Holiday clothes for DH...some advice please!

runnyhabbit · 25/04/2008 11:33

We're off to Majorca in a few weeks, and dh has next to no holiday clothes. (first time we've done the summer holiday thing)
He's got swim shorts, and a few t-shirts, but no other "holiday" clothes iyswim.

Dh is 6'4", slim with broad shoulders.

Any thoughts?

What's his normal style, for everyday British weather? Is it casual? Is he a tee-shirt man, or could he be persuaded into a light summer shirt? Ditto for bottoms. Will he feel better in shorts or some sort of light trouser? My husband can never get his head around sandals, so wears very light Converse -style shoes on holiday. It's important that he doesn't buy a summer wardrobe that makes him feel like a prat!

MrsBadger · 25/04/2008 11:45

DH is strapping rather than slim, so this may not apply, but he wears longish linen or cotton shorts, and shirts rather than tshirts - much comfier when really hot, also easier to chuck on by the pool and smarter for dinner etc with a pair of trous.

this kind of look but with less poncey hair.

Gap is a good source.

runnyhabbit · 25/04/2008 11:48

Well, even he admitted that he's need a pir of flipflops for around the pool, so when he saw a pair he liked, I got them

Generally, he spends his time in t-shirts, jeans and trainers. Would quite happily wear a short sleeve shirt (as long as its soft material, iyswim) Will not go near linen trousers etc. (tbh I know they're not him)

Totally agree that he should wear clothes that he feels comfortable in, but sometimes I think its a confidence thing as well, iyswim. He did have a pair of 3/4 trouser/shorts that he used to wear around the house in the summer, and always commented how much cooler they felt instead of jeans

I like that MrsB

Funnily enough, we were in Gap the other week, and bought quite a few good tops.

Dh has got a fab figure, and could carry off so many clothes.

I think I'm going to have to go and buy a load of clothes for him to try on at home.

MrsBadger · 25/04/2008 11:53

oh I am no use to you - dh does not do jeans, tshirts or shortsleeved shirts. Or 3/4 trous. Or trainers. I think they are at opposite ends of the style spectrum.

In which case, try Debenhams because dh can never find anything he likes in there and complains it's all cut too slim .

runnyhabbit · 25/04/2008 11:56

lol MrsB will try Debenhams though

(though I think that secretly dh would like to get out of his jeans)

My dh is 6'3" with broad shoulders but slim-ish. I find that Fat Face stuff fits him really nicely and it's nice stuff. Also Gap and Boden.

notnowbernard · 25/04/2008 12:04

Dp likes Gap and Fatface

NorthernLurker · 25/04/2008 12:07

I'm trying to persuade my dh into 3/4 length trousers.
I was in M&S last week and thought they had some decent stuff. Don't forget a hat!

JolieGirl · 25/04/2008 12:07

Look at Gant or Crew - classic stuff, probably a but more expensive than Gap etc but great quality

JolieGirl · 25/04/2008 12:08

bit not but obv...!

runnyhabbit · 25/04/2008 12:08

Good point about the hat

So far then, I shall be shopping in Gap, Boden, Fatface and M&S

OP posts:
runnyhabbit · 25/04/2008 12:09

Don't mind spending a bit if they are good quality, and won't go out of date

DS always takes one pair of jeans on hols, one pair of linen trousers, one fine knit jumper, at least one short sleeve shirt and lots of flip flops, sandals (Birkenstocks), t-shirts and shorts.

runnyhabbit · 25/04/2008 12:11

but dh will not do linen trousers, or birkenstocks

he'd look fab in them though.....

really need to feed the boys (ds2 has started eating a book)

will be back later

MrsBadger · 25/04/2008 12:15

Crew too rah, even for DH (and that's saying something)

probably ok if you actually sail

Sunshinemummy · 25/04/2008 12:15

Well his trousers and Birkies are his smarter evening wear so I'm sure there are some substitutes you could find if you think you might need them.

NorthernLurker · 25/04/2008 12:15

what about this sort of thing

janeite · 25/04/2008 17:19

Your dh sounds the same shape as my dp (although dp is "only" 6'1"). He gets most of his clothes in Gap and Monsoon. He got a pair of cropped trousers in an outdoorsy shop though and they look lovely on him. Those trousers that Northern posted look comfy too and are very cheap, if he'd only wear them for holiday.

runnyhabbit · 25/04/2008 17:19

I like that NL

runnyhabbit · 25/04/2008 17:22

Funny you should mention an outdoorsy style shop. He wears combats for work (he's an engineer so needs lots of pockets) from Cotswold, and has also got a few other bits from there.(plus I know which size to get him, and he'll know they're comfy)

thanks so much for all your help

(I love MN)

My local Esprit has started stocking menswear, dh has had a couple of nice t-shirts from there recently.

If you are anywhere near Lakeside, try Decathlon. It is a massive sportshop, what I would term a "proper" sportshop not like SportsWorld/Soccer or JJB. They have some nice menswear (3/4 length shorts etc).

runnyhabbit · 25/04/2008 18:04

Unfortunately, I'm no where near Lakeside (I'm in South Wales) Know what you mean about going to a decent sports shop though.

Have had some great ideas though, and dh is rather impressed with your help

We vote the cargo long shorts (plus or minus pockets on the thigh) and a shirt with sleeves rolled up / t-shirt. Try birkenstock sandals if flip flops don't appeal - dead sexy, cool and comfy.

Then if you want to posh it up in the evening but still be casual - white shirt rolled up sleeves, jeans and birkenstocks - he won't need to take any other shoes with him at all.
