.com/products/wonderblading-for-lips-long-lasting-waterproof-lip-stain

For your wedding though I'd be prepared to buy a few things and not use them all, as you'll want to trial them properly.

ImGettingMARRIEEEED · 05/12/2024 15:05

Oooh thank you, some good recommendations there. @sweetpickle2 I've been seeing that lip stain all over Tiktok in recent months, I think I'll definitely purchase that and see what I think. Do you find the colours to be quite similar to what's advertised on the website?

OP posts:
sweetpickle2 · 05/12/2024 15:06

Yes, although they vary in intensity depending on how long you leave it on for before wiping off.

Patienceinshortsupply · 05/12/2024 15:09

I read the rave reviews that CT gets on here, and bought a full make up kit from there. Honestly, even my then teenage DD's wouldn't touch it - it was Rimmel quality in high end packaging. The mascara was horrific and I sent 2 back thinking they were faulty but nope, it was just gloop.

I find Victoria Beckham beauty/make up much better quality, especially the lip stain and eyeliners/mascara. I've been pleased with every purchase.

Gatecrashermum · 05/12/2024 15:13

CT looks are very glamorous- i had a make up session there and came away feeling like a disco ball.

I had a make up lesson at bobbi brown for my wedding make up and I couldn't be happier. I wore a tinted moisturiser, eye make up and blush, lipstick. On my photos you honestly wouldn't think I was wearing makeup, I just look really nice!

Honestly, bobbi brown is what you want. They were so lovely to me and I found it easy to recreate the look they did for me

ImGettingMARRIEEEED · 05/12/2024 15:23

Quite a few votes for Bobbi Brown. I can't go for one of their makeup lessons as I'm not in the UK and we don't have it here! I'll have a look on their website though and see if any products catch my eye, I know they've been around donkeys and people seem really happy with them so definitely worth a try.

I had a Bobbi Brown makeup session where the consultant made my face up and provided me with a list of all the products used on a facemap. I didn't tell her it was for my wedding as as soon as you say that the price doubles. I think that it was £50 which could be redeemed towards any products that you buy.

frockandcrocs · 05/12/2024 15:34

If you want long lasting, take a look at Pat McGrath's stuff. I have a gorgeous eyeshadow pallet but also the only foundation I wear now (although it's rare I wear any).

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 05/12/2024 15:39

I have some CT bits that I like, but there's much better products out there.
I have a mascara which is just awful - almost instant panda eye, certainly not a look you want for your wedding!

Saying that, I do love the setting spray, and always replace when it runs out.

Poggishairtufts · 05/12/2024 16:21

Would echo the Bobbi Brown recommendation, and also throw Laura Mercier into the mix.

Where are you OP? Someone might be able to suggest something helpful.

I've never tried the CT stuff, she's meant to be a horror in real life and I know she sold the company but can't bring myself to support that nonsense, darlings.

I booked the wedding one at BB. The cost was redeemed by the products I bought. It was handy that she knew that it was my wedding as she gave me tips on my makeup lasting and looking good in photographs.

Bobbi Brown Mac Chanel ( Rimmel lipstick! Cheap cheerfully non drying)
Dislike CT & don't get the hype , it's pretty heavy duty , thick and often chalky looking
If you are planning on doing you make up yourself, are you aware of how it looks irl & photos are hugely different .
How the flash of the camera can distort make up , lots of people get a reverse panda effect , and day makeup can get 'lost'
Wedding make up is difficult in my opinion ( qualified BT/MUA and attended many weddings with the photographers/film team)
Agree with pp never say "wedding" prices shoot up

adiffer · 05/12/2024 19:34

Nars foundation and concealer, Chanel bronzer

I don't wear blush but have heard good things about Nars or Dior and what about the Clinique lip balm that brings out your own lip colour. Can't mind the name, black honey or rose honey I think

LigamentBandy · 05/12/2024 19:59

Dior mascara is good

fiorentina · 05/12/2024 20:00

Also agree that a Bobbi Brown make up lesson is really good. I had one and did my own makeup. Very natural which is what I wanted.

ImGettingMARRIEEEED · 06/12/2024 11:07

I've heard really good things about the CT setting spray, but also another one that's very cheap and that lots of millenial women used in their teens, but I can't for the life of me remember the name/brand!

@Poggishairtufts I'm in France! I can get just about any brand but only online and makeup counters aren't really much of a thing where I am, I've definitely never seen the ones like in the UK that have someone there to do a trial.

@LigamentBandy No clue what to do about that really. I just want to look like I do every day, just slightly nicer, so don't want to spend hundreds on trials etc. Also if I do get a makeup artist for the day of, I don't want to feel like I also have to fork out for my mother/mother in law/best friend etc also getting their makeup done! So it's a tricky one, that's why I thought I'd give it a go myself.

@adiffer I've already got the Clinique Black Honey! Love it, but hate that I have to reapply it all the time, hence why I'm looking for a lip stain instead.

It's your day you do you, my point was when you look back at photos you might be surprised /disappointed I've known several brides who were; then it clouded their special day. I'm not suggesting you lay out loads of money but once you say wedding prices can go up (social compliance/ expectations) I've worked with wedding suppliers so seen first hand most ppl splash lots on weddings. So many stories on the "importance " of what colour crystals on the tables, the centerpieces etc that in all honesty nobody notices)

AnnaMagnani · 06/12/2024 13:21

If you are doing your own make-up I'd look at Lisa Eldrige. She has a lot of videos, some specifically wedding looks.

I practised a natural looking simple one and was very happy with the results.

I used Bobby Brown makeup for my wedding as I like looking natural too! I bought a lovely foundation, brown eyeshadow and a pinky-brown lipstick. I did it all myself, I don't like that over made-up look makeup artists give.

rubia · 06/12/2024 13:38

a little off topic but having been there done that I'd consider having make up done professionally! obviously with a trial. I'm very low key normally and didn't want to look over done so didn't and have regretted it. Bless my hairdresser, she pointed out that you need a bit more for photography and helped me a bit. I think so many wonderful things can be done with makeup to make you look just the very best you without being disco glam but those of us that don't do it regularly have no idea! I also regret not having a video (days before everyone could whip out a phone!) as I didn't want too much fuss but now over a decade later I would love a watch- it all went by in such a blur! Congratulations and enjoy :)

ForBrickSheep · 06/12/2024 13:57

During my makeup trials Charlotte Tilbury and Bobby Brown were used and they really didn't last on my skin type. It was cakey by hour 3. The CT lipstick has no staying power and lasts about an hour. I've had better from Maybelline.
I ended up going to John Lewis and trying out loads. The only one that impressed me was Hourglass. It's a bit more expensive than CT but miles better. I bought what I needed and the artist used it instead of her own makeup.

It's definitely something I'll continue having a think about. Overall it's a very low budget wedding, more like a garden party really, so I'm not spending money on wedding favours/place settings etc, so perhaps I'll decide to allocate a small amount to makeup. Thank you for your view, it's helpful!

I have considered this! We've got a photographer rather than a videographer but I saw a really sweet idea on Tiktok recently to hand over your phone to someone you trust (and who likes taking photos/videos of course) and they'll snap away throughout the day, then once the wedding is over your camera roll is filled with photos and videos! Regardless, there are a fair amount of people coming who will 100% be taking lots of videos/photos so I'm planning on asking all guests to forward them to me :[
