I did have a look at the website. And there are some reasonably priced pieces I thought. Their wedding bands are very nice. And bracelets.

you would ask them for their best price and not pay the amount on the website. Most second hand jewellers price in a negotiation amount. I haven’t looked that hard but this is an example of what you can find but still have Cartier.

Cartier D'AMOUR Diamond Small Model Rose Gold Pendant Necklace

The bottom line is that the op planned to spend under £1k on a necklace from Cartier. It isn't high value jewellery and it's second hand value will be the weight of the gold and whatever a diamond chipping is worth. It will not hold its value, which will be miniscule for at least about 25 years when it might catch up a bit.

To me it smacks of champagne taste on beer money and I'd recommend spending less and forgetting the brand.

What a scathing, mean-minded response. I can just imagine those pursed lips. If the OP would like some Cartier let her be. Calling it beer money is incredibly catty.

Agree with the above. Carrier will certainly be worth more than scrap pricing, always has been.

Do Cartier use ethical diamonds? I know Tiffany don't.

That’s nice but it’s not like for like as gold vermeil, not solid.

Exactly what I was going to say - it is not the sand at all

OP I love the necklace you're interested in

I perked up when someone mentioned cheaper alternatives but that one isn't gold of course

i often see posters say about using a local jeweller but I'm not sure what that means.

Does it mean to find a designer and isn't that more expensive?

my local jeweller sells pricey things and the Hot Diamonds brand. I'd like to buy myself a necklace like this but I don't know what a normal price would be.

hope that's not hijacking the thread, OP maybe you'll get some more suggestions too.

If you want Hot Diamonds ,there's lots of Vinted,I've bought a couple of necklaces.

OP will never get her money back. not sure if it’s the same style but looks similar.

it’s not scrap is it but it’s half the price?

so approx 50% of the value is being used for branding, marketing, hot air.

if the OP went direct to a goldsmith for the same thing, the resale value may well be higher.

as someone who’s worked very hard for my cash, I don’t want to be ripped off and luxury pieces should be an investment not a loss making venture.

Pardon our interruption...

I do find the replies on this thread very depressing - not everything is about making money back. Who would really be interested in buying a second hand bespoke piece over a Cartier, especially something as simple as the OP wants? Who can bothered with the faff of finding jewellers and stones blah blah to essentially get a copy of something else? Buy the Cartier and enjoy it

Obeseandashamed · 03/11/2024 13:22

Just came across the necklace you're looking at in the small size for £990 in one of the luxury Facebook groups I'm in. If you're set on Cartier, definitely consider second hand x

Thank you I think £990 is a bit too high if I’m going to look at second hand I wouldn’t pay over £900 but I’ll definitely keep an eye out and see if a perfect second hand one comes up

Obeseandashamed · 03/11/2024 17:45

@Libertydestiny That's fair enough! RRP for the small in yellow gold is £1400ish so I thought it was a good deal for something that had only been tried on x

Libertydestiny · 03/11/2024 18:18

Ok the one I’m looking at is £1290 so I’ll keep looking and if I find it second hand I would consider thank you

UnashamedLabelHo · 03/11/2024 18:47

Remember to negotiate the price of second hand. Luckily gold and diamonds is resilient - not like buying second hand clothes at vast expense and finding a stain but always offer 15% less and try to pay direct rather than through a platform that would take a fee from the vendor’s profit. They will likely compromise at a 10% discount.
