Wearing a cardi fully buttoned with no (obvious) top beneath…

ShadesOfPemberley · 29/09/2024 21:37

This looks like A Thing? I’m seeing it on clothing sites and newspaper features… Maybe it’s been A Thing forever but I’ve never really noticed! Sezane seem to do it a lot in a v sexy way with the Gaspard cardigan.

I generally wear a cardi just as a warm layer over a visible top, but I’m keen to embark on this (possibly-not-new) cardi-on-its-own trend…

It sounds silly but has anyone got reccs for what to wear beneath? Any pointers of where to find good v invisible cami tops…? I assume I DO wear something beneath? Rather than just the cardigan next to my skin, which might be a bit itchy and feel a bit odd/potentially exposing?

Sorry, I know I sound utterly clueless and it’s probably a look everyone is wearing without overthinking it…! 😵‍💫 I’m not aiming for the supersexy Sezane look, really, just a more interesting and less cardigan-ish way to wear a couple of my favourite round neck mid-weight cardigans. I’m trying to ‘shop my wardrobe’ I guess…

imagine that this is the kind of look I’m aiming for, stylish and interesting rather than just bunging the cardigan on over a T shirt or whatever. Sadly I’m not as young or gorgeous as the model…

I wear mine with a thermal vest under

CharlotteStreetW1 · 29/09/2024 21:46

Ooh I'm a trendsetter as I've been doing this for decades! (Me and Lady Sarah Chatto)

I just wear a bra underneath.

DelurkingAJ · 29/09/2024 21:48

One of my favourite 90s looks…a chenille cardigan and jeans. And no, nothing but a bra underneath! (I can’t do wool even with a top, too itchy, even merino).

PlumPeony · 29/09/2024 21:50

I think it's meant to be without anything underneath (maybe a bra), but I prefer to wear a low tank top or lace cami. My cardigans are always cotton though, can't wear any kind of wool.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 29/09/2024 23:57

I used to do this all the time with Brora cashmere cardigans. It doesn't really matter what you wear under as long as it doesn't show, is close fitting and doesn't add bulk.

Em and Ess cotton spaghetti strap vests are as good as anything. Or even their long sleeved thermal tops if it's cold. Buy them 2 sizes smaller than your dress size , they will stretch to fit, so that they fit close to skin and don't add bulk.

Same as I would wear under a wool jumper (long or short sleeve t-shirt) Why would it be any different?

I was wondering what this cool Em and Ess brand I'd never heard of was until I clicked the link 😂

Uniqlo thermal tops in scoop neck - thin, warm and they keep a layer between your skin and the knitwear, so you don’t need to wash it as often.

OhHeyOwlFace · 30/09/2024 07:09

I'm so confused why you'd call it Em & Ess. Once perhaps to be mildly amusing but twice? Odd

OP - just stay away from wool and gaps between buttons and wear with a bra

The buttons could come undone?

And I'd be wearing a t-shirt. I never wear wool against bare skin unless it's a light merino base layer.

This was my look back in the 90s.

Now I'm older, I would be cold without the extra layer, and would still want a vest!

What like a shirt?😂

terracottafarm · 30/09/2024 08:33

Been wearing cardigans as a 'top' for years! I just wear it with a really big granny bra underneath

mondaytosunday · 30/09/2024 08:41

Yes I used to do this in my better (ie, slimmer) days! In fact my going away outfit at my wedding was an embroidered cardigan! I just wore a bra underneath- a cami (usually same colour as the cardigan or nude colour) if the buttons left a few gaps.

ElizabethVonArnim · 30/09/2024 09:06

If you do it with cashmere cardis, surely you need something with at least a short sleeve under to protect the wool in the armpits from deodorant etc? Scoop neck thermal vests with short sleeves are perfect for this.

Browneyeshadow · 30/09/2024 09:17

I like this look but then I get cold

Frozenberries · 30/09/2024 09:19

I wear a low vest top/tank top because otherwise I’m too cold

Alicana · 30/09/2024 09:22

Just wear what you would wear with a jumper. I don’t think this is a particularly new trend, it’s a staple look of my mother!

BangingOn · 30/09/2024 09:24

I do this a lot and I swear by Me&Em fashion first aid camisoles for being entirely invisible underneath. There are probably cheaper options out there but mine have lasted years so the cost per wear is very good.

ArrowOfAthena · 30/09/2024 09:25

Isn't it just a jumper with buttons?

AutumnTimeForCosy24 · 30/09/2024 09:29

@ShadesOfPemberley

yeah you've missed 'a look' that's been around forever 😂

personally I wear a bra & vest look, but that's because I'm sole of nork & of tummy these days & don't want to subject others to glimpses of my stomach!!

if you have smooth skin/well toned tummy then just a bra is fine - If you can wear it next to your kin with no issues! (I could) if you feel the cold (inside) then a thermal top?
