Stylish travelling overnight flight

Transam · 23/09/2024 17:05

I’m about to travel long haul business for a holiday (for the first time).
I’m ridiculously excited about the lounge and the lie-flat bed!
I know loads of you will do this all the time and just rock up in your everyday stuff but I thought I’d treat myself to a comfortable stylish outfit I feel great it.
I read somewhere that cashmere hoodies are (or were?) a thing. I have a pair of smart black joggers but not sure about them.
I’m a size 10 and 1.60m if that matters.

Please share any insight you might have. I’ve just enough time to order online as we fly next week. Thanks!

No one will be paying attention 🙈 we travel to US regularly. Just wear something comfortable, not scruffy and you'll be absolutely fine. Especially if you're on an overnight flight. After food service lights off, no one will see what you are wearing
Safe flight and enjoy the experience ! X

As per previous poster, none of your fellow travellers will notice and whilst business class is infinately (infinately) better than economy long-haul, there is no expectation for you to dress up. Obviously its a holiday and you are excited to buy something that you feel nice in but that is comfortable. Personally, I pack something to change into for 'bed time'. Obviously you won't need to do that if you're just hopping over to the east coast of the US or to Dubai. Where are you off to and who are you flying with?

watchingsmurfs · 23/09/2024 17:30

As lovely as BC is, you still have to share a loo and there will be pee on the floor. This is my main consideration when outfit planning, e.g, no long, wide leg trousers.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 23/09/2024 17:37

Something comfy and not tight round the waist. Joggers are fine. No-one will be the slightest bit bothered what you're wearing really.

Take ear plugs. I never slept a wink when I went BA business class, the noise of the engine and the vibrations etc when I lay down were just far too distracting. Also don't have too much booze in the business class lounge as you'll end up dehydrated. And because there is very little service on a night flight once the meal has been served there's not much chance to ask for water. I mean you COULD, but you feel awkward doing it when all the lights are low and everyone is supposed to be settled and asleep.

fairlygoodmother · 23/09/2024 17:38

Agree with others that you absolutely don’t need to buy anything special. But if you want to, why not, and I don’t necessarily think no one will notice if you’re wearing something lovely.

Try googling for travel sets for inspiration.

Those are EXACTLY what I choose to wear when flying. 😆Nice elasticated waist, no belt digging in. As long as they're not trailing on the ground there's no problem. Never been on a plane toilet that had pee on the ground anyway.

Transam · 23/09/2024 17:43

Hahah, you’ve all slightly burst my bubble! But appreciate the advice re wide legs and pee, thanks. We’re flying to Vancouver so 9 hours +

I’ll do some Googling but there’s not much call for stylish travel sets where I live and I just live in jeans with a reasonable top for teams calls so any more ideas or links much appreciated…

I take cashmere bed socks (and some slip on shoes for going to the loo). Your joggers sound perfect, and yes, a nice snuggly hoodie or something would be great.

I really like Lululemon leggings as they super soft and not see through + hoodie of some kind. Shoes easy to put on and off - do not go to toilet barefoot 🤢 I wouldn't travel in flip flops or crocs either.

Sandwichgen · 23/09/2024 17:49

Cashmere hoodie and matching cashmere trackie bottoms?

mitogoshigg · 23/09/2024 17:56

I would add that cabin temperatures vary from chilly to very warm, definitely layer. I usually get cold feet though so carry sick if I'm wearing sandals.

I find jersey dresses work the best

mitogoshigg · 23/09/2024 17:58

Not sure which plane is on the Vancouver route now, i haven't been since pre Covid when it was an old 747 and cold!

Vancouver is a fairly casual city fyi

MrsParmaViolet · 23/09/2024 18:01

I flew from LAX recently and wore a black Skims tracksuit.

undercover5 · 23/09/2024 18:04

I go back and forth to the US a lot, either business or first. I usually wear jeans or lululemon leggings (as suggested by a PP), a white shirt or t-shirt and trainers, and bring a cashmere hoodie or cardigan. In my experience, the transatlantic flights start out cold and end up hot by the end. They give you socks in your toiletries bag, so I usually just take off my trainers and pull those over my socks, I never bother with their slippers or sleep suits. My best tip is get your eyelashes tinted so you don't end up with smudged mascara from sleeping on the flight.

Hope you have a great time!

mushpush · 23/09/2024 18:06

Ooo exciting!! Black joggers and a nice cotton short sleeve top tucked in, then a cashmere or similar cardigan (so you're prepared for all temperatures!) would look great - you can do the classic cardigan on shoulders when you're not wearing it which always looks good too.

I tend to wear things like a matching athletic set with a fancy cardigan, leggings and linen shirts, that sort of thing. It looks put together but is also comfortable which is the big thing!

If it's overnight I always take some fancy socks (they do provide them and pjs normally but I'm a giant so take my own!) because there's nothing better than nice fancy socks.

Shoe wise, I tend to go for something I can slip on and off easily, especially for quick bathroom trips and security. I also always take skincare to do on a flight, face masks and moisturiser are a must! Also not sure if you're into hair, but I do sock twists to do a blowout style when I'm sleeping, then when you wake up and go to deplane you've got great looking hair (which always makes me feel better). I wear noise cancelling headphones too which makes it so easy to sleep, waking up refreshed is a game changer.

I treat the flight as part of the holiday and make it as enjoyable as possible 😊

Bs0u416d · 23/09/2024 18:10

Great. Do report back as we're probably going to end up on Air Canada to Hawaii via Vancouver (bizarrely) in May. Remember that you can use any of the star alliance lounges and the United Lounge is my favorite.

WildFlowerBees · 23/09/2024 18:17

I like wide leg yoga pants and a cashmere jumper with layers underneath. A cashmere travel wrap which I also wear all the time as a big scarf in winter. Nice cosy socks.

Take at least 2l of water on board with you. I'm also that person who pre cleanses then slaps on a sheet mask followed by lots of hydration. Eye mask, lip balm and ear plugs. Noise cancelling headphones because there is always one poor parent whose child cries most of the flight.

A couple of glasses of bubbles and relax. If you're flying BA don't expect decent films, I flew back to LHR 2 days ago and the choice was rubbish!

Bellaboot · 23/09/2024 18:21

Sweaty Betty Gary's are my go-to, pockets are handy. Also slides for going to the loo.

Agreed I generally wear the thicker lululemon leggings in 3/4 length
and something like cotton v neck t shirt or vest top and either a cosy fluffy cotton hoodie or a cashmere hoodie.

i wear trainers and bring extra warm flight socks

Good advice!

dudsville · 23/09/2024 18:33

Toast have some elasticated waist cords. I always thought they would be a special treat for a flight, especially the barrel legged ones. They also have a cashmere jumper at the moment that would be equally cosy and fabulous. All very heavy on the pocket book, but if you wanted to indulge it would be money well spent! I'm envious, I always travel cattle class.

Mydogisaknob · 23/09/2024 18:37

I wouldn't wear anything I can't wash at a high temperature later (airport and airplane germs! Grim!)

Leggings, layers.

SunGreen · 23/09/2024 18:40

The pee on the floor is a real thing so definitely avoid wide legged trousers. I recently flew BA and then AA transatlantic business class and I had forgotten this issue and had to hoik my trousers up. Yuk.
You’ll Get socks, earplugs, eye mask a pillow and blanket so just wear comfy layers.
if it were me I would spend the money on something really nice to change into when you land - anything you wear on the flight will be crumpled and you may drop crumbs etc on it when you’re tucking into your 4 course meal. Make sure to pack a moisturiser as you will find your skin dry and they never give you enough in the complimentary toiletries. Hands and face suffer! Request Lots of water as a PP said. Enjoy! Use the arrivals lounge to shower and change into your new clothes and you’ll feel great.

thehungryteacher · 23/09/2024 20:42

Oooh enjoy op! I want to SF on my one and only business class flight.

Most people were were Wearing "normal Clothes" so comfortable
And no one dressed in an overly dressed up way.

Because I spend my money on air miles rather than clothes I wore

Thin harem trousers (F & F)
T shirt / vest warehouse
Cardigan - Primark
Trainers - Nike

It was all clean and fairly new ish.

I get hot so like thin layers

Take sliders for bathroom visits - I couldn't bear to clean my teeth in aeroplane toilets but plenty do.

I took wipes for make up and moisturise distract and a scrunchie from my hair. Going out was a day flight and in kind was a night flight. I slept so well outbound I barely remember the flight!

The food was awesome and we had beef short rib and loads of booze!
