What are "apartment pants" like

I keep seeing adverts for these 'apartment pants' on social media, from Saint and Sofia. I see them so much that I assume the company is genuine, unlike some of the FB ones! Does anyone have them? Are they as good as they sound?

I'm looking for plain black, straight leg, slight stretch, with side pockets, trousers that are smarter than jeans that I could wear to work (teaching) - like smartish trousers but without the crease/seam down the front or any pleats, not wool like suiting or anything reall smart. I don't care if they are pull on or button/zip.

The 'apartment pants' sound quite good, but then they say they are as comfortable as leggings, and that makes me think that they are actually the soft brushed cotton style that is too unstructured and doesn't look smart, especially after the first wear or two - it looks like leggings/PJs. Are these that sort of fabric? Or are they the sort of normal cotton/poly fabric that looks like normal trousers, if that makes sense - sort of woven fabric that's smooth.

I thought I'd found some with these Hobbs ones, but despite the photo looking OK, they were way too wide-legged for me (I am short and around a 16, and tend to wear slightly baggy tops and tunics to hide behind, and with wide-legged trousers, it kind of adds to the tent feeling!).

So something a bit straighter would be good. I have jeggings, which are OK shape wise, but they do just look like jeans with the pockets and detailing, and I need something a bit smarter/plainer than that.

So are apartment pants worth a punt?
(I tried that other company that advertises on FB a lot, somewhere from Sweden I think? but they didn't fit me at all and I had to return them, so I am still looking - I might be quite hard to fit! Something UK based would be better).

Ponte has the disadvantage of pilling and plucking like a bastard, though this is only apparent when wearing a cross-body bag, which if you're at home, you wouldn't do.

hazelnutlatte · 14/10/2024 09:11

I have them- though didn't pay anything like the prices they are asking for now!
They are made of a Jersey type material, more like joggers than trousers. They do look smarter than joggers because of the shape of the legs, but they are still pretty casual.

Neodymium · 14/10/2024 09:12

😂 I thought apartment pants was just something that they made up on friends when Rachel’s sister came to stay and she called them ‘don’t you want to rent me an apartment pants’ and then phoebe pretended they were hers and called them apartment pants to Rachel.

YesIReallyDidOK · 14/10/2024 09:12

I believe they pair well with an I Need A Job Sweater, if that helps

Me too, I didn't realise that some enterprising person had actually taken the phrase and used it!

Fizzadora · 14/10/2024 09:14

Ponte fabric is like a thick jersey and can be very comfortable and flattering as long as it's not too tight. It feels quite pulled together.
I'm struggling to find some straight leg trousers just now. They all seem to be either skinny leggings type or very wide or flared leg so not really flattering at 5'3".
The M&S straight leg jersey are perfect and wash and wear well but there are barely any sizes in stock right now. The short leg just sits nicely on top of trainers so I might have to order longer ones and take them up.

Well Rachel did then say she told her bosses at Ralph Lauren and they loved the idea 😂

M&S has a pair of sweatpants I saw yesterday in navy, with a rigid seam down the front. I think dressed with a woolen jumper or a decent shirt they would definitely read as trousers not joggers.
They were in the sports section of a local small store, I think about £25?
Not ponte fabric but heavy enough weight to them to hang decently.

Hoppinggreen · 14/10/2024 09:17

I have some from saint and sofia as well as a few other things. They are good with trainers but also with boots etc to be a bit smarter
The quality is ok but not great value for money if thats what you are after. The company has had a slagging off on here for customer service but I have never had an issue, I think the issue is returns and I haven't tried to do that

Same. Although amazed it's taken this long really.

This is so funny! Had the same thoughts as PPs about Friends. I wonder if they will also release I Don't Need A Job, I Don't Need My Parents, I've Got Great Boots Boots 😆

Jins · 14/10/2024 09:20

Black ponte trousers used to be my work ‘uniform’. They nearly all came from Matalan as I preferred my workwear to cost as little as possible. I haven’t looked for a while but I bet the store is full of them

This depends very much on the quality of the fabric. I sew and ponte is one of my favourite fabrics. It washes well, keeps its shape, is bloody comfortable and is colour fast.

BlossomToLeaves · 14/10/2024 10:26

Thanks all.
I am the opposite of most of you and didn't realise it was a thing in Friends!! Even though I used to watch it sometimes.

I have just seen them advertised a lot, probably from algorithms as I've been trying to find something.

It sounds like they are too unstructured/drapey, from what you say. I need something that is much more trouser-like and a bit formal, but I don't want the pleats or creases or anything really smart, either. But it needs to be structured enough to slightly hold me in! As well as a bit stretchy to accommodate me. So not jersey or jogger style. I have yoga pants but they are much too drapey, though comfortable at home I guess. The apartment pants - specifically Saint and Sofia! - sounded like they could be a bit more suitable, but now I'm not sure.

I have a mixed day, which can start early and go late, with lots of down time at home in between - it can involve some work at home (seeing people here), some housework, or meetings at a school or somewhere, maybe a long walk or cycle into town or in the park for exercise, maybe go to the supermarket or out for coffee, maybe some meetings elsewhere like a college or at someone's home, maybe some cooking back at home, maybe casual evening activities for myself with little time to change. Obviously I can and do change clothes for things where it's really necessary, but I'd like to have something that does as much of the day as possible. I currently have Fat Face jeggings, which are OK but don't feel smart enough for some of the things, so I do change; my formal trousers feel way too smart for most of the rest of the stuff, especially random housework and long walks, so I don't want to wear them all day. But something just a little smarter would mean I could still do all the home stuff, comfortable working here, do the housework, go for my walks etc, but then still look decent for something a little smarter (I don't have to be very formal, no suits or anything!! - I normally wear White Stuff style tunics and tops, that kind of thing - though I would like one day to upgrade from that if I lose a bit of weight and don't have to have quite as baggy tops, as I do feel a little like either a toddler or a granny, depending on pattern!). It's the pockets and seam style on the jeggings that let me down I think. But the structured shape and the slight stretch are fine. Maybe straighter legs would be good. But not jersey or anything too soft and drapey.

I thought the Hobbs ones looked good in terms of being actual trouser shaped (waistband, pockets etc), and no pleats or creases, but just too wide for short, fat, fifty-year old me. I hadn't considered the fabric in much detail so didn't know about the pilling etc. - I do wear cross body bags and am walking around a lot (I tend to wear black fit flop rally style trainers, or Fit flop ankle boots). I had considered ordering them in a smaller size to fit slightly more tightly, and then getting them taken up if needed and perhaps taken in on the legs to make them straighter rather than wide-legged. But by the time I've done all that (and it would be annoying if they then pilled!) I might as well have got something else instead - except it's hard to find something else.

Maybe I'll have a look at M&S, as I have a longish break this afternoon and could walk into town where there is one - not lots of stock, but if I could see the fabric, I could order, as there's a collection point not far from me.
I don't know if there's a Matalan somewhere near (not in town, but I think a nearby town might have one) so that sounds promising.

I have the M&S straight leg stretch ones mentioned upthread; they're really comfortable and look smarter than joggers, but they don't have pockets. Good for WFH days but for the office I prefer more tailored trousers as the lack of waistband/fly is more casual than office. If you're wearing something that covers the waistband though it wouldn't be noticeable.

Pegsmum · 14/10/2024 12:25

@BlossomToLeaves I have the Apartment Pants from Saint & Sofia-they are a bit overpriced really for what they are, however I’d say they would definitely fit what you are looking for. I’ve had them two years now and are now a bit bobbly but still very wearable. Mine are very straight and not a bit drapey, I’ve just looked at them again on the website and mine are definitely straighter than shown in the pictures. They sit well with ankle boots and don’t pool around my ankles as they appear to on the pics.

Hedjwitch · 14/10/2024 12:27

Uniqlo have them. Just bought 2 pairs. Heavy weight so hang well, deep pockets and gorgeous soft material.

Uniqlo trousers are great, pockets, elasticated backs so very comfortable but look smart and they do different weights for summer and winter

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 14/10/2024 12:39

Baukjen have a few options. Worth a look.

BlossomToLeaves · 14/10/2024 12:47

Thanks all, I've have a look. I think our nearest John Lewis might carry Baukjen. Maybe the S&S ones are worth trying as I can send them back, though the customer service thing sounds a bit of a hassle. They are on sale at the moment though.

I wish we had a uniqlo nearby! I might try online ordering from there first, as they tend to be much more affordable. I'm not sure how well they cater for size 16s but might be worth a try anyway.

My Saint and Sofia trousers washed very badly and ended up looking like joggers.

Hedjwitch · 14/10/2024 12:59

@BlossomToLeaves i tried the Uniqlo ones in extra large but actually the large is fine for a size 16! Usually their stuff is too small so i was very pleased
