Tired of my face looking tired, 50, what can I do?

Google searching suggests two possible solutions- fillers, and/or veneers to get my teeth to fill in side gaps in my smile and therefore help to unsink my cheeks. Does anyone with experience think those are good options (one or both?)? Or something else?

Any tips welcome (ideally with a rough idea of cost and how to go about it).

Some context:

  • my sleep has been interrupted for over a decade due to babies, stress, menopause probably, but get between 6-7 hours a night.
  • reasonable diet, no caffeine, avg of 1 glass of wine a week, but fair amount of crisps and chocolate, not great at drinking water.
  • sedentary job but I do some exercise eg swimming and Pilates.
  • i think I do what I can with make up.
  • keen to not spend a fortune

@MarkingBad can you share which NMN you are taking please? I'm interested in trying it.

Honestlyhon · 20/11/2024 07:12

I know this sounds stupid but I always look much healthier and better with a tan. I use fake tan - either a spray or dove gradual.

I started taking NMN around 3 weeks ago - too early to report - plus I do so many other things it would be difficult to pinpoint which variable is working 😂

For my jowls, I just got a v lift electrical gizmo - I put it on at night and it massages and pulses my jawline / tbh it’s quite strong and painful but no pain no gain. My DH is used to me with my LED mask and my Nu Face but even he was like, WTF is that. Very noisy too but I think it is lifting my jawline
so I’ll keep going.

@JMAngel1 what brand have you got? Would it help with a slight double chin? Saggy after weight loss.

I take this NMN supplement.

I can't put my finger on the exact changes, but I feel at least ten years younger (I'm 51). My hair is thicker, my skin glows, I walk quicker, I'm in a better mood, I am not exhausted in the afternoon/evening and I wake up with energy. I've also started using ancestral cosmetics face cream so this has probably also helped with my skin.

I know this might sound random but I heard it on a Michael Mosley podcast about ageing. Eat a handful of berries every day. I do this and I eat them with fresh yogurt every day and it really makes my skin glow. From memory the berries contain something that activates cell renewal that isn’t fully understood by scientists yet. I also eat a couple of sweets every day that contain gelatin (collagen).

Another thing I do is put moisturiser around my crows feet, then a thick(ish) layer of Vaseline and let it sit there overnight. I do this 2-3 times a week. It’s called “slugging” and it helps to soften the lines. I also put spf all over my face in the morning and reapply it around my nose and lips throughout the day. At the moment I use Cetaphil daily defence moisturiser and it’s really smoothed my skin.

We're the same age so I'm really glad to hear it is working so well for you!

BabCNesbitt · 20/11/2024 10:35

Re NMN, do you know if it's safe to take that if you're already on HRT? Google is not helping here...

Scrimt · 20/11/2024 10:36

look into myofascial release and the way we hold tension in our faces.

Aurea · 20/11/2024 10:43

@BabCNesbitt

Yes, it's fine to take with HRT (I do).

NMN is a precursor to NAD production which is the anti aging part.

It's a non-conflicting supplement We have half the level at age 50 as we had at age 20.

Only one person I think, mentioned teeth. They would be my number one on a list to do. A thread lift wouldn't be there at all.
OP, your side teeth, are they missing, gappy or what? Are your front teeth nice and straight?

Autumnweddingguest · 20/11/2024 11:12

Keep your eyebrows well shaped. Moisturise your face and massage it always with upward sweeps of the hand. I am always amazed that first thing in the morning my skin is sagging and jowly but by the time I've moisturised and massaged it looks 5 years younger and tighter.

Yoga with lots of inversions, and face yoga. Regular blood-pumping exercise and lots of water.

I use Origins Ginzing eye cream for eye bags. Bit shiny but it does help.

Can anyone advise on what to do about nasolabial folds? I’m fine with the ‘upper’ ones but they’ve started to lengthen and are now quite noticeable. Do you have filler in the fold itself or in the cheek to lift?

HundredMilesAnHour · 20/11/2024 21:28

The simplest way to start is by cutting out all the crisps and chocolate and drinking more water. You'll see an improvement in your skin as well as your bank account.

GettingStuffed · 18/11/2024 05:17

Don't do fillers. It's common knowledge they cause more problems than they solve.

Veneers usually only last around 10 years and you'll need to replace them as they damage the surface of the tooth to get them to stick.

I had veneers put on 2 teeth at age 14 via the NHS as 2 of my adult teeth were so small. I had them replaced (again via nhs) at around age 24 due to the change in jaw shape but they have held up since then - over 20 years, so they should last more than 10 years.

RoundandSad · 20/11/2024 22:22

Couple of posts mentioned the Nu face thing

are those things good. I just looked up reviews and I'm seeing a lot of positive comments. I thought it was a gimmick but maybe not

Wimbledonmum1985 · 20/11/2024 22:32

Curious about the NMN. I did try the brand from Victoria Health but it gave me the worst headaches so stopped it after two weeks.
OP I am hearing great things about polynucleotide treatment and am very tempted to get it next year.

I have a nuface mini and it is good. I was using mine a little too much as it was hollowing out my face! Should start on it again soon but I had a second profilo treatment three weeks ago and I don’t want to affect it

RoundandSad · 21/11/2024 10:28

@Errors i will look at these thanks

No gaps in the rows of teeth and my teeth are straight thanks to orthodontic treatment in my teens. My natural smile is wider than my teeth which is where the space appears

I treat myself to a facial every two months and I think it makes a big difference to my skin. I’m not saying that it performs miracles, but it definitely makes my skin glow.

ZingyRedLion · 01/05/2025 06:44

I can also vouch for nmn, my eyes are certainly brighter. My hair and nails grow quicker too. In terms of skin it's hard to say, but I think given I have a bit more energy and better sleep, my face looks less drawn out.

I use https://healthspanformulas.co.uk nmn supplement. There are plenty of other brands but this one always worked the best for me at a reasonable price.

You say you don’t drink enough water so why not start there and give it a proper go before messing about with cosmetic procedures?

Fillers 100% worked for my jowls and it's lasted over 12 months and counting. Very subtle difference but made massive difference to me.
