If my husbands 34waist jeans fit me, what size women's jeans should I buy?

Not bought jeans in years but after weightloss just tried on his.

What would that translate to in women's sizes?

Yes if you’re straight up, and don’t have a definable waist, not if you’re hour glass shape.

I'm not definitely not straight up and down! The standard leg jeans seem to have a bit more space than women's jeans which either won't go over my bum or they do and there's a huge gap all round my waist

Mumuzuzu · 29/10/2024 18:00

You can see I still carry alot of weight on my stomach
Bit it's also alot of skin/overhang.

But I guess that's what happens when you've lost 98lbs

I guess I need to venture into some shops.

If they are vintage levi jeans sizing is different. I wear a W34 in vintage 501s but a W28 in new Levi's.

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 29/10/2024 19:02

Congratulations on the weight loss, that is impressive.

If you can keep fit and stay weight stable, your body will shift about a bit. ie the weight on your tum may be on you bum and thighs in a year.

The jeans look just fine. Remember to thank DH for them.

DrCoconut · 29/10/2024 19:06

I'd estimate 12-14 but yes you need to try on as it varies so much.

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 30/10/2024 09:08

I always though a 34 was a 16, but a 34 doesn't fit me when I'm a 16, I guess because men tend not to have as much as a difference between waist and hips. In your situation I'd try on a few 14s and even 12s in an actual shop before deciding which size is the safest to order.

Jeans have gone a bit weird.
DD is wandering around in brand new jeans with a 8/29 size label on.

Honestly, I often just buy men's jeans now. The sizes are more reliable and the denim is better quality.

I bet they are Abercrombie? I’m a UK 10/12 and after a few try and returns ended up with 29 which are labelled 8, so a UK 12 I think.

OP I agree a 34 is a UK 16 based on current sizing - if you had an actual 34” waist and were wearing jeans that sit on your actual waist. My waist is 29” and I have jeans in 28,29, 30 (usually Levi’s but not vintage) depending on the style. I’m a UK 12 bottom usually.

I find that crazy as all my size 16 trousers and dresses went in the bin months ago.

Seems mad that at 10st5lbs I would still be a 16.

I feel like I'm never going to feel slim :(

Buy a tailors measuring tape, look online at brands you like and their size guide.
Then use your measurements to see which size will suit you best.
I do this for all brands as sizing is so inconsistent now.

I bet you are slim! My point was that if your actual waist on your actual body measures 34” (I’m sure it doesn’t) then that is equivalent to a UK 16. The jeans your husband has are men’s vintage jeans, and a bit of a red herring in terms of current women’s jeans sizing. I don’t weigh myself as it sends me mad but I do have a tailor’s tape measure per pp and use that to check in on myself with.

JackieGoodman · 30/10/2024 19:15

Womens 34inch waist jeans would be a 16 but men's jeans are cut differently, men don't have curves in the same placesGrin
I'm a 12 and I buy mens 32inch waist jeans. My waist isn't 32 inches.
You could be either a 10/12/14 or 16 depending on what shop and fit you buy from. I'd start with trying 12 or 14 (depending on whether you like loose fit or more fitted).

And congrats on weight loss 10st 5 at 5ft 5 is often not appreciated on MN as being particularly slim but in the real world it definitely is 👏

It is compared to the 18st I was at my heaviest
The last time I was 10st5 I was in high-school and I'm mid 40s now!

Same as me and I’m a size 12 in Next jeans, as a ballpark for you. I love their mid rise flares as I can’t do high waisted. I have quite a flat stomach but a fat arse, so I’m hopeful they’ll fit you!

user2848502016 · 30/10/2024 21:01

DH wears 34" jeans and I reckon his would fit me, I'm usually a 14 in jeans. My actual waist measurement is about 32" but am pear shaped.
Men's jeans aren't designed to sit on the actual waist so sizing is a bit different to women's.
Men that fit 34" jeans will usually measure bigger around their actual waist.
If you were a 16 before losing weight I would probably start with ordering 12s and 14s and seeing how you get on.
Variation in women's clothes sizing is insane so it's definitely not an exact science.

RampantIvy · 30/10/2024 21:13

crackofdoom · 29/10/2024 16:03

Yeah, my waist is 32 and I'm mostly a size 12 in jeans (cough vanitysizing).
But men's jeans aren't going to account for the greater tendency of women to be in and outy. Are you attempting to order some online? Because I feel jeans are one of those things you really need to brave the shops for, so you can try a few pairs on.

I agree @crackofdoom
Men's jeans don't fit on my waist because I have a waist and hips. To fit over my hips they would gape at the waist.

I’d guess a 12 then. Exact same dimensions as me!

notnorman · 30/10/2024 21:18

I'm a 12 and 29' in women's Levi's but to be honest they're a teeny bit small. I'm wearing a size 12 next jeans but they're a bit big. The Levi's actually go in at the waist though where the next are the same size from hips to waist so I need to wear a belt.
If you're Apple I think Levi's wouldn't suit cos they're shaped for a slimmer waist.

When I was similar I was in a 12. A 10 was 28 inch, 12 was 30 as others have said.

pecanroll · 30/10/2024 23:16

Probably not overly helpful but at 10st5 (I'm 5ft5) I am usually a 12 unless it's somewhere like Next where 10 is usually fine. I'm under 10st now and in 8s or 10s depending on the shop, though my 12s are still wearable just not as fitted, often with a belt. I don't carry much weight around my tummy/waist though.

FollowingSeas · 30/10/2024 23:17

I wear M&S mens 34" and my womens jeans are a tight 14 and some 16s. I do have a pair of Levi 501 32" and they don't even go up my legs, so I'd say they are a 12 or less.
Mens are much better - pockets that actually fit a phone and thicker vintage style fabric which doesn't go weird in the dryer

Mumuzuzu · 01/11/2024 18:03

I went shopping today and got a pair of high waisted jeans from H&M in a size 12 😁

I took in the 16, 14 and 12 and worked my way down. Lol

OP posts:
NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 01/11/2024 18:24

Well impressed.
H&M are usually considered to come up smaller than many brands.

You will of course like the rest of us end up owning three different sizes of well fitting jeans.

I fully expect that.
The ones in New Look looked much smaller, I was in a rush and only managed to try on one style in H&M.
I think they fact they are high waisted helps
I don't think I could do midrise with the amount of skin I have.

Just check and they're definitely a 12

If my husbands 34waist jeans fit me, what size women's jeans should I buy?
