Stylish Christmas Sweater to last for years

Doggymummar · 06/10/2024 14:03

I have the usual plastic tat Christmas sweaters, bought precovid for the dreaded office Christmas jumper day. But I've worked from home now for half a decade and deserve something beautiful that will suit, flatter and look festive on Zoom and out and about. I can just see tat in all the shops.

I will be online shopping. I saw one on woolovers which is grey and subtle but it's a cardigan, and I'm a 34hh chest and cardigans are not my friend, it needs to be v neck and preferably green and orange to match the rest of my Autumn/Winter wardrobe. I have time so ordering from overseas is an option. Preferably under £150

Speaking as a knitter, OP, you are going to struggle to find a traditional Nordic or Shetland fair isle jumper with stranded colour work in a v-neck. This is because of the construction of the garment; they are worked in the round with a flat round yoke and it's almost impossible to work a v-neck. The cardigans are knitted similarly and then carefully seamed and cut open through a process called 'steeking'.

I would encourage you to try a few with round necks as you may be pleasantly surprised (I do empathise as I am a JJ cup, but I don't share your love for v-necks. They make me feel like I've just been Trinny-and-Susannahed in 2002).

🤣🤣
I was thinking the same thing! I find v necks deeply unflattering unless they are plunging

Maurepas · 07/10/2024 23:09

I personally am only buying tops in fleece now as moths ate all my cashmere.

How about this? It's not a "Christmas jumper" but is a beautiful dark green so looks seasonal

Ooh that's gorgeous

I agree with this. The tiniest tweaks in knitwear seem to make a huge difference. A true high crew neck looks dreadful on me (tiny head & fine hair rather than large breasts) but just a couple of cms closer to the collar bones and it’s the most flattering style on me. Still called a crew neck. I’ve also found that even more than the neckline, what’s going on down at the bottom makes a difference to how the jumper looks. Ribbing or no ribbing, how long it is etc

I’ve never really had a Christmas jumper because I’m a bit po-faced about wearing quality stuff 😁 I inherited a couple of Christmas brooches off my granny which I’ll pin to me if festive is needed. Brooches are so unfashionable - looking at Vinted you can get some beauties for almost nothing and spend the money on beautiful multi-use cashmere

I've never had one. I think they're awful and I don't see the point. I hate the idea that anyone thinks my Fair Isle cardigans might be Christmas jumpers.

Not a knitter, but I agree with this. I have big boobs and own 3 beautiful Shetland cardigans. The knitting style means that the fit is more flattering, and they look anything but scruffy.
Like you, OP, I’d struggled with cardis before, but it turns out I just wasn’t spending enough money.

So snobby. People just enjoy wearing something christmassy during the Christmas period, shock horror 🙄

I don't like Christmas jumpers and I don't want to wear one. Doesn't stop anyone else wearing them.

Why has style and beauty gone horrible? This is normally the nicest board

Hard disagree with it being the nicest board!
I find it full of people who are snobbish about lower budgets than theirs or horrified about the profligacy of others larger ones, and frequently rude about others taste if it doesn't match theirs.
I avoid posting here because of the nastiness and only read this thread because it was in active and have looked for tasteful Christmas jumpers myself in the past, so was curious.

Yvawn · 08/10/2024 10:18

If style and beauty cant find one, then it doesnt exist. Maybe try googling 'statement Christmas necklace'. Then wear with a beautiful v neck in a festive colour.

crochetmonkey74 · 08/10/2024 10:20

I think it has been recently - I've been on for years and it used to be nicer - all budgets catered for, and lots of good recommendations

Christmas board has gone the same - lots of people hopping on to say why the OP is silly to think about stockings/ cards / crackers etc

OhTediosity · 08/10/2024 10:21

Thinking further about this and if it's going to be a real investment item to last a lifetime, I'd seriously look into finding a knitter on Etsy or similar and commissioning a piece. It will cost more than £150 but it will be entirely unique and can be made to your exact specifications.

sansou · 08/10/2024 10:48

I tend to buy in the sales and one piece of knitwear a year adds up. I own this in 2 colours.

That is lovely. How do you find the Geelong wool? Is it similar to merino?

This is what I’d do too. When I was slimmer but still had a bust I wore round necks.

I was never overly keen on fair isle but had some nice hand knits including Arran. I think it’s a case of trying them on to see if they suit you.

I agree. Gorgeous.

I’m sure you make sure to ell everyone in a 20 mile radius that you wouldn’t possibly be caught dead in a ghastly common Christmas jumper 🙄

It’s not “the nicest board”. It’s basically a closed shop clique where certain posters who invariably recommend the same £300 floral sacks on every single thread are fawned over, and anyone who suggests anything more affordable is sneered at.

Crucible · 08/10/2024 14:41

Watching with interest! I am same shape and same problem. I tried some bigger men's v necks, but I looked like a toy sack.🙄

not in my experience at all for many many years

Doggymummar · 08/10/2024 17:09

Hmm. I have concluded I am too early. There are some gorgeous ones recommended here, but not v necks and thanks to the knitters I now know why. I have found some on Etsy that will probably fit the bill, once they put up the Christmas stock. My first Christmas party is in 5 weeks so I will wear my years old Christmas dress from Joe Brown and hope that I find something in time for the next one. I will keep watching here tho incase someone finds the dream jumper.

I am no knitter, but how do they manage to do sleeveless Fair Isle knits for men - with a v neck if they're impossible to knit?

As the v-necked tank top seems to be an established shape. But for men.

Is it not that the market gets what it demands -and men used to wear those tank tops with shirt and tie, so they came in v neck?

I think getting one knitted is a good idea. OP wants a non tat but sexy, heirloom , V- neck Christmas jumper at around £150.

That's a lot to ask in one jumper.

Doggymummar · 08/10/2024 21:23

I said preferably not more than £150, I have found some Estonian ones at around £325 and an Icelandic one at £989 but still not v neck. I won't pay thousands but have the money if I see what I want.
