Hair doesn't grow

TruffleNoir · 27/11/2024 21:57

I feel like I'm going crazy but the sides of my hair never grow past a certain length. This has been the case for years after me getting a layered cut. Even though my hair is now below shoulder length, The fronts are like eye level then next is my ear.

I don't dye it anymore, I have stopped heat. I am at the end of my tether and it upset me this bits are so short. Can anyone help?

I had the same issue, ended up getting extensions!

TruffleNoir · 27/11/2024 22:47

Oh god, really! Any idea what caused it?

Hi, the same has happened to me. I've taken biotin, b complex and a few other vitimins nothing works but I have noticed this seemed to happen after I was put on a low dose statin. Have you noticed hair stopped growing after any medication was prescribed?

It's always been quite fine and frizzy. I used a hairdryer and straighteners on it a fair bit so would get dry split ends that needed trimming every 8 weeks or so. This probably chopped off some of the growth but the alternative was dry frazzled ends!

That's how I started years ago and got it cut really short and didn't use heat for about two years while it grew. Again the front end sides just stops at the same place.

I'm going to look at taking vitamins. I was on anti depressants for years and stopped a few months ago.

Generally everyone's hair has a natural length that it stops at - the 'terminal length'. For some people that's very long, for others it's not.

TheDandyLion · 28/11/2024 09:47

Do you wear glasses and do the hairs around your face get caught in the frames?

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 28/11/2024 11:13

I'm 63 and take biotin and collagen + conditioning masks etc. I only use heat once or twice a week.

My hair is strong and shiny but the hair on my sides stops growing just short of the collar bone. The hair on the back grows longer. I have to keep having it trimmed to avoid a mullet look.

it used to grow super long all over when I was younger so I've assumed it's an aging thing. If anyone can suggest a 'cure' I'd be thrilled. I'd love it to be just long enough to twist up into a sleek updo without sticky out bits at the sides ruining the look.

Littleguggi · 28/11/2024 11:57

I have this problem ever since having kids. My hair never grows apart from my fringe probably because I cut it regularly. My hair is dry and frizzy, it looks dead, so I always just put it up. If going out I'll add extensions. For me I think it's genetic sadly!

TheLeadbetterLife · 28/11/2024 13:36

When my hair went thin and dry what sorted it out for me was protein, and lots of it, especially liver. I also take B12 once a month. I think real food works better than supplements, maybe the gut absorbs the nutrients more easily or something?

I think this varies from person to person. I just don't absorb iron and B12 well from food and need supplementation.

I'm reading all your replies thinking ✅✅✅

-been on medication

  • wear glasses
  • been wondering if it's an age thing - I'm 38 now
  • it's been since having kids

I've had it really long before though that's why I don't get it. It's been since I had it layered years ago.

It will definitely be growing, but breaking off. Mine was the same, and the hair on the nape of my neck too. It's fragile hair coming into contact with friction, so basically you need to eat well/supplement and avoid things frequently touching your hair, such as glasses, collars of clothes, necklaces, bobbles (get silk scrunchies - also silk pillow cases), towels (get microfibre ones), even regularly tucking your hair behind your ears will cause breakage of hair isn't super strong and healthy.

I've been working on being careful with my hair for a couple of months now (particularly not wearing my glasses on my head and using soft towels, bobbles and pillow case) and it seems to be growing properly now.

cookiebee · 28/11/2024 15:15

As has been mentioned that will be your hair’s terminal length, I only discovered this was a thing recently. The hair on any part of our heads will only grow to the length of its cycle, which can vary from two to six years, then of course it stops and the hair is shed.

I come at this from a place of having a very crappy time with what would be considered very substandard hair. When I reached my early thirties I lost all vanity and worry about it. I was on a bus going down a very crowded Oxford Street and was looking at just how many people there are on this planet, all different and very few what would be considered perfect, unfortunately on television most of them are, so we see this and it can make us feel crap, but please don’t feel that way.

We don’t all get perfect thick hair that grows beautifully, but I hope you find the solution that works for you and makes you feel good about the hair you do have, maybe even a different style, may help you love the length. I can’t grow mine either, but you can try not to think about what you really want but learn to love what you’ve been given.

Seriously get your ferritin checked. I had iron deficiency anaemia for decades and didn't know. When I had an infusion twice over a year or two my hair suddenly came back to life. Hair is the last place your body will use energy as it's effectively dead... most women are functionally iron deficient so it is worth checking. Should be around 100.

duncan1949 · 28/11/2024 20:11

Exactly the same here!

@ShootyBumPain can you recommend a towel please? I've got a satin pillow already.

I know it's hard not to compare by thinking everyone's hair grows quicker and thicker tb a you're own. I feel that all the time. I'll try to change mindset too.

Thank you I'll look into this.

Going to concentrate on more water intake, vitamins etc as well.

This week I've been clipping the short bits at the side back to try and keep them at bay so not tucking behind ears or playing with them etc

I used to have hair past my elbows.

It just won't grow past my shoulders now. It's weird. It's in ok condition. I eat well and all that. It just won't grow long anymore.

Why is that?

TruffleNoir · 02/01/2025 10:43

Hiya, any recommendations for a microfiber towel please?

OP posts:
GreyBlackBay · 02/01/2025 10:56

An old cotton t-shirt is an excellent hair towel, having been washed so many times makes it really sift and absorbent.

For a microfiber you need the smooth type that's sold for sport not the tougher one often used in the hair wrap style ones.

I'm trying to post a link but can't, just search for microfiber swim towel, it should look like it folds up really small.

TruffleNoir · 03/01/2025 16:26

Thank you. I'll try a t shirt first!
