Would you wear this dress if you were me ?

I'm an hourglass 14/16. I recently bought a beautiful black velvet v neck midi dress in Zara .It's beautiful on except my wide flabby belly sticks out even with skims. It's an x l and stated that it's a small fit but there is no xxl. I'd love to wear it but would possibly be self conscious even though the velvet is forgiving.
What could I do to hide my belly ? I'd hate to return it. It's perfect in every other way .
Thanks

Silk scarf in a festive colour worn hanging down? With matching lippy!

Not the dreaded indoor scarf. The uniform of the self-conscious overweight woman. And it would ruin a beautiful dress.

I would return it OP. Nothing worse than feeling uncomfortable.

Skims is a brand, @another1bitestheduck. (Not some cryptic slang!). Here:

https://skims.com/en-gb

well you learn something every day.

I would argue it would be better to use the specific term rather than an overarching brand if you want to be understood by everyone. Looking at that website 'Skims' the brand covers everything from socks to men's boxers so doesn't necessarily indicate shapewear.

e.g. 'I've tried the dress with tights and ankle boots but it doesn't look good,' is more generally comprehensible than 'I've tried the dress with my Snags and Dunes."

Also pedant alert but if Skims had been capitalised it would have been clearer it was referring to a brand.

Skims is a famous brand that primarily does shapewear.

If OP had said spanx would you be arguing? Skims is probably the most famous shapewear brand right now. Its like if someone said they tried on their dress with their DMs we'd all know what they were talking about

whitefluffybear · 27/11/2024 13:10

This is it ! Simple but the shape suits me ... just not the belly
Part of it ! It's just above ankle in length.

That style of dress is fine to have a belly in. It's lovely.

WalterdelaMare · 27/11/2024 13:14

Gorgeous dress OP. Shame they don’t do a bigger size.

samedifferent · 27/11/2024 13:14

OP the only way for us to really know if the dress looks good on you and you are being unnecessarily self conscious or if it actually doesn't suit your shape is to see a photo of you in it.
You don't have to show your face.
It is really hard to tell otherwise.

Mairzydotes · 27/11/2024 11:22

Can you wear shapewear under it ?

Says in the post she’s tried it with skims

SirChenjins · 27/11/2024 13:17

That style of dress can really accentuate a tummy but if you're wearing shapewear it should b OK. Ar you perhaps being overly critical of yourself? Agree with the pp who say we'd really need to se a photo (with your face hidden) to tell for sure.

whitefluffybear · 27/11/2024 13:18

It's my lower belly if that makes sense. My upper one doesn't protrude .. just the souvenir belly as I call it. Apron like .

Do you have a friend or relative you can trust to be totally honest?

It might look better then you think and you are just super aware of your tummy.

I agree with this - you need someone (with a reasonable sense of style) to see you in the dress to advise you. Nobody on this thread has any idea what you look like wearing it, so we are just guessing.

Theak · 27/11/2024 13:36

I’m the same OP- hourglass figure with a little c section belly. That wouldn’t flatter me at all, unless I wore some serious spanx. I tend wear skater style dresses.

Honestly, OP. Try a waspie waist cincher.

fivebyfivebuffy · 27/11/2024 13:39

Depends how comfortable you feel
I can't wear shapewear or anything like that so stomach it is!
If I'm feeling sensitive though I would wear something looser (but then I just look huge all over) as people tend to ask when I'm due Sad

SharpOpalNewt · 27/11/2024 13:40

It depends how you feel in it. If it's a lower belly thing would some supportive tights help you at least feel comfortable and supported in the dress?

I wore a satin dress that shape to a summer party a couple of years ago, as a size 14 and didn't bother with shape wear. I'm a cylinder basically 😂

LilyRose88 · 27/11/2024 13:44

That Zara dress looks lovely. I say wear the dress and don't worry if your lower belly sticks out. And @SharpOpalNewt you look amazing in that dress. it reminds me of a Ghost dress that I have.

SharpOpalNewt · 27/11/2024 13:45

You are very kind, it is a Ghost one.

whitefluffybear · 27/11/2024 13:47

Haha@SharpOpalNewt .. I have that in white !!! It's gorgeous

Lovely dress
Try these with it

leonisa.uk/products/firm-compression-postpartum-knicker-with-adjustable-belly-wrap

MidnightMeltdown · 27/11/2024 15:56

Personally I wouldn't. I've bought things before that I've liked, but felt a bit self conscious in, and they've stayed hung in the wardrobe. Waste of money.

I'm a 10-12 and wouldn't shop in Zara these days, as I don't think that their clothes are made to flatter larger figures. We need thicker fabrics and better tailoring as we get older.

MarshmallowsOnToast · 27/11/2024 16:26

I completely agree that you need proper shape wear with boning. They're magic!

Spanx/skims sometimes don't cut it.

I have an apron pouch that I can't get rid of no matter what I weigh (thank you 10lb baby!) and wouldn't be without my waist cincher.
