Products for pixie cut?

Arraminta · 14/11/2024 10:12

I have a new pixie cut and it's been cut really well. When I left the salon it looked fabulous, all gamine and artfully dishevelled. But when I try and style it I end up with Lego hair!

What products will give me that choppy definition look. It needs to be idiot proof because I am so shit at styling hair (hence the pixie).

Hair powder id say - got2be does a good one. It creates that super choppy look with lots of hold.

BuzzieLittleBee · 14/11/2024 10:19

I've had a pixie cut for years and have always struggled with product.
I use a Lee Stafford paste, and mix it with a tiny bit of hair oil to make it a bit slacker.
I think there used to be a lot more styling products for short hair - I don't know where they've all gone.

Tigi Bedhead Hair Stick is a wax (but like a stick deodorant) that you brush over the ends for that piecy choppy look.

I like mousse for mine I use a the Paul Mitchell thickener one even though I don't have thin hair 😂

blast with the dryer and then just use hairspray

TheLongRider · 14/11/2024 10:42

Salt spray, to give textured waves and curls rather than soft ones.
Volumizing powder, gives lift to the roots but you only need a tiny amount.
Mousse on damp hair, finger raked through and left to air dry.

You don't have to spend a lot, the Got2Be range is relatively inexpensive. Primark have a volumizing powder for a couple of pounds.

I have wavy hair and I need at least one of the above to keep my pixie looking modern and choppy as opposed to Nicola Sturgeon!

stonkytonk11 · 14/11/2024 10:42

V05 powder, I think just better than the got 2b one

TheLongRider · 14/11/2024 10:44

I don't use a hairdryer, it smooths out my hair too much. Air drying after towel/turban drying gives me a much better result.

Arraminta · 14/11/2024 10:51

Thank you, I'm taking notes! Is it best to not actually blow-dry your hair then before using wax or powder for definition?

Damp hair - mousse or salt spray.
Dry hair - powder or wax

It depends on the product and your hair type. My hair is in the image below. My hair is wavy and I get the best styling results with products on wet/damp hair. I use powders and waxes on dry second or third day hair.

If your hair is straight, you may find drying it first and applying product afterwards gives you the results you want.

Dry hair powder for sure!

emily012 · 14/11/2024 11:05

Try a lightweight texturizing spray or a styling cream! Just scrunch it into your hair for that choppy, tousled look without the effort. And don’t worry, pixie cuts are tricky at first—you’ll get the hang of it!

Iheartmysmart · 14/11/2024 11:07

I use Tigi Small Talk on damp hair and style it with my fingers. When my hair is dry I straighten my fringe as it has a stupid kink in it then use Slick Gorilla styling powder. Wax and styling pastes are too heavy for my ridiculously fine hair.

Arraminta · 14/11/2024 11:22

This is all ridiculously helpful. My hair is thick, but very, very fine and soft. It rebels against being choppy.

Texture spray will give you a bit of grit, I use it on my curly hair as my roots are so soft they just drop!

Cocolapew · 14/11/2024 11:42

Textured /and or volume dry shampoo, Vo5 does the best tins of wax etc I think. I love a wax stick but mine is turning my white hair yellow now I'm not blonde.

The shorter mine is, the more important it is to blow dry it! Otherwise it just dries flat with no shape at all, and is not retrievable with styling products. It only takes 2 mins, but it has to be done. And it has to be washed every day.

I'd say you just need to experiment - there are definitely pixie cut/hair type combos that can just dry naturally with a bit of product and then have something put through it to finish it off. Sadly mine isn't one of them!

Aveda Control paste is what I’ve used for decades. I dry my hair with a blow drier until it’s properly dry then rub this through it, takes moments. My hair is a fraction longer than a pixie cut and has some movement to it.

Arraminta · 14/11/2024 17:19

Why did I ever think a pixie would be easy??? When the stylist dried it, she gave it lots of height at the crown but then flat and defined around my face. I managed to get the root lift at the crown but it dropped quite quickly.

I do have some Aveda Control paste so will dig that out and have a play around. I think I might just have to accept that I'm shit at hair.

I use the salon products by Sebastian, they do last for ages. Craft Clay I think.

TheLongRider · 14/11/2024 17:23

Could you you contact the stylist and ask for styling tips? Usually they're happy to upsell you some products.

INeedEvidenceMum · 14/11/2024 17:29

Sounds like my hair is very similar to yours. I've used V05 hair wax for years to separate and to get the 'choppy' look.

AelitaQueenofMars · 14/11/2024 17:39

I have very fine hair in a pixie-ish cut. I’ve moved away from salt spray to Wella Sugar Lift as it has a bit less ‘crunch’ and more shine. Hair powder is great for extra lift and volume, but lots of them make hair really dull. The Kevin Murphy powder is the best I’ve used.

AelitaQueenofMars · 14/11/2024 17:40

Oh, and a tiny bit of serum on fringe ends!

Cocolapew · 14/11/2024 22:54

I've just gone back to a pixie because I couldn't be bothered styling my shoulder length hair, which looked fine without me doing anything, I now spend 10 minutes every morning fussing about with it 😄
