I found a nice one in TKMaxx of all places, should have been £150, down to £18. Might be worth a rummage, either in person or online.

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle depending on the university, degree, dress code and age of op I think it might be ok... however my point was to look at KM if she is after a structured dress (and that I personally like the one I linked but have nowhere to wear it!)

Oh come on. Neither of these are in any way suitable for a graduation ceremony regardless of university and/or degree. Have you actually been to a GC?

kindertoPTS · 04/11/2024 16:15

KM is suitable to look at for a GC in my opinion. You don't have to agree with me though. The OP mentioned she wanted a structured maxi dress with long sleeves. It reminded me of a dress I like on KM. I wore a dressy dress for mine and didn't feel out of place at all. My husband works at a university and so I have seen the odd photo of more recent events. This summer lots of students wore strapless dresses.

You obviously feel very strongly about these things- I do not!

Yes this style but longer.

How much longer? Me + Em is generally really long. I’m average height and I have to have everything from there shortened, so if you’re average height that dress is probably ankle length.

owlexpress · 04/11/2024 17:03

Still failing to see what's so outrageous about the Karen Millen dress... Once the gown is on it'll just look like a white midi dress (which is exactly what we were encouraged to wear, a black or white dress). The one shoulder isn't ideal for pinning the hood I suppose.

Octopuscrazy · 04/11/2024 21:49

Thank you so much for all the suggestions. I haven't been able to reply to all you individually but I have looked through all the suggestions.

This is the dress I've ordered. Fingers crossed it arrives on time and fits!

There are two Turkish websites that sell modest clothes that deliver to the UK, Modanisa and Sefamerve. They sell lots of long sleeved maxi dresses including quite smart and evening style ones. You could try those?

Delphigirl · 05/11/2024 10:03

A bit over budget but…

I just bought this from me & em and am really pleased with it, extremely comfortable. I am a 10/12 and bought the 12 and very glad I did, perhaps a bit on the small side. I had lots of complement when I wore (and I don;t get them normally!)

Liking this! Might go for that myself👏👍🏻

The dress you link to is lovely. I’ve been looking for similar - but a dress or skirt in a dark grey to wear with jumper I like. But even the skinny model in this one looks to have bit of a tummy due to the shape. I now have caesarean overhang following menopausal loss of elasticity in skin ( the never ending joys) so my flattish tum is a thing of the past. Is it flowy in tummy area or quite fitted?

EvelynBeatrice · 09/11/2024 10:37

And thanks for good description of the quality. That’s what’s lacking when you buy stuff from an online picture.

I’m the same sort of shape/build as the model, however it’s the type of dress that I wouldn’t feel comfy wearing when I was due on or after a big bowl of pasta 😂
George had lovely dark silvery grey satin maxi skirts in that you may like? And satin slip dresses in the same colour or black, they were beautiful also x
