What gym trainers are de rigeur at the moment?

head2toeinuniqlo · 16/11/2024 22:30

I have had my Adidas gym trainers for so long and need to replace them. I wear my trainers for walking and working out at the gym.

I would really appreciate some recommendations. Thanks.

This is enlightening. I can't believe some people are worried that 'dirty' shoes might go on the floor of a gym - or a treadmill! God forbid their clean trainers then step on that surface GrinBiscuitBiscuit

I use Nike Metcon for the gym (flat bottomed for deadlifts)

Asics for running (spongier soles)

And a pair of older Nikes for walking/dog walking

I couldn't wear the asics or Nike in gym classes and def couldn't wear the metcons for running or going walks in.

The older nikes would be OK for running as I used them for a while before buying the asics.

My friend wears Hoka for running and loves them.

My PT seems to wear the ON trainers for gym and running?

Hoka trainers are the new Rab jackets where I live.
Seriously, decide on function rather than brand.

I'm wearing a pair of Hoka as we speak. I wear them for walking and they are far and away the most comfortable trainers I have ever worn - and I've tried a lot of brands.

Not sure what that's got to do with my observations.

Our local gym has signs up specifically warning people about the damage dirty shoes can do to machines.

Hmph …

I would not be pleased to know people were using gym equipment dressed in their dirty outdoor trainers …

Weird! How does it effect you physically?

mdinbc · 18/11/2024 01:03

I concur with others that you need to fit your foot and specifically get a shoe for treadmill running. The gait is slightly different from trail or street running, so a different sole is recommended.

And as for strictly 'indoor' shoes, most gyms do not like you to wear outdoor shoes in. The slightest bit of sand/gravel that can stick to the soles of shoes can interfere with machines, and also make the floor a bit slippery. That's where I see a lot of people coming in their slides or crocs, and changing.

Gruelle · 18/11/2024 05:14

See the posts immediately before and after yours, @AnnieSnap …

And that’s in addition to the surely obvious hygiene issues. I wouldn’t want all the shit, blood, and vomit from the streets brought into my home - nor would I want them in an enclosed area where I’m sharing equipment and getting close to the floor other people are walking on. The thought of people coming straight from their dog walk and using the gym equipment in the same footwear …

I wear Reebok classics that I got from Frasers they're so comfortable

Copperoliverbear · 18/11/2024 05:31

I wear hoka I love them, they're so comfortable and have got rid of my plantar fasciitis.

@DieStrassensindimmernass there's a difference between obviously muddy/dirty shoes that leave debris to simply having been worn outside.

Floralsofa · 18/11/2024 05:42

I have Nike Zoom Bella 6, I do weightlifting and cardio/Hyrox type workouts. Swap into lifting shoes for squats, cleans etc.

Have had Reebok Nanos and Nike Metcons in the past, Nanos were ok, Metcons I hated, the Bellas are my favourite.

imip · 18/11/2024 05:49

ASICS gt 2000 and I keep buying the same ones. I use them for treadmill, weights and outdoors (have some more fashionable NB 327 for just walking, but it depends on the colour of my outfit). I am in my 50s have run a lot in the past, have dodgy knees and something going on with my foot also. I mainly only ever wear trainers and I can wear them to work also.

I wear outdoor shoes on the treadmill. I cannot see the problem as I am actually not touching the treadmill (and if I am, we have a problem!).

I couldn’t afford having different trainers for all of this!

Well a quick glance round at my gym last week confirmed that Crocs or Converse seem to be in fashion!

Quite a few pool sliders at my gym too.

Converse are popular for lifting because of their flat base. Crocs, don't ask me; anyone wearing them on the gym floor should be shot for crimes against both fashion and safety.

I wear Nike Metcon Frees for doing weights; On trainers for running. I have a pair of generic proper Nikes for walking and anything in between. Workout trainers are about function.

I think the point is that if shoes have been worn outside at all there could be little stones or other sharp objects that we're not even aware of, yet they could still cause damage to the machines.

Quintette · 18/11/2024 07:05

Just those standard Nike ones.

My petty hate is people who don’t wear trainers because blah blah blah lifting weights. Honestly, you’re not Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Same. I have indoor gym trainers too. Sadly I think I'm one of the few who does.

I have no idea why you hate them but it's better to wear shoes with a non-compressible sole when lifting heavy weights. The complete opposite of what you might need for running on a treadmill.

StuntNun · 18/11/2024 11:07

Actually, that piqued my curiosity. In most of the photos I could find, Schwarzenegger lifted weights barefoot unless he was outside. I can't see many modern gyms allowing that!

AnnieSnap · 18/11/2024 12:06

@mdinbc and @Gruelle I have been a member of many gyms over many decades and I have never seen a sign saying this, nor have I heard of it before!

faustina · 18/11/2024 12:34

I use these on my treadmill and they're the most comfortable I've ever had. You can get the sale colours for half the price. I wear other trainers outside though
