What is a Birkie?

I don't fall in any of those groups. I wear black shoes with a small heel for work, black Boots with trousers in the winter and black/cream canvas sandals type shoes in the summer.

wontbepreggersagain · 29/04/2008 10:20

in sunny west wales we're all off to the beach- weather is fab atm (but remeber we live in wales so anything warmer than -4deg is warm to us!)
birkies= birkenstocks

SixSpotBurnet · 29/04/2008 10:21

Wore Birkenstocks when pregnant but really I think there is no justification for them otherwise. Their ugliness is only surpassed by that of Crocs .

Mercy · 29/04/2008 10:23

It was wellies all round this morning.

Where are you?

wontbepreggersagain · 29/04/2008 10:32

Saw these mentioned in one of the papers over the weekend ... this summer's must haves www.tomsshoes.com/productslist.aspx?CategoryID=7&selection=1

Bink · 29/04/2008 10:39

Footwear at my children's schools split into:

(a) trainers;
(b) Sensible Shoes, chosen for ease & efficiency in commuting, but not for glamour; and
(c) scary scary high fashion boots.

I am in camp (b). They all seem to mingle, somehow, and I quite like talking to members of camp (c) because I can't but sense just how much more comfy I am. (They're probably thinking gratifiedly how much cooler than me they are, so we're all happy!)

Mercy · 29/04/2008 10:41

Millie, they are just awful!

millie1 · 29/04/2008 10:42

I know ... I agree entirely!!

brimfull · 29/04/2008 10:43

those toms are slippers surely?

Psychomum5 · 29/04/2008 10:46

we seem to have 4 groups...

trainers
scary high heels (boots or shoes)
sensible nice boots/shoes
flip flops that are clearly too small or old.....yack!!!

ArcticRoll · 29/04/2008 10:46

Too cold here for Birkies.
We have another category-skinny jeans and Converse All Stars-deffo no crossover with Croc wearing section.

Piffle · 29/04/2008 10:46

mine are funky sensible ( or else I am deluded) camper Mary janes. Rocket dog flats and leather toe thongs. Plus have boden ballet flats circa 2004 wearing very well.
birks only for garden/home.
yeah we have nice mums who wear hooker shoes. Abundance of crocs too. The crocs spot number increasing day to day. I do not shun on that count yet.

Fllight · 29/04/2008 10:47

I have been wearing my sheepskin knee lenght leather uggs. Everyone stares. i can't blame them, I look ridiculous but yes, they are the only pair I can find

Not quite sorted out the summer plan yet

Fllight · 29/04/2008 10:49

Ooh there is one mum with lush long blonde hair (tousled I think is the word) and high topshoppe wedges and purple tights

she would be lovely to look at if she could a) smile and b) walk. It looks depressing.

lumpsdumps · 29/04/2008 18:28

At our school there are the mums that wear the following:

Ballet pumps
Trainers
ugg boots
Wedges/high heeled boots
Yucky flip flops/crocs

Depending on whether I am working or not, I usually wear ballet pumps or wedges.

When I'm at home, its either ballet pumps or ugg boots and in the summer, a very nice pair of flip flops, without any overspill! It helps that I get such a generous work discount!

Twinkie1 · 29/04/2008 18:30

I am in the Birkie group and will wear mine from now until at least end of October unless we have truely awful weather - freedom for my feet at last from boots and trainers!

Most women round here wear birkies, crocs (bleugh!) or long posh boots!

cece · 29/04/2008 18:38

Had my birkies on yesterday. Too wet today though.

blousy · 29/04/2008 18:42

I'm in the birkie camp. I find the fat mums wear crocs. Sorry, but true!
