Is M&S sizing a bit small or all over the place?

Just received an order of 2x wide leg jeans, 3x dresses and a blazer. I got everything in a size 24 because a) I've gained weight and gone from an 18/20 to a 22 and b) I've always found M&S items a bit short on me (I'm 5ft9)

The jeans had absolutely no hope of fastening, one of the dresses was basically a top. The other two dresses fit pretty well (but like a 22 from Next or Fat Face - one is stretchy, one is not, both quite fitted styles) as does the blazer (also fitted style).

I have linen shirts, tops and knitwear from M&S in a 20/22 and they fit great too. Bottoms are not my friend, clearly!

Does anyone else experience this?

I think the sizing is small. I'm usually a 12 (28'' waist and no hips before people queue up to tell me I must be wrong) and 5'9. I've consistently been a 14 in M and S but tried some 14 jeans on recently and they were too tight and weirdly also gave me horrendous camel toe. Also long trousers are too long and regular too short. I do think some of the difference of opinion is down to the different items people are trying on and personal preference for fit etc.

I'm not sure why M&S has the reputation of generous sizing - perhaps it's in comparison with stores mainly catering to a younger market. I find the sizing to be a lot smaller than at Next - although that is becoming more and more unreliable.

I bought pyjamas where you can buy the top and bottom separately as I am tall and so buy long length bottoms. Bought first colour fitted fine, bought exactly the same style in another colour and the bottoms were about 8cm longer. I had already taken the tags off as I thought I knew what I was buying. So I had to shorten the bottoms substantially
Also bought 3 pairs of identical casual summer trousers in different colours - they all fitted differently. One pair a bit tight, one pair a bit loose and the final pair just right.
Their sizing is hopeless 🙄

I'm generally a size 8. M&S clothes don't fit me at all. One size will be tiny and I can't do it up. The next size up is massive and falling off me. Tops are sort of OK but I can't buy trousers from there at all. I assume my shape/weight distribution is just wrong for M&S clothes - long skinny legs, short body, no boobs, bit of a tummy!

TheOGCCL · 22/11/2024 16:45

I don’t buy much there and definitely not trousers as they are all far too high waisted. I think tops wise they often cut deliberately oversize even if a lot of customers don’t actually want that. And then sometimes they don’t, so you end up unsure whether to take normal size or size down. I’m a standard size 10.

ThePoshUns · 22/11/2024 16:50

I nearly always size down in M&S apart from trousers.

User37482 · 22/11/2024 16:51

All over the place imo.

GoldenGumballs · 22/11/2024 16:52

I tried on the famous leopard wide leg jeans yesterday and I couldn’t get the size 20 to fasten. I am usually a 18/20 so was a bit 🤨

urbanbuddha · 22/11/2024 16:54

I always used to find them too big but I tried on a jumper in my size the other day and if anything it was a bit too snug.

AmICrazyToEvenBother · 22/11/2024 16:55

I've found their jeans really erratic! Clothes also not so large as they used go be, so pretty inconsistent!

Daisy03 · 22/11/2024 16:57

Always on the larger size though reading comments that may be just in the 'smaller sizes'. I find it the same with next, I've got M&S trousers from 15 years ago which are snug in a 12, these days I need an 8 or 10 in both shops

soupmaker · 22/11/2024 16:59

M&S sizing completely erratic. As I say to my DD's it's the clothes that are wrong not your body. Different shapes and cuts suit different bodies. I just ignore numbers and wear what flatters my shape. I wear size 14 to size 22 clothes!

Mirrorxxx · 22/11/2024 17:02

Usually big for me. Just got some leggings and had to go down 2 sizes but I’ve tried on knitwear before that was tiny and very short. All their trousers are for short people

rocketgal · 22/11/2024 17:16

I used to find them on the big side but not recently. I've got size 12 jeans from there I wear regularly but bought two pairs of wide legs in a 14 recently and couldn't get them close to doing up

I had the exact same issue

thisiswheretheseagullfliesaway · 22/11/2024 17:20

It's all over the place lately. I've lost two stone a had to buy a size bigger in jeans 😂 gutted.

I find it's mixed. Often too big, but whenever I buy anything in black, it's always too tight! Recently bought two pairs of the same jeans size 14, the blue were slightly big, the black wouldn't do up.

This happened to me and when I took the black ones back the lady who served me said the black ones always run smaller than other colours. I am usually 12 but have clothes from there in 12, 14, 16 and they all fit me perfectly. I am picking up a jumper from there on Monday and ordered the brown in 12 and black in 14 and one will be going back no doubt.

Good to know. I thought I was going mad. Literally anything black I buy from there is smaller than the equivalent in any other colour!
