I have had my Adidas gym trainers for so long and need to replace them. I wear my trainers for walking and working out at the gym.

I would really appreciate some recommendations. Thanks.

Actually, that piqued my curiosity. In most of the photos I could find, Schwarzenegger lifted weights barefoot unless he was outside. I can't see many modern gyms allowing that!

There are lots of gyms where you'll see people lifting weights wearing socks.

Crikey @ObliviousCoalmine I hope they never drop a weight on their feet!

A lot of lifting shoes (deadlift slippers, barefoot shoes) wouldn't protect your feet if you dropped weight on them anyway!

OP, Something like a reebok Nano is the best all round gym shoe. Nike metcons are popular but AWFUL to run in. However if you're just walking on the treadmill and using machines, not lifting free weights then a running type trainer may be better.

If you lift free weights (barbell, squat, deadlift etc) then running trainers or "squishy" shoes are not good, they don't have the stability and can cause joint issues if used repetitively as the weight increases.

I think it's reasonably the norm. This very morning the guy on the squat rack next to me took his off. I bet his white socks were black on the bottom!

Hokas for running/HIIT, bare feet for lifting, and Lululemon for everything else

Very normal to lift in socks or flat shoes (e.g. Converse, barefoot shoes) , especially deadlift and squat where your form has to be good for going heavier. This is not some wanky gym bro thing, it's critical so you can move correctly and not injure yourself, even (especially!) if you're a portly, middle-aged, late to the gym, woman. Any shoe padding will make you less stable and it's harder to do the adjustments that make you lift well. The biggest risk of dropping a weight is putting the big plates back up on the wall, I'm always worried I'll drop it on my foot! But a shoe won't make any difference if a 15kg plate lands on top of it, it's broken either way.
