Tired of my face looking tired, 50, what can I do?

BlossomOfOrange · 17/11/2024 12:10

Google searching suggests two possible solutions- fillers, and/or veneers to get my teeth to fill in side gaps in my smile and therefore help to unsink my cheeks. Does anyone with experience think those are good options (one or both?)? Or something else?

Any tips welcome (ideally with a rough idea of cost and how to go about it).

Some context:

  • my sleep has been interrupted for over a decade due to babies, stress, menopause probably, but get between 6-7 hours a night.
  • reasonable diet, no caffeine, avg of 1 glass of wine a week, but fair amount of crisps and chocolate, not great at drinking water.
  • sedentary job but I do some exercise eg swimming and Pilates.
  • i think I do what I can with make up.
  • keen to not spend a fortune

Oh, and the bits that look tired - sunken cheeks, eye bags, jowels

I've heard cheek fillers do a good job of lifting jowls and marionette lines

I'm considering going for that soon....

I had Botox last month for the first time and it's been good.

It's softened my frown lines and lifted my eye area a little bit.

I'm also 50

See someone and take their advice. A good person will ask you what you don't like and can make appropriate suggestions. I have found one of the most effective is a little filler in mouth lines and a tiny bit on the cheekbone to lift it all. Costs about 250. Lasts about 12- 18 months on me.

Microblading your eyebrows - it is basically tattoo-ing them in. Your eyebrows have probably lightened with age and could do with a boost.

They are so important as they frame your face. Once you have them microbladed, you don't need to put eyebrow pencil. Your face is always on.

I also have permanent eyeliner on my upper lids. Saves me a lot of time in the morning as I wake up make-up ready.

I'm waiting for someone to post a solution!! I'm 53, just come through peri and now look at an old lady in the mirror- I feel great again but do not look It. Not 'glam' but wouldn't mind tips to look younger.
DH is my age but Peter fucking pan Grin although his hair is now thinning! he is still younger looking and wayyy stronger than me. He does all heavy lifting although our DS is 22 and I think possibly stronger now. My face just looks saggy- I'm plump so not many wrinkles but would like to be more uplifted/get rid of the jowls.

blueshoes · 18/11/2024 01:02

Only a face lift can get rid of jowls and skin laxity that comes with age.

GettingStuffed · 18/11/2024 05:17

Don't do fillers. It's common knowledge they cause more problems than they solve.

Veneers usually only last around 10 years and you'll need to replace them as they damage the surface of the tooth to get them to stick.

thedevilinablackdress · 18/11/2024 07:31

I've read lots of threads like this, and the more I do the more it makes me sad that we see ourselves as a collection of problems to be fixed. Especially when that's with expensive and potentially risky cosmetic interventions. Or a laboratory's worth of retinols, peptides, niacinamides and the rest to turn back the clock. I'm in no way immune to missing my younger face, but I'm focusing in looking after myself as I am now.

Rainbow321 · 18/11/2024 07:34

Drink more water , have less sugar.
Sleep more , smile more , moisturize .

Crushed23 · 18/11/2024 11:43

6-7 hours of sleep a night sounds good!

That's what I get and I have no kids or health issues.

Doggymummar · 18/11/2024 11:49

I had some filler at the weekend for my jowls and it's still a bit swollen but my chin is a better shape for sure. You could look at a thread facelift. That's what I was recommended to have but at 1500 it was out of reach price wise. So I had 3 tubes of filler, tear troughs, naso labial , marionette and chin. I have a big party on Wednesday so am hoping the swelling goes down a bit. This little lot cost me £300. Weirdly the guy who does it is a urologist at my local hospital. He is a qualified facial reconstruction surgeon 😷 but the only vacancy was a urologist so he's doing that till he can move over.

I have full respect for the age naturally crew, but I spend 5 hours a day on camera, it's not for me.n

I know you are looking at the structure of your face and say you have exhausted make up options...so this may not be useful:

I find tinted moisturiser does work wonders for me when I am looking tired and old. I use the ByTerry one that is a cc and it makes me glow in a very natural way.

Deathraystare · 19/11/2024 14:54

@BlossomOfOrange @blueshoes

I agree. Had this done ages ago but need it done again as I cannot see very well to pencil them in! So worth it.

Errors · 19/11/2024 14:59

Ten years younger here and following with interest. My nasal labial folds are out of control!

SharpOpalNewt · 19/11/2024 15:02

Good muscle tone really helps, not smoking, enough sleep and not being too thin.

Good moisturiser and eye cream and moisturise before bed. I just use Nivea Q10 stuff, it doesn't have to be very expensive.

That said, I'm not trying to look 20 at 49, I have no problem with looking my age, I just don't want to look 89 at 49.

There is a four year age gap between DH and me, DH the older. A couple of DD2's friends asked if there was a big age gap between their mum and dad 😂I didn't tell DH.

Start taking a supplement of NMN.

It's transformed my skin, sleep quality and energy levels.

Can I ask where you have your upper eyelids done with permanent eyeliner? I'd love this done but am too scared! Can't do it myself as I'm so shortsighted!!!

Are you saying that caffeine causes skin aging?

Not many places do permanent eyeliner for the upper eyelids. Those that do may charge a small fortune. I get mine done in SE London for about £170 for top eyeliner and £85 yearly touch up.

See 'Semi-permanent make up' price list. Lana is lovely and hygiene conscious. A perfectionist.

If you have grey hair, dye it!

What’s NMN?

Sorry not me but can I butt in because I find it fascinating.

NMN is Nicotinamide Mononucleotide. It's a molecule we make naturally in our bodies but we make less of it as we grow older. NMN converts into Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD) in the body and is involved in a lot of functions across the body. While it's not yet been exhaustively researched it is showing potential in anti aging of organs.

https://www.nature.com/articles/d42473-022-00002-7

I have been taking it for a few weeks so I can't give a full view of my experience and am interested in @Aurea experience of it. I have also been taking NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine) for a few weeks longer. A surprising side effect of that was how soft and supple my dry skin felt and how wrinkles on one side of my face seemed to fade somewhat. Very irritating to just be one side I briefly considered walking like a crab and only present that side but I CBA 😆 and my eyebrows grew back, I was losing them which is a symptom of the condition I live with

I have been taking these two because of hypothyroid and thought they might be useful for energy and keeping internal organs healthier. I didn't realise they would have an effect on my skin, although it makes sense with it being an organ iteself.

I've been lurking on this thread because I and have never done much in the way of beauty and style and thought I might learn something useful and I have! Thanks all!

Recent research into nicotinamide mononucleotide and ageing

Cell and animal studies suggest that boosting nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) levels can alleviate or even reverse age-related conditions by stimulating NAD+ metabolism, but will these effects translate to humans?

JMAngel1 · 20/11/2024 05:55

I started taking NMN around 3 weeks ago - too early to report - plus I do so many other things it would be difficult to pinpoint which variable is working 😂

For my jowls, I just got a v lift electrical gizmo - I put it on at night and it massages and pulses my jawline / tbh it’s quite strong and painful but no pain no gain. My DH is used to me with my LED mask and my Nu Face but even he was like, WTF is that. Very noisy too but I think it is lifting my jawline
so I’ll keep going.

ohmymyyiaz · 20/11/2024 06:42

2-3L of water everyday. I started doing that a year ago and can see the improvements. Cut down on processed foods. Also invest in good skincare (and moisturise and SPF). 6-7 hours sleep is decent so keep that up.
