Cannot make head nor tail of what colours I am....

Hi All, I have looked and done the questions on line and the like but still dont know what are my colours! Can anybody help please or am I being really dim with those online sites.

Im quite pale, natural ash/light long blond hair, green eyes, blue to light green veins, prob a bit paler as I live overseas but wear factor 50 on face and arms, rest of me never sees the light of day (wear rash vests etc in pools, I do tan if not covered up).

Im in the UK for a few months and need some winter clothing, jumpers, trousers etc. I do tend to lean towards very bright clothes, mix of plain and patterned I dont shy away from colour at all.

Oh and I'm 58! Any suggestions please🤔

I do agree that people have colours that suit them, but the quizzes never work for me. I’ve got light brown hair, grey-green eyes and skin that tans easily but is quite fair underneath, greenish/neutral veins. I suit deep blues, reds, greens, pinks, but nothing pastel even in those colours, yet all the colour guides say if you have low contrast colouring you should suit pastels, so they’re all wrong. If you get a load of different colours out of your wardrobe and hold them up to your face in daylight, what looks good?

Sounds like you could be a light spring

zebranotzeebra · 17/10/2024 19:25

I'd recommend Style me Happy on Instagram. She has a paid colour analysis service but her free content is helpful as a guide/starting point.

GinJarRogers · 17/10/2024 19:27

I think some people are very obviously a particular season - eg those with dark hair, blue eyes and pale skin = winter, red hair and green eyes = autumn. But for others who have more muted/neutral colouring it’s much harder to see. I fall into the latter group - I have mousy hair and hazel eyes and skin that tans. I’m not particularly pale or dark and medium contrast so very neutral looking. I now see that I suit a lot of autumn colours but definitely not all of them- I can’t wear camel, beige or very warm browns for example.
Anyway, if you don’t fall obviously into one category it can be confusing but I think start with a few colours that you know suit you (you feel good in and get complimented on) and go from there.

I don't get this colours thing at all. I couldn't answer most of the Kettlewell quiz so ended up clicking randomly but it's just a way to make you sign up for their not very interesting website.

It's not a phenomenon I notice on anyone- I look at the item of clothing- do I love it or hate it? I can't think I've ever thought "oh that colour makes you look ill/dead/ glowing".

If you get a load of different colours out of your wardrobe and hold them up to your face in daylight, what looks good?

All my clothes look good- I wouldn't buy them if I didn't think they looked good, but again, it's the cut of the jacket, or the flounce of the skirt. Colour is important obviously, I have to like the colour, but it makes no difference whether it's "my colour" (whatever that might be)

Garlicbest · 17/10/2024 19:40

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 14/10/2024 20:02

The Kettlewell "quiz" is definitely nonsense.

Having just done it, I concur 😂 Which stereotype do you fit? Which of these vaguely similar colour combinations do you like? Which stereotype do you fit again (and again)? My answer to all the questions would've been none, both, or don't care, had they been allowed.

I'm all in favour of just buy what you like! If a colour doesn't seem to suit, try changing your makeup or accessories. Works every time.

Abracadabra1 · 17/10/2024 19:40

As above, style me happy is fabulous.

Just had a scroll through. Got to say I don't think she looks that special - and her before/after shots all seem to involve dyeing the client's hair and putting her in makeup 😕 Give any knackered, depressed woman a cut & colour and a professional slap job, she's going to feel revived! I was expecting to see lots of Ms Averages looking amazing thanks to a newly-coloured wardrobe. Didn't happen.

I am very grateful for this thread! It's finally killed off the nagging feeling that I "should" get my colours done.

Hmmmm she doesn’t do hair. She does colours and clothes. Are you looking at the right page?

Indeed. How do " your colours" work given that so many women still get married in white from neck to toe?

WorriedRelative · 17/10/2024 20:06

I would second style me happy.

For those commenting on the before and after shots, she doesn't do any styling, just advises on colours and shapes. It depends what the client does next, but there are some amazing ones in the Facebook group.

Garlicbest · 17/10/2024 20:06

Oh, @Sorbiecorner, it was the first Google result! Emily Innes.

Just seen there are some others called Style Me Happy. Will take a look (I'm procrastinating, as usual).

Bodeganights · 17/10/2024 20:13

Floisme · 17/10/2024 15:54

I don't think it's entirely nonsense - I definitely prefer how I look in certain colours (or rather certain shades of certain colours). But it's just my opinion and, while there was a time when I took it far more seriously, I no longer believe there's anything underpinning it. The fact that I can't see it in other people confirms that view for me.

Even if I'm wrong and it really is some kind universal wisdom, I get dressed for my own enjoyment, not anyone else's so I'd rather pick colours that please me rather than other people.

I've watched videos of people having their colours done, and I'm truly astounded when they say things like "ooh that colour pops on you" or "you look washed out in that one" I cant see the difference. Then I saw the same people wearing the colours that allegedly made them washed out, so it seems like a swizz to me.

Thought it was just me being blind or stupid.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 17/10/2024 21:35

Maybe people can be so neutral that they look good in all colours. I can see it on me, and on some other people. I looked at my colleague today who was wearing orange and looked amazing, but the other colleague I see the most I’ve never noticed any difference - though she’s got a really drab wardrobe generally so maybe that’s why. Also, I think some people really suit black, or white, so if you did it would be easy to build a wardrobe without realising that for others it’s harder.

Several of the before looked better than the after.

Her own style is very "I got this at Tu, it's very comfy and washes well"

ThePoetsWife · 18/10/2024 07:47

Probably not a winter. Which means no black.

ThePoetsWife · 18/10/2024 07:56

Indeed. How do " your colours" work given that so many women still get married in white from neck to toe?

They probably have to get fake tanned to look good.

Wedding dresses come in off white, ivory, cream etc so there is something for everyone - I can only do pure white as cream makes me look ill

Colours are important but so is style and fit (as well as hair and makeup) all of which can go a long way in mitigating wearing the wrong colours.

This article from a famous old-established USA women's magazine might be helpful. It explains the principles behind chosing colours that suit. It's also calm and fairly rational. https://www.womansday.com/style/beauty/a60789130/season-color-analysis-guide/

This website, also from the USA, is very complicated indeed, but has some useful photos showing how (in the website creator's opinion) some colours really do - or don't - flatter certain celebrities. This is the 'light spring' webpage on it, for example:
https://www.truth-is-beauty.com/light-spring-celebrities.html

and the light summer one:
https://www.truth-is-beauty.com/light-summer-celebrities.html

(previous posters have suggested that you might fit into one of those categories).

And this is a webpage that shows some differences between light spring and light summer colours : https://www.truth-is-beauty.com/blog/six-colors-that-distinguish-light-summer-from-light-spring

I felt like I was the only woman on MN mystified by colours, so I’m pleased to read this. I do know that I don’t suit white or coral, or pastels, and that I hate cobalt blue, which may mean I am Cool rather than Warm. I have grey( was brown) hair, pale skin( dont tan) and blue eyes.

Cobalt blue and white are cool colours

Towerofsong · 18/10/2024 22:33

Put something cream near your face /around your neck, and then something white.

One of them will really brighten you up.

If it's cream, you are warm
If white, you are cool

Spring /autumn is warm.
Summer /winter is cold.

Then decide what depth of colours you can wear in cold or warm tones.
Autumn and winter are deeper colours than Spring and summer.

Giraff3 · 18/10/2024 22:43

I had my colours done recently by styled.by.susie on insta.

I have ash blonde hair, pale, blue veins, green/grey eyes and im a summer.

I always thought i was a winter as electric blue and bright colours make me pop. But i actually suit the light pinks, light purples, teal, navy, grey ect better.

Id love to be an autumn. But those colours dont suit me at all

weareallcats · 18/10/2024 22:46

I’m autumn - neutral undertone that leans slightly warm, olive green eyes, mousy hair with a reddish tone, turquoise veins. I look dead in white, blue and grey and glow in brown. It’s not obvious though and lots of people would say I’m a summer from a quick glance - it’s best to have a professional analysis if you can.

ForPearlViper · 18/10/2024 22:59

I have a problem when they ask the question about sun tanning. I am work house white skinned, dark haired with pale eyes from a long line on either side of pale skinned red-head. But I don't sunburn easily and will get tanned - albeit it slowly.

I've often done the colours quizzes for fun and none of the categories or sub-categories or sub-sub-categories quite fit me. Every one that is suggested includes colours that I would like I was embalmed if I wore it.

But I know my own colours from experience. It is largely due to the undertone and not the colour itself - any really crisp colour or colour with a blueish undertone is fine. Oddly the colour that always comes up in my don't wear categories is a coral shade. I picked up a sweater in that shade some years ago and am still wearing it because someone always comment on how well I look when I wear it.
