Is tights with open toed shoes a no-no?

I have a lovely dress I’d like to wear for my works Xmas day out and also some lovely heeled sandals. Trouble is my legs are no good at being bare - I’m 51 and past the days of bare legs.

ideally I’d like opaque tights but these would look really weird with sandals. I’d wear sheer tights I guess but the toe seam on the tights would be visible and I’d feel very granny.

would I be better off wearing a dainty boot with the dress rather than sandals?

the dress is knee length and black and a bit sparkly. What’s the done thing now? I’m so out of touch!

I would go with the boots rather than open toe sandals. I don't think it looks good with the tights seam poking out the hole in the sandals, and also, I would be absolutely guaranteed to go through the toe of my tights if I took such a risk. And that would definitely not look good!

You can get toeless tights for sandals

BrunchBarBandit · 23/11/2024 12:27

Toeless tights?

Is tights with open toed shoes a no-no?
Careergoals · 23/11/2024 12:30

Ah thanks the toeless tights wouldn’t work as the whole foot is visible in the shoes.
Thanks though! I had no idea they existed.
I need to get some boots I think, cheers

I wore very sheer M&S toeless tights for a spring wedding - they were very good.

But you don't want to be wearing open toe sandals in December, particularly with opaque tights - I think that wouldn't be a good look.

ConstanceMartensCat · 23/11/2024 15:04

I think it depends on the sandals. If they’re chunky and a bright colour and the rest of your outfit is quite fashion forward you can get away with black opaques but if they’re delicate tights are a hard no. I wouldn’t want to wear sandals at this time of year anyway and the one time I tried those toeless tights I found them excruciatingly uncomfortable.

Moveoverdarlin · 23/11/2024 15:06

I think it’s a complete no-no. Wear tights as planned and buy some new shoes. Sandals in December is never a great idea anyway.

TheOGCCL · 23/11/2024 15:36

It would have to be black opaque tights but depends on the sandals eg you could wear Esska style sandals very easily, that's quite a fashionable look these days.

Ladybyrd · 23/11/2024 15:39

💯. It's something my mum used to do and I still shudder.

rainbowbee · 23/11/2024 15:48

Wear ordinary tights and get some closed-toe shoes.

NewNameNoelle · 23/11/2024 15:52

It’s a complete no-no

Options would be: opaque with closed toe shoes or heeled boots (I can’t pull this off but others can), sheer with closed toe shoes, no tights with your strappy sandals

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 23/11/2024 16:58

I’d get a nice shoe or boot instead. John Lewis often have their own make with a sparkly diamanté buckle or something or a black kitten heel might work.

I’ve worn the tights you can wear with sandals and you can see the join at end toes, it didn’t look great, didn’t look awful but just not great either! Was as a cold rainy April wedding with me as bridesmaid and shoes probably wouldn’t have worked or I didn’t want to wear shoes.

I agree.
Or wear fake tan.

PollyIndia · 23/11/2024 18:10

i think it can work depending on the tights and sandals. I’ve got sheer tights with no toe seam from calzedonia which I wear with black glittery platform sandals from terry de havilland and that works. I wouldn’t wear opaques with them though. Attached a pic

Much prefer no tights at all, but I understand that sometimes, tights are a must.
Am in the minority but have no issue wearing open toe shoes with tights. I actually think open toe or even strappy sandals can look incredibly chic when worn with sheer tights. That said, never opaques or nude, just sheer barely black/charcoal.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 23/11/2024 21:07

You can wear coloured opaques with open toed shoes or sandals but you've got to do it with confidence and it won't work with every dress and shoe. Alexa Chung, Victoria Beckham and Sarah Jessica Parker get it right

I think bare legs look awful except in summer and in winter just look daft. Fake tan is awful any time of the year.

Badatmostthings · 23/11/2024 21:14

Every day's a school day. I've just googled some images and it can be done OP!
Thank you @IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle.

Open toed shoes with tights makes me feel weird, like on edge somehow .
Not helpful but bleurgh!
Sorry

bowlingalleyblues · 23/11/2024 22:01

Fishnets without toe seam could work

But are they opened toed? If they are, you can’t actually see the models toes, which is why they look ok in that picture.

eurochick · 24/11/2024 00:21

Toeless tights work well. But if they don't fit with the shape of your shoes then no tights or different footwear.

Cakeandcardio · 24/11/2024 03:37

Spotted this on River Island earlier so maybe not as bad as you think?

I have also worn open toe shoes with tights in the past (even in my early 20s).

CrazyAndSagittarius · 24/11/2024 04:57

I've worn sheer tights with sheer toes (so no reinforced ties) with open toed shoes. M&S used to do them. They looked fine on a night out. Probably not so fine in broad daylight but in evening light they looked fine.
