If you had £200 to spend on flat boots this winter...

... what would you be buying?

Having received a bonus from work I've decided it's time to upgrade my flat black winter boots.

Requirements as follows;

  • Black or Brown.
  • Leather.
  • Ankle or mid-calf length.
  • Flat as they're for practicality and walking rather than being dressy, but wouldn't hurt if they looked nice enough for a pub lunch.
  • Easy to put on and take off as I'm often juggling a baby (my current boots have both a zip and laces that both need doing everytime and that life is no longer for me).
  • Budget of up to £200.
  • Somewhat stylish.
  • I would prefer to be able to try on / at least return in store, so high street store over online only / international brand if possible.

Thanks in advance!

Women's Footwear Collection | Grenson

I love the sneaker 51 but the ones I like are sold out. I do not love the site, I'm finding it unusable.

I’ve bought a pair of Sam Edelman laguna Chelsea boots in the black leather this year. It’s an American brand I think, I saw them styled on a blog and loved them so went for it. I’ve only had them for a couple of months but they look really smart, are comfy and good quality. They’re waterproof too, so good if you want something for walking. They’re flat, and pull on so no zips. I’ve had a look and John Lewis stock them if you have one of those near you (or failing that could you have them click and collected to a Waitrose branch maybe?)

Thank you all. I've looked at them all and kept browsing myself and think I've narrowed down styles to either a derby style boot or a taller Chelsea boot.

At least when I go looking in person I can zero in on those styles now.

I'm quite taken by these too, and have another (two; I am also a caterpillar) pair of Reiker so not as nervous ordering online as I'm more confident in sizing. Thoughts?

Edited

I like those too. It's worth check out Gabor biker boots too https://www.gaborshoes.co.uk/womens-c1/boots-c3/biker-boots-c77

@pushingtheapplecart , I like those!

Iheartmysmart · 25/10/2024 21:37

I’ve just bought these from Solovair. Wore them out for the first time today and they haven’t rubbed at all. Unusual for me as I have pathetic feet. Beautifully made and look like they’ll last for ever.

OP have a look at Hotter - they do some nice boots that are really comfortable - and the best ones have a Gortex lining which means they are waterproof despite looking like normal ankle boots and having decent comfy soles.
They also have some that are similar but waterproof (not sure what the difference is between the gotext ones and the plain old 'waterproof' ones are given they are both waterproof!
There are also some that look a bit more biker boot-ish and some that are more traditional hiking boot style - again all waterproof.
Makes a massive difference to keeping your feet warm and dry and you don't need to worry about damaging your boots if it's very wet when you wear them out.

Meant t o add that I've had several pairs of these over the years - they wear well, are really comfortable and look good. Highly recommend them as an everyday boot for the winter without looking like you're wearing heavy rugged boots.

I want these. I've sent a link to DW but I doubt she'll take the hint. www.bluebanana.com/en_GB/products/dr-martens-decayed-roses-leather-1460-black-boots

I have these, they are lovely. Comfortable straight out of the box, didn't need any breaking in.

I have Dr Martens (many styles, I love boots & trainers 🙈), Solovair derby in oxblood brilliant quality and didn't need breaking in, Grenson Nanette very soft, lightweight & comfortable however I never wear them so going to sell them.

I fancy a pair of 11 eye black Solovair boots, but I don't actually need them.

The removable insoles on some models are also really useful if you need orthotic inserts or prefer a different footbed.

@JustJazzy , are the Grensons quite long for the size?

I find mine are but I should if bought a 5.5 not a 6 so they are a bit big and I have really skinny ankles and legs.

I will say though they are very comfortable and the softest leather, I would buy them again but In a 5.5.
I'm a 6 in Adidas and Converse, a 5.5 in vans, a 5 or 6 in Dr Martens depending on the style of boot.

I always link to these as they're incredibly comfortable and look good in real life. I have them in Brandy and Arcill. I appreciate you wanted high street possibilities but thought I'd post to add to the ideas:

Have you got any knee length boots from Pikolinos?

KirstenBlest · 26/10/2024 11:13

Thanks @JustJazzy , I have some Grensons but as they're narrow I can't tell, and I was wondering whether or not to start wearing them or sell them.

I was wondering whether you had tried the knee length ones to be able to tell if they're comfortable. I have a shop in my city, but I can spend 200 without knowing if they're comfy or not. I have some Chelsea boots from there and, while I'm impressed with how they hold water, I don't find them so comfortable.

KirstenBlest · 27/10/2024 13:58

@Gwenhwyfar , I have some mules and some shoes (Jerez). The mules are comfortable but the Jerez a bit too flat for me. They are comfortable in the way that slippers are but I wouldn't want to walk far in them because they don't have enough arch support for my feet.
Can't help with the knee-length boots.

KirstenBlest · 27/10/2024 20:52

@Gwenhwyfar , you're probably better off getting the knee-length boots from a brand you have previously found comfortable.
Sorry to not have been much help and despite my shoe habit, I only have one pair of knee-length ones and I never wear them.

Love the Barebacks listed up thread.

My rec also Panama Jacks, if you have a local independent quality shoe shop they should have them. Size up by half a size, they are a bit small.

Omg they're gorgeous

PickAChew · 27/10/2024 23:38

Is it just me who gets irritated by online shoe or boot listings that don't have a view from above or below so you can get an idea of the overall shape and width?

QueSyrahSyrah · 28/10/2024 17:12

Thank you all for the input, genuinely. After much looking and weighing up I've decided that sticking to what you know doesn't hurt when ordering shoes online so I've gone for two pairs from Reiker where I know I'm a 6 (I can be anything from a 6 to an 8 depending on brand and style).

One smartish black, one more casual brown, and a good bit of change from my £200. Happy with that.

Hi Gwenhwyfar - no I haven't as I'm more of an ankle boot bod. Let me know if you do, though, and what they're like.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 28/10/2024 17:35

I’ve just bought a green mid-calf pair from Celtic & Co. Comfortable, and I love them. As do my three young adult DDs.

I consider it a bonus that my mum loathes them. That streak of teenage rebellion never leaves you.

KirstenBlest · 28/10/2024 17:45

@Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies , I've got some mid calf brightish blue suede boots that I got persuaded to buy in charity shop (£3! and in good nick). I get comments every time I wear them.

The brown biker ankle boots are rather nice.

@KirstenBlest I am very jealous.
