What do I need to get a nicer face?

Recently turned 38 but i feel like i’ve aged a decade in the past three years. Started getting very down about my looks. I’ve always been plain but feel as though other things are happening now such as sparse eyebrows, thinning hair at the temples, having to die my roots every two weeks (not ready to go grey!).

I’m not stressing too much about hair just now as i’m still trying to grow it beyond shoulder length since getting lots of breakage three years ago trying to lighten it with a hairdresser.

My main focus for now is my mouth. I have exceptionally small features and my mouth embarrasses me. Very thin lips and the top one disappears when I smile. It turns up into the gum. I’ve been reading that a lip flip with botox might be better suited for this problem rather than fillers? does anyone have any experience of the flip procedure?

Whats upsetting me most is the weird flaps i’ve acquired at the sides of my mouth. The left one of far more prominent than the right. I feel as though my face is slack around the lower cheek area by the mouth and was wondering if fillers would get rid of these or at least make the lines less obvious?

Im a total beauty novice. I wear very basic makeup. Pretty much allergic to everything (my face blew up for about two weeks last year when i tried a lash lift and tint at a salon with my niece for her birthday!) so this is a big step for me.

I want to start researching what will improve the lips and lines issue. Lots of places near me with doctors which say they offer a free consultation but I doubt they’ll be impartial.

Thabks for any tips/advice. Please ignore the shiny skin - just put on some moisturiser!

I’m actually tearing up here. I genuinely wasn’t expecting such kindness. I think i must look very different in real life as my thin lips have been commented on (as politely as possible) by some close friends and a colleague. My niece said at a recent family event i have a gummy smile and should try posing for photos with a closed mouth smile. Teeth are six years of braces as a teen! I am very fortunate however i’ve lost a molar on my right due to not getting a filling in time during covid lockdown so not great.

I am going to try some non invasive things and sit on it for a few more months before considering consulting with one of the clinics near me. I’ve been taken collagen powder in my coffee for the past six months with no effect and have tried the revitalift retinol stuff (ouch - cannot tolerate it) and i’m conscious that i might just be throwing my money at snake oil. The face yoga is something i’ve not heard of so will definitely explore that too thank you.

I used to be so content and confident with being natural and bare and basic. But i feel as though that is now becoming very hard to remain confident with when signs of ageing creep up on you all of a sudden.

I’ve been single for a few year too and considering OLD in the New Year but don’t have the confidence to get judged and rejected from a photo. Especially when you see how glamorous some women are.

Sorry im rambling. Just feeling really low this evening. Came out of the shower earlier and just stared at my face in the mirror and made a mental checklist of things i want to ‘fix’ before considering entering the dating scene. Such an awful state of mind but i need to try something to feel more attractive. And the things bothering me aren’t things that can be disguised with makeup.

Maybe your niece needs to take some of her own advice and to just keep a closed mouth in general !! What a nasty thing to say to you!!!
You look as if you have delicate features and that’s not a bad thing ! Your face is probably balanced perfectly and if you start changing things then something else might look wrong even if it’s not if that makes sense ? You have a lovely complexion and beautiful straight white teeth , please don’t think there’s anything wrong with you there really isn’t !

BurntBroccoli · 08/10/2024 21:38

Honestly you look lovely - don't get fillers or Botox - it just makes people look "off" somehow and actually older than their years.

You look a bit like a young Yasmin le Bon!

NY152 · 08/10/2024 21:41

Do what makes you happy but honestly you look great, I’m a couple of years younger than you and I would love to have your teeth and smile!

DoYouReally · 08/10/2024 21:41

You don't need to work on your face - there's nothing wrong with it snd you gabw a great smile.

You need to work on your confidence and self esteem instead.

I hate recommending anything when I don't think you need it but it's non invasive and less drastic than any else so maybe try Soap & Glory Sex Mother Pucker lip gloss - it makes your lip feel and look fuller.

Mynaddmawr · 08/10/2024 21:42

You have absolutely beautiful teeth and your lips don't look thin at all. Really lovely smile! You don't need to do anything at all to your face OP 😊

ChocAuVin · 08/10/2024 21:43

You look beautiful OP!

I use prescription tretinoin, azaleic acid and niacinamide from Skin + Me and swear by it. You have a lovely smile😊

Trebolle · 08/10/2024 21:52

I have Botox and lip fillers but you don't need them. Lip flips don't really work either.

Your mouth smile and lips are honestly beautiful.

TheProvincialLady · 08/10/2024 21:52

In 50 years none of my friends has said anything unkind about my appearance, and it’s not because I’m exceptionally beautiful and flawless. I think your friends and your niece were really out of order and next time someone makes an unpleasant, rude comment you should tell them to stop. You are an attractive woman and don’t need to make any changes to your perfectly lovely mouth.

tealandteal · 08/10/2024 21:52

You have a lovely smile OP! Beautiful and natural.

I also have very sensitive skin (since having DS2, could slap any old thing in before). I have changed to Nip and Fab glycolic acid range to add moisture in to the skin and calm it down, then added a ceramic serum to help restore the skin. I have added a very gentle retinol in 2x week and my skin has never looked better. This really helps with confidence.

Cornflakes44 · 08/10/2024 21:53

Could you go and get your make up done professionally and get them to recommend some new bits/ techniques. Maybe get a couple of stand out outfits/ jewellery pieces. I agree you look lovely and maybe you just need a bit of confidence boost. I would also recommend forgetting about what you look like and doing something to get the adrenaline going, sea swimming is great for that. Maybe a challenging run or dance class. Something to remind you that our bodies are amazing to do things with, not just to look at.

MindfulAndDemure · 08/10/2024 21:57

You have received some lovely comments on this thread, and I do agree that you have a very nice smile.

However, you asked for advice regarding what might help with areas that you are unhappy with, so I'm going to respond.

I'd suggest 0.5ml of a soft lip filler if you think a slightly fuller / softened look would make you feel more confident.

I would do the lip filler and then see how you feel about the nasolabial folds, as the lip filler will balance out your features, and make the nasolabial folds look less obvious (to you - they really aren't bad at all!).

The most important thing is to find a very good and experienced practitioner.

Yes, same. Or, OP, might it be that you interpret things as criticisms because you are self conscious? I remember ages ago, in a discussion about face shapes (maybe we were discussing choosing hairstyles or glasses or something), I mentioned one of the other girls having a round face. She got quite upset and offended. I had never imagined there was anything negative about it - to me it was just one option in the standard girls' mag list of face shapes (oval, round, square, heart...). And it was a round face!

But your niece was definitely massively out of order to ask you not to smile in a family photo! I have no words for that! Even if you had the most awful mouth and teeth in the world it would be unacceptable to say that!

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 08/10/2024 21:59

Fab smile! Wouldn’t mess with it tbh, and your skin looks great. Be kind to yourself xxx

Coconutter24 · 08/10/2024 22:01

You have a beautiful smile (and amazing teeth!!). I honestly wish people could see what others see sometimes. I bet more people will say you have a lovely smile over saying you need botox.

Summerhillsquare · 08/10/2024 22:05

Drttc · 08/10/2024 20:15

I agree - I was shocked to see your beautiful photos at the bottom of your post!!

I’m the same age as you and in general recommend anyone use a good vit c serum in AM and a retinoid (if not pregnant or nursing) in pm to start you off in anti-aging skincare.

I wasn't. So many posts like this.

Either scrutiny of women's bodies has hit so bad that conventionally attractive women are suffering dysmorphia, or the population is getting ever more narcissistic.

I agree. Honestly you'll look back in 10 years time and wonder what the hell you were worried about. You really do have a nice smile, lips and teeth.

Sadly your niece has probably been so overexposed to photos of overfilled duck lips they've started to look normal to her.

Megjobethamy · 08/10/2024 22:09

I don't know if this has been mentioned, (I skipped through some messages.. but I did see your photos. ) I got Phi Brows, semi permanent tatoos on my eyebrows and I think they make a big difference. They frame your face and look v natural but defined..

notnorman · 08/10/2024 22:13

Your teeth are gorgeous and you have a lovely smile. I can't show my teeth at all when I smile my mouth is genuinely lob sided and teeth are awful

steelingmyself · 08/10/2024 22:13

Another "your lips and teeth are lovely" post!

PrimalLass · 08/10/2024 22:35

Your lips are lovely - stop worrying.

ADHDHDHDHD · 09/10/2024 04:05

Makeup and skincare can do a lot. Glowy skin and flattering makeup will make you feel different. Go to a makeup counter that you like the makeup of the sales people and ask for a makeover.

Your niece was rude and wrong.

Appleblum · 09/10/2024 04:17

I think your smile is lovely and teeth are so straight and white! Sorry not the answer you were looking for.

TerrorAustralis · 09/10/2024 04:25

I have to agree with all the comments. You don't have thin lips and you have a lovely face and smile.

As someone who is also sensitive to just about everything going (and had a bad reaction to lash tinting) I would advise against injecting anything into your face. It's one thing to use a product topically that causes a reaction, but if you have a bad reaction to filler, you can't get it out.

Josette77 · 09/10/2024 04:36

Nope. Don't do it. You look gorgeous.

Everyone looks the same now when they get Botox and filler. It's so boring. You are gorgeous and unique. Your smile is perfect. 💖
