If you had £200 to spend on flat boots this winter...

... what would you be buying?

Having received a bonus from work I've decided it's time to upgrade my flat black winter boots.

Requirements as follows;

  • Black or Brown.
  • Leather.
  • Ankle or mid-calf length.
  • Flat as they're for practicality and walking rather than being dressy, but wouldn't hurt if they looked nice enough for a pub lunch.
  • Easy to put on and take off as I'm often juggling a baby (my current boots have both a zip and laces that both need doing everytime and that life is no longer for me).
  • Budget of up to £200.
  • Somewhat stylish.
  • I would prefer to be able to try on / at least return in store, so high street store over online only / international brand if possible.

Thanks in advance!

Birkenstock boots. Just waiting for the next sales ...

User999990011 · 23/10/2024 20:30

I always link these as they are my favourites

Rita boots

sorry they are online though and international!

CheeseWisely · 23/10/2024 20:34

Thank you!

They are beautiful @User999990011, but it's just as well following their advice to size up half a size takes me to the only size that's sold out 🤭

User999990011 · 24/10/2024 02:18

@CheeseWisely - I find them true to size.
so no need to size up.

they sell the brand at oliver bonas (not the style) but you could try on for size. Also if you live in London - made the edit have the brand there for trying (not in black though sadly)

Bailiwitch · 24/10/2024 06:17

Lanx Take your pick.

Penelope Chilvers Also in black.

YMC Also in brown.

Grenson Anything in the sale..

(NB - your ‘in store’ preference may not be unreasonable but probably won’t get you the best value for your money.)

CheeseWisely · 24/10/2024 07:41

Thanks @Bailiwitch. I appreciate that but we don't live on the UK mainland so online can be a massive and potentially costly hassle. There's a good amount of retailers just won't deliver to us in the first place.

I'll go have a look in town when I get a chance but seeking inspiration first so I know the kind of thing I'm looking for when I get there otherwise I'm likely to get decision paralysis and go home empty-handed. I very much like the Penelope Chilvers ones and some of the Lanx styles.

I always link to these as they're incredibly comfortable and look good in real life. I have them in Brandy and Arcill. I appreciate you wanted high street possibilities but thought I'd post to add to the ideas:

I don't like the Rita boots. They're OK but there's no way I'd spend £200 on them and they don't look spendy.

I have NPS Solovair | Womens Boots, Shoes & Loafers | Made in England – Tagged "Monkey-Boot" – NPS Solovair UK and I love them

I also have Grensons and lots of other solovairs and other boots. I think I was a centipede in a previous life.

owlexpress · 24/10/2024 12:19

Your requirements are really reasonable, so there are a lot of options. I'd go for

M& S - Wide Fit Leather Chelsea Ankle Boots | M&S Collection | M&S (marksandspencer.com)

or

Barbour - Womens Black Barbour Evie Chelsea Boots | schuh

Same here, I always think they look a bit Primark

TomatoSandwiches · 24/10/2024 15:55

These, they also do an ankle boot, not sure if they're flat enough for you though but very comfortable.

I've heard good reports about Barbour boots.

I don't like padding on the Timberland boots pp but they have some others that I find appealing.

I’ve had my eye on these since last winter! It says there is stock in my local Schuh, they might be in one near you?

CheeseWisely · 24/10/2024 16:04

Thank you all. I've looked at them all and kept browsing myself and think I've narrowed down styles to either a derby style boot or a taller Chelsea boot.

At least when I go looking in person I can zero in on those styles now.

I'm quite taken by these too, and have another (two; I am also a caterpillar) pair of Reiker so not as nervous ordering online as I'm more confident in sizing. Thoughts?

KirstenBlest · 24/10/2024 16:19

@CheeseWisely , I'm not keen on the silver bits but that's me. Otherwise, I like them.

KirstenBlest · 24/10/2024 16:42

There are some nice boots on that site. I like the brown Barbour Evies...

I've just bought these from office. I have a huge "fat calves" problem so lots of boots don't fit me but these are fine. They do need to be broken into a bit and maybe a bit longer than youre after.

PickAChew · 24/10/2024 16:59

I would probably still have that £200 in the Spring. I have blooming awkward feet. (and boots that are wearing out)

OliveHenry · 24/10/2024 17:30

I really like the Clark's Rebelle boots, which come in either ankle, calf or knee height. They're quite chunky though!

CheeseWisely · 24/10/2024 17:39

Oooh I do like those @OliveHenry. Sadly our local Clark's closed down a couple of months ago but they might be worth the faff of a return.

MaidOfAle · 24/10/2024 21:33

Hotter Whisper. I have these in green suede from a few years back and they are ❤

GettingStuffed · 24/10/2024 22:33

If you have access to an M&S they've a good selection of boots
