Do you wear your work clothes out of work?

Started an office job this year and have built up a smart casual office wear wardrobe. Just wondering if people wear some work clothes out of work or keep clothes separate?

Only asking as going to a ceilidh tonight and am wearing a dress I wear to work - it was an out of office dress before I got my job! None of my work colleagues will be at the ceilidh!

Yes- there's a huge cross over. I don't own anything that would be classed as "smart casual office wear".

I mainly wear dresses from brands like Palava, Cabbages & Roses, Oska, Klements, some jackets and skirts from Baum und Pfergarten, Edina Ronay, Eponine , Colenimo and Batsheva. Apart from obviously evening wear or the more outlandish Klements or Eponine dresses I don't distinguish between work /non work/ going out.

I'm on holiday and am wearing a Cabbages and Roses dress today which I've worn it to work. I have 3 Oska dresses with me. I've worn all of them to work

I don't go to the office very much (1 day a week usually) so I don't really differentiate. I probably have clothes I wouldn't wear to the office rather than specific office clothes (eg not going to the office in my flannel comfy trousers but wear those at home with a presentable top, but not necessarily a top I'd wear to the office).

Tarnishedbutton · 09/11/2024 19:31

Yes I do. I would define my required work dress code as smart casual and that is what my outside looks had always been.

Doggymummar · 09/11/2024 19:41

Yes, I don't differentiate, but I do work from home

Octavia64 · 09/11/2024 19:42

Mostly no but the occasional thing.

BoobyDazzler · 09/11/2024 19:42

I don’t really have work clothes, I just have clothes. My office is very casual!

Fireworknight · 09/11/2024 19:44

Mostly no, but occasionally there’ll be a cross-over.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/11/2024 19:45

I'm a teacher and other than a couple of suits, I just have clothes.

Yes exactly. Some of my most casual clothes I wouldn't wear to the office, but everything I wear to the office can be worn outside of the office.

BangFlash · 09/11/2024 19:48

I don't go into the office much. Pre COVID when people do dressed relatively smart I had office clothes, suits, business dresses, fitted shirts and pencil skirts.

Now it's pretty casual, most people are jeans and t-shirts. I can't face looking that casual in a work environment but am more smart casual now. There's nothing I wear in work that I wouldn't wear out, I do have clothes I wouldn't wear to work though.

dudsville · 09/11/2024 20:03

Another one saying I did a wardrobe overhaul in covid. My clothes are all niw things I wear daily and are appropriate for all aspects of my life. Thankfully work is smart casual, so I no longer have clothes I would only wear to work. My dresses go to work, to lunch with friends, and I even waft about at home in them. Life is short. My life is simple. My wardrobe reflects that!

Dobest · 09/11/2024 20:05

As a dustperson, I wear corblimey trousers everywhere.

SocksAndTheCity · 09/11/2024 20:15

I don't, but I have a specific set of clothes for work and I like that when I take them off it means I'm finished.

They are cheap, plain (all black, or almost all) and fairly old; I replace them as they wear out and I don't have to think about them at all. This leaves me a lot of time and money to put into my proper clothes 😊

suburburban · 09/11/2024 20:46

I tend to mix stuff, I keep, some tops for wearing out

I find it better to wear all my clothes otherwise I'd never wear half of the stuff

You must be my twin!

I have a style. I dont have work clothes or home clothes. I just have clothes. Never underdressed (a colleague once said that I could attend a wedding with 0 notice)

A bit quirky- love Klements and Baum plus used to live in Orla Kiely, Maxmara , bit of Cabbages and Roses etc

I work in a highly professional role.

willowstar · 09/11/2024 21:18

I have a distinct work wardrobe. I like that I look smart at work and present a professional me, while at home I am far more casual. I wear dresses and very occasionally long skirts to work with smart boots (at the moment), while at home I am in jeans or cords and jumpers.

I love getting dressed up and don't have much of a social life so if I didn't dress smartly for work I would never really feel smartly dressed. I am really senior NHS management and there is a bit of an expectation that we dress smartly.

Etherealcelestialbeing · 09/11/2024 21:38

I have a work wardrobe. I'm a teacher so have to have clothes that aren't too short, too revealing, too restrictive, no jeans etc. I dont really dress any smarter for work but probably frumpier Grin

I recently slimmed my work wardrobe to a rotation of about 7 outfits as I reckon no one really notices what you wear most of the time.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 09/11/2024 22:26

No - once something has been worn to work I never wear it for not-work again, other than footwear. I’m a lecturer in a creative subject so not smart at work really, mainly black jeans, but I would never wear those jeans outside of work.

mynameiscalypso · 09/11/2024 22:30

I have a total mental block about wearing 'work' clothes at home and vice versa. I assume it stems from the early years of my career when work attire was much more formal. I have some almost duplicate items albeit one I wear and home and one in the office. It's very odd.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/11/2024 00:14

Ha no! I wear scrubs and training shoes , I'd get arrested .

My daughter works in an office and does wear smart/casual depending on where she is so yes wears them outside work .

When I worked, and didn't have a uniform, I made my own work uniform. I rarely wore my "work clothes" out of work as I wanted to keep my two lives separate, and as soon as I retired I gave them away. I did occasionally wear one of my "non work clothes" to work, but not often.

Do you live in a council flat? 😂

No
My work wear is black on black , so I go for anything but on my days off

Pumpkincozynights · 10/11/2024 08:27

We have a dress code for work so no jeans, trainers, joggers etc. so I don’t wear my lounging about clothes.
There are clothes I wear for going out which I wouldn’t wear for work as I consider them too dressy for work. I keep a pair of shoes at work which stay there. I rarely wear my expensive perfume for work, if I do wear anything it’s cheaper body spray type scents. Once I start wearing clothes for work I tend to relegate them as work clothes and don’t really want to wear them for best anymore. I think this stems from my mother, who had defined work clothes. These were always smart clothes and she always wore a pair of court shoes for work.
