Wearing a cardi fully buttoned with no (obvious) top beneath…

This looks like A Thing? I’m seeing it on clothing sites and newspaper features… Maybe it’s been A Thing forever but I’ve never really noticed! Sezane seem to do it a lot in a v sexy way with the Gaspard cardigan.

I generally wear a cardi just as a warm layer over a visible top, but I’m keen to embark on this (possibly-not-new) cardi-on-its-own trend…

It sounds silly but has anyone got reccs for what to wear beneath? Any pointers of where to find good v invisible cami tops…? I assume I DO wear something beneath? Rather than just the cardigan next to my skin, which might be a bit itchy and feel a bit odd/potentially exposing?

Sorry, I know I sound utterly clueless and it’s probably a look everyone is wearing without overthinking it…! 😵‍💫 I’m not aiming for the supersexy Sezane look, really, just a more interesting and less cardigan-ish way to wear a couple of my favourite round neck mid-weight cardigans. I’m trying to ‘shop my wardrobe’ I guess…

The problem I have is sometimes I'm somewhere overheated but cant strip off as I have nothing underneath/just a thermal vest underneath so I have to sweat it out. Very unpleasant.

Ineedanewsofa · 30/09/2024 09:34

Strappy cami vest things, slightly elasticated to ‘hold me in’. Bought from a variety of places down the years (I also wear them under sheer blouses) but the best ones I have are from Primark! A bra too, of course.
I never do this with wool however, too itchy!

EternallyDelighted · 30/09/2024 09:35

I wear black or white vests as I am prone to overheating and might need to undo the cardi. I never wear wool as it makes me itch, mine are all cotton or mixes so I don't need deodorant protection, If I wore long sleeves under one I'd definitely overheat.

BadSkiingMum · 30/09/2024 09:36

I quite like the idea of a twinset in a lightweight knit, but they don’t seem to be around much these days - Lady Sarah Chatto must be getting them from somewhere!

I used to do the ‘bra-only beneath knitwear’ thing when I was a young, skinny teacher but then regrettably boiled on a school trip to the Royal Festival Hall, wearing a short-sleeved burgundy mohair jumper that had seemed fine for an autumn day…you definitely have to get the weather forecast right for this look!

usernother · 30/09/2024 09:37

I just wear my bra underneath.

OhHeyOwlFace · 30/09/2024 09:56

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle thank you for explaining, that's good to know

CharlotteBog · 30/09/2024 09:57

I do this a lot. As long as the fabric isn't itchy I just wear a bra underneath.
A cardi is a jumper with buttons!

ShadesOfPemberley · 30/09/2024 10:10

Thanks everyone!

AutumnTime oh god yes for sure I’ve missed this… it sounds like it’s not even really A Look except in my own head!! 😂

Deo marks on wool/cashmere was definitely a thing I was thinking about, plus the issue of feeling chilly… I reckon the suggestion of a scoop neck fitted thermal vest will do the trick, ElizabethvonArmin thank you!!

Honestiy it’s a miracle I can actually get dressed in the mornings at all… 🤔

Oh and from now on I will def think of a cardigan as a Jumper With Buttons, thereby revolutionising my wardrobe 🎉

Wouldn't work for me - I get bad hot flushes so I can only wear something with long sleeves if I can take it off when necessary.
I'd be parading around in my bra within an hour or two 🤣

ChangeTheProphecy · 30/09/2024 10:35

I second a PP, the Uniqlo heat tech scoop neck tops are great for this. Really thin but provide a barrier against itchy material and an extra layer of warmth

henlake7 · 30/09/2024 10:42

I would def need a top underneath. If Im wearing one of those button up cardies it usually starts done up and varies between, done up, undone and off throughout the day depending how hot I am.

The one I dont get is sweater vests and waistcoats with nothing underneath....seems like a very popular look and yet to me it just looks like you cant dress yourself properly!

Chocolatebuttonsandprosseco · 30/09/2024 08:27

What like a shirt?😂

Yes, like a shirt.
I'd wear something under that too.

Ginmonkeyagain · 30/09/2024 11:15

I do this all the time - late autumn/early spring I wear a vest under a cotton/ cotton mix cardie. Cold winter days I weer a uniqlo longsleeved heat tech top under wool or cashmere. It looks very neat with jeans or a smart skirt.

As people have said you do need to get the weathet right so you don't get stuck in a top you can't take off in polite company - err on tje sod eof a thicker under top and thinner cardie if in doubt.

The over heating issue is why I never wear jumper dresses.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 30/09/2024 12:26

Done this forever, including turning the cardigan around, so the buttons are down the back (works with some, not all). Nothing new under the sun in fashion, the influencers just think there is!!

Londontown12 · 30/09/2024 16:15

In do this I wear a bralette underneath and sometimes leave the bottom buttons undone x

Whatwouldnanado · 30/09/2024 16:40

Cotton T shirt, long or short sleeves to layer on and off as necessary during the year. (Usually worn with black or navy trousers and skirts). Then cardies don’t need to be washed so often. This has been standard for years, cotton or merino. Scarves will be coming out soon too, our office is blooming freezing.
