I bought a similar necklace from an independent jeweller for my daughter and almost got double the carat for the money as paying for the diamond and the gold rather than the name.
I would explore a bit further unless you really want it to be Cartier.

Have you looked at Bvlgari?

Go see a local jeweller and get one made, better yet, go to a diamond dealer in one of the big cities and they will be able to help you. Just show them a picture of the one you like. You'll get a better diamond for your money.

It's also worth looking at online pawn brokers and the diamond dealers on Hatton Garden as they'll all offer similar - the Cartier necklace is a fairly standard style.

I bought my stones for engagement ring online in lockdown, had a brilliant local jeweller make me the most amazing ring - must have cost like £3-4k but if I bought the finished ring from a jeweller, easily would have cost £20k.

Do the ground work of what you want and then find a goldsmith. if you want one in the south of england, i can recommend mine - Alex Greenwood of Greenwood Goldsmiths

£629, 18k, 0.2ct

It goes up to £1,159 for the whitest, clearest natural diamond; there are several price points in between.

Slightly different pendant attachment. I saw one with a threaded attachment last week, will keep looking.

The bottom line is that the op planned to spend under £1k on a necklace from Cartier. It isn't high value jewellery and it's second hand value will be the weight of the gold and whatever a diamond chipping is worth. It will not hold its value, which will be miniscule for at least about 25 years when it might catch up a bit.

To me it smacks of champagne taste on beer money and I'd recommend spending less and forgetting the brand.

AdoraBell · 30/10/2024 17:16

The vermeil one in the link to Monica Vinadet isn’t solid gold. Vermeil is a type of plating, thicker than standard gold plate, but still a plated chain.

LadyGabriella · 30/10/2024 17:17

It’s like Tiffany’s jewellery. Massive mark up relative to value of the actual jewellery. Maybe Cartier is different, I’m not completely sure- but Tiffany’s is definitely a massive waste of money.

this one is pretty and 0.25 carats! Much better value. Granted it’s 14k not 18 but when is the last time you asked anybody to prove the gold in their jewellery? Might be harder wearing too.
Don’t forget to add import duty from US

Some really nice ones there think I do need to think on it . Just unsure if I’d be happy with a different one or my heart is set on the Cartier if you get what I mean

I understand what you mean, the branding is part of it. I know you said there’s no stores near you, but if you do decide to go for it do try and see it in person, the shopping experience is such fun and you get a tasty glass of Cartier champagne.

We bought one of our DD’s the earrings for a 21st and the matching necklace for graduation. No diamond jewellery has excellent resale value in all honesty but a brand like Cartier does - and it is lovely to hand down to the next gen. Make sure you keep the receipt and the box.

Make an appointment at the Bond Street store and enjoy the shopping experience (they’ll bring out the champers). Yes, you might save a couple of quid somewhere else but if you want a film star moment, have it - they are very good at that ;-)

QuintessentialDragon · 30/10/2024 18:38

Get the Cartier one.

One thing's for sure: if I was going for Cartier, I sure as hell wouldn't be happy with some vermeil thing from Monica Vinader . It's like replacing steak with a frozen Tesco value 45% beef burger.

It's not the same at all and you'll regret it.

nam3c4ang3 · 30/10/2024 18:47

It's sweet looking but not many people will know its Cartier - its not iconic, like their love bracelets etc - but you are paying for the name really, which is fine if thats what you want. I get it, it's Cartier. If you have the money to spare, then thats your good fortune.

downwindofyou · 30/10/2024 19:03

I haven't looked to check prices but maybe Tiffany diamonds by the yard single diamond necklace is a little cheaper. No idea but worth checking like for like size wise

Fellran · 30/10/2024 19:19

OP, I'm a metalsmith and stone setter. This is such a pretty design, but a relatively simple one for a goldsmith.

I agree with pp who suggested going to a diamond dealer (in person, there are lots around) after doing a bit of research into the stone you want, and asking a goldsmith to create the setting you want.

OR (and this would definitely be my preferred option) go directly to a goldsmith and show them what you want, and let them buy the diamond (they'll give you the gem certificate) and set it.

Honestly, the quality will be wonderful, and it will be uniquely yours. I'm not touting for business btw - my books are closed until next year!

Barney16 · 30/10/2024 19:21

To get the most for your money buy the diamond from a dealer and then find a jeweller that makes jewellery and ask them to make a necklace up for you. Sounds like a massive faff I know but you will get good value and it's unique, it's your piece. Btw I have a Monica Vinader bracelet and the stone is tiny, don't go for that.

Fellran · 30/10/2024 19:21

P.s. I'm a huge fan of this type of setting as opposed to claw settings. It's a lovely choice.

ForPearlViper · 29/10/2024 21:51

I couldn't agree more. You are putting your money into a brand name - and one that has been somewhat devalued in recent years.

You could put your money into the weight of precious metal and quality stones instead and get a really decent piece for your money.

What evidence of devaluation do you have? All of my pieces have significantly increased in value and only a few years, and could certainly be sold for more than i bought them.

I have seen it. The xs and s are very small, with very little differences between the two. It is entry level Cartier, and if i were you i would buy something elsewhere as you will get more for your money. Or alternatively i would save for longer and get something more significant from Cartier, where there are some lovely items to be had
